There's a Middle School just across the river from us and every year about this time they get a bunch of canoes and kayaks and take the kids out to teach them the basics. Unfortunately, it's cold and blustery here today, but they're going out anyway.

I like the image's silver tones, and a great idea.
Our grandchildren lived 13 years in the NL where a national law required every child take swimming instruction and pass a national certification test to use public swim facilities. Wouldn't scale up well to the US but still a great idea.

Thanks, Bob. I agree that it would be a great idea to do that here.

Thanks, Douglas. You are absolutely right about how cold affects the young. We went to our weekly outdoor Farmers Market this morning when the temp was 40°F and saw college age kids walking around wearing short sleeve shirts. A few even wore shorts.

Yeah, the cold doesn't affect the kids so much...at least in my memory, it didn't. Good find and composition, Brent!

Nice shot and great idea for the school. Is it a public school? Here in WA it would be hard to get a program like that past the liability lawyers.
Thanks, Jim. Yes, it is a public school. Madison is an isthmus city with large lakes on each side and a river connecting them. I suppose the thinking here is that with kids having so much water in the immediate vicinity, it's good to familiarize them with water safety. Interestingly, the same school has a very popular unicycle program and it's quite common for us to see middle school kids riding their unicycles along the sidewalk going to and from school.
