The user manual for my R10 appears to say that several EX-type accessories are incompatible with the R10, and I should use an AD-E1 (AD-1?) adapter.
Two things come to mind. If that is so, why are there EX-type contacts on my R10? And why does my 580EX II (all of them) appear to work just fine on my R10. And curiously enough, Canon says I CAN use the EL-100 on my R10. The EL-100 only has EX style contacts. I've looked at several sites on-line. Some folks claim it works just fine. Some folk say you have to force the Speedlite in place to get contact (I do not have to force anything). Some folks claim they have tried EX/EX II Speedlites on the R10 and they do NOT work. Any wisdom here of FM?

I don’t have the R10, but do have the R50 that has the newer style flash hotshoe.
I haven’t got round to buying the adapter.. 2 reasons 1) the cost!! 2) I think it would be a major weakness using the plastic adapter to bridge between R50 and heavy 580EXii (I have a plethora of EX guns and a pair of EL 100’s)
I will try my EX guns on my R50 later when I get home from work.

I'm not sure about other EX units, but on the 580EX II, the weather seal is part of the flash. The camera you mount it on does not seem to matter. I get the same responses on the Canon's own forums. It works, it doesn't work unless using AD-E1, AD-E1 needed only for weather sealing.
It seems Canon could be a bit more clear. I don't really care for trial and (possible) error on a new piece of equipment. I mounted my first 580EX II on the camera to use as a master to control a 3-light setup before I read the manual. Everything worked find. Had I known that 'I couldn't do that', I may have been more hesitant. I saw contacts, I assumed it would work. Not sure why Canon is saying that it doesn't. Well, in one spot, and exactly the opposite in another spot.

For what it's worth, I noticed the same confusing language in the user manual when I had my R10. My 580 EX II and 430 EX II flashes worked fine. I think it's just a poor translation from the original language, probably.
It is also my understanding that the main reason for the adapter is to preserve weather sealing with some speedlights. I don't own any of the newer models or the adapter itself, so haven't tried to suss it out further.

Ahh! I forgot that tidbit. Now it makes even less sense that Canon says I need to use the AD-E1 to mount an EX flash. A minor matter, for sure. I'm sure if I thoroughly examined the manual, I'd find more than one other foible.
Just to add my 2 cents. My 600ex RT flashes, my 430 EX III RT and even my Yongnuo YN-E3-RT trigger, work with my R7, R6 MKIII and my R5 flawlessly! and without any adapter!
