p.1 #1 · Japan Trip Camera/Lens Suggestions?

Planning a trip to Tokyo in a few months, and I'm not sure what gear to take. I'll be traveling with my adult kid who "tolerates" photography, unlike myself who absolutely loves photography. My kid agreed to bring along one of my cameras, providing it wasn't too heavy. I have a couple of options I'm considering

My current equipment (these are the cameras and lenses I currently own, and I have no desire/interest in either purchasing or renting anything that is NOT on my list):

Cameras:

- Canon R6II
- Canon 7dmk2
- Sony A7c
- Sony A7iv
- OM System OM-5

Lenses for my Canon cameras:

- RF 16mm f2.8 STM
- RF 24mm f1.8 Macro
- RF 28mm f2.8 STM
- RF 35mm f1.8 Macro
- RF 50mm f1.8 STM
- RF 16-28mm f2.8 STM
- RF 24-240mm f4-6.3
- Three Canon EF to RF Adapters
- EF 28mm f1.8 USM
- EF 50mm f1.8 STM
- EF 85mm f1.8 USM
- EF 100mm f2.8L
- EF 300mm f4.0L
- EF 17-40mm f4.0L
- EF 70-200mm f2.8L
- EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 USM
- EF-S 10-18mm f4.5/5.6 STM

Lenses for my Sony cameras:

- Tamron 20-40mm f2.8
- Tamron 17-28mm f2.8
- Tamron 28-200mm f2.8-5.6

Lenses for my OM-5:

- Pan/Leica 9mm f1.7
- Panasonic 17mm f2.5
- Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 G2
- OM System 45-150mm f4 Pro
- Olympus 30mm f3.5 Macro
- Olympus 60mm f2.8 Macro

Here are the choices I've been considering. Please feel free to modify or suggest alternatives:

A) A7iv for me, A7c for the kid. Both cameras share the same batteries/chargers, so less things we need to pack. Only have 3 lenses, so I'd take all 3. Kid gets the A7c with Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 attatched but can borrow my other two lenses if needed.

B) R6II for me, OM-5 for kid. Not sure what lenses I take because I'm really not a fan of the distorted results I get with my RF zooms. Kid would get the OM-5 with Pan/Leica 9mm f1.7, Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8, and 45-150mm f4 Pro. Not sure if kid would love carrying all that gear though.

C) R6II for me, 7dmk2 for kid. I'd probably just bring my EF lenses as they perform better than my RF lenses (and yes, my EF 17-40mm f4.0L is one of those rare, sharp copies). Both cameras use the same batteries/charger, lenses easily swapped if I'm using the EF/RF adapter on my R6II. Downside is that my kid would hate the 7dmk2 because it's so heavy.

D) Insert your alternative recommendation here.

Or the Sony bodies and only two lenses - 20-40 and 28-200?

Back up can be your phone, for travel they work well.

I just was in Japan for a few weeks during cherry blossom Sakura season. I spent a week in Tokyo and also visited Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima.
My advice is to bring the smallest and lightest gear you have. Walking 10,000, 15,000 or more steps a day can make anything feel heavier after several hours.
Stay near a central train station like the Yaminote line. Some of the stations are little cities themselves and if you get out at the wrong exit it can take 15-30 minutes extra. If you have an iPhone get a the suica app and refill as needed from Apple pay. You can also use the suica at konbini and vending machine and some stores.
When you travel from city to city use luggage transfer service to take your luggage it only cost $20-less than $30 and makes train travel so much easier.
Check out some of the wonderful camera shops in Japan. I had so much fun seeing all the old cameras and lenses. Don’t over plan, leave some time for serendipity.

To add to my previous reply I would either bring the Sony A7 or OM5 and 2-4 lenses but choose one or two per outing. I brought my A7C II but ended up using my tiny Ricoh GRIII and a Leica M4 that I purchased there the most.

What month are you traveling to Japan?

Problem is that I always like to shoot wider than 20mm, so the 17-28 is a must-have for me.

Thanks! Looking at August hopefully. I'm used to insanely hot weather with high humidity and frequent downpours (live in southern Florida), so weather isn't going to be much of a deterrent for me (unless there's a typhoon, of course).

It's hard to imagine the crowds during intense summer heat and humidity. If I were to go again it would probably be late October to early November for fall foliage.

Unfortunately I can't take my kid at any other time due to school scheduling.

If used to Florida weather, summer Japan won't be an issue for you. "Summer" "out of school" travel is what it is everywhere these days.

I went to Japan a little over a decade ago with just a Fuji 18-55/2.8-4 and 35/1.4, which are like 27-83mm and 52mm equivalents, and I found them perfect for Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. It's a bummer you don't have something like a 24-105... your 28-200 is kind of an obvious choice for a simple travel kit when a lot of walking is involved. Also, I don't think you need UWA lenses for the city... there's often a lot of wires and clutter around that makes it harder to get clean compositions when you go wide. I'm sure there would be some interesting opportunities for UWA but not enough for me personally to warrant bringing one when I'm trying to keep things really light.

Thank you!! I honestly have no idea what to expect, so I truly appreciate your tips on UWA not being that necessary. I'm really not a big fan of my Canon RF 16-28mm f2.8, so I'm glad I won't miss it if I leave it home this time around.

Around 3 years ago I purchased a Canon RF 24-105mm f4.0L. I really tried to like that lens, but unfortunately it didn't work for me. Maybe I got a bad copy. AF was bad, and I couldn't get sharp images from it at any focal length or aperture on the R6 I had back then. I ended up returning it. It would've been the perfect focal length for me paired with my tiny RF 16mm f2.8 STM. I've been debating whether or not to buy another RF 24-105mm f4.0L, but I'm a bit concerned getting stuck with another bad copy.

Did you find you needed anything wider than a 28mm at any time while you were there? I've never been there, so no clue what to expect. Other places I've traveled I used 16mm and 24mm extensively (especially inside old Gothic cathedrals). Again, Japan is different, so no idea if what I'm used to will work there or not.

21mm is my favorite focal length and it is noticeably missing in my future kit. Last summer I spent a bit over three weeks in Japan. My overseas photographic travel rules are digital only and only gear that will fit in my sling bag, which fits under the seat in front of me. For camera gear, I sold off 80% of what I had and concentrated on what I wanted for travel, so all fast cameras and long lenses gone. My Canon gear was much like yours. Multiple professional bodies and great fast lenses and long zooms. For Japan I took an X2D/25mm/38mm & M11 Monochrom 21mm/35mm. While in Tokyo, I stopped by Map camera and they had a number of used Leica APO-Summicron-M 75mm f/2 ASPH. I traded my 21mm for a focal length that I had never used. Did I miss out on some good captures? Well, certainly I did, but I also learned how to see through the 75mm. The image below was my first 75mm taken two hours after purchase. So, yes there are lots of opportunities at 21mm, but for me with regards to future international travel, I want one camera and one lens. I’ve also included an image from Korea in 2024. This is an image at 21mm and would not render the same with a 35mm. So, I would miss this shot with my moderate zoom only kit. This isn’t such a stretch since I always left one camera at the hotel. I’ve yet to travel with this new kit (X2D2/35-100mm), so I might regret not taking the wide zoom.

In addition to my Canon gear, I sold my Sony A1, A7Riv, A7Rv and lots of GM glass including zooms and primes out to 400mm. If you don’t use all of that gear, consider selling much of it and picking up an X2D2. The resolution matches my 60Mpix M11M, which lacks a Bayer filter. The image stabilization puts to shame every camera that I’ve used. The colors are amazing right out of the camera and for travel it can’t be beat (short of safari and birding). In 2024 I traveled in Korea with an X2D/38mm, which is probably a smaller combination than much of your Canon gear. The X2D2 was a major upgrade and I can crop a lot before reducing resolution to that of your Canon bodies and it shines in scotopic conditions.

Lastly, depending on the season, Asia can be a very wet place. It rained on many days of my three week Japanese trip and I was thankful for the water sealing of the X2D, but it likely falls short of your Canons and most equipment fall short of highly weather sealed Olympus gear.

Here is my first 75mm taken in very low illumination.

Very nice images! Thanks for sharing! I really like your idea to travel with a minimal amount of gear. I made the mistake last October to travel to Spain (11 cities while I was there) and drag along an R6II, R7 as backup, RF 16-28mm f2.8 STM, RF 24-240mm f4-6.3, and Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 RDX (for the R7). After day one, I was in pain. Worse yet, the images I got from my R7 were terrible thanks to a back-focusing issue. That prompted me to sell it and used the money to buy my Sony A7iv.

I have been contemplating the idea of getting rid of both my RF 16-28mm f2.8 STM and RF 24-240mm f4-6.3, and use the money toward getting the lens I know deep down inside I really want which is the RF 24-70mm f2.8L. But I know for sure I won't get much for either of my two lenses even though they are in pristine condition and I still have their boxes. I even placed a clear, protective filter over the front elements day one when I purchased them, so these lenses are in almost new condition. But then again, I have zero love for that RF 16-28mm f2.8 STM.

The compromise option for me is to try once more with an RF 24-105mm f4.0L and hope that it won't be a deffective copy like the one I once purchased and returned. But the downside is that it is an f4.0. That is pretty slow for me especially if I'm trying to capture low light evening shots or indoor, handheld shots.

OK, my X2D2 idea didn’t resonate. While in Japan, my wife, who never used a camera, used my A7Cr with a 40mm small prime and came away with some amazing images. Her major complaint was that she sometimes needed wider. Again, this idea means parting with equipment that the new camera replaces and cameras/lenses not used. You might not get much for some of your lenses, but at least they would end up with a photographer that uses the lenses. The A7Rvi is about to be introduced mid month. Rumors strongly support 67Mpix, very fast autofocus, improved IBIS, improved dynamic range and possibly 16 bit raw files. Also, the A7Rv EVF is one of the best on the market and with a sensor with much faster refresh rate when compared to the A7Rv, the A7Rvi EVF should be even better. I purchased the Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 lens, but just a few days ago I sold the A7Cr. The 24-50mm is reasonably fast and not a large lens. 67Mpix has some of the cropping advantages of the X2D2 and the already great low light performance of the A7CR will certainly be improved upon with the new camera and much better IBIS is very likely since the A7Rvi promises better than A7Rv, which improves upon the IBIS in the A7Cr and your Sony body. You can sell your equipment here, or if lazy via MPB, or KEH. I should say the MPB has on multiple occasions given me more money than their initial quote and this was true with the A7CR. If you don’t find a body with improved high ISO performance, better IBIS and better ability to be cropped, your a burdened with large/heavy fast lenses.

The X2D2 did actually "resonate" with me, but I can't justify or afford to spend over $7,000 on a body plus (on overage) $3,000 per lens at this time. My equipment is super cheap compared to that, and I struggle with the idea of spending only $2,400 on an RF 24-70mm f2.8L! So, I'm not there yet, and even if I sell off all my equipment plus all my older film equipment, I won't be anywhere near being able to afford an X2D2 with one or two primes.

So, for the time being, I'm stuck juggling between what I currently own, or maybe do a "compromise purchase" of either an RF 24-105mm f4.0L or a Sony 24-105mm f4.0.

My 24-105/4 isn't the sharpest lens I own, but it's still pretty good on my R5. At 105mm it's not as sharp as the rest of the range, but I wouldn't say the lens seems defective in any way. And as far as f/4 goes, I think it's perfectly adequate for almost every scenario... high ISO performance is very good on the R6II (and my R5) and AI denoise is very impressive if you end up having to shoot at 6400+ to get the shutter speed you need. Pair a zoom like that with the 35/1.8 for nighttime walks and moody whiskey bars and what have you, and you're set. I think a 24-70/2.8 would be a fine one-lens choice as well, but at the cost of more bulk, weight, and financial investment.

OK...lived in Japan for several years...go back every year with the family in July.

August is an awesome time to be there. Start looking up festivals. August is all about that. Lots of fireworks. Lots of street food. Lots...and I mean LOTS of people. Generally I get the heck out of dodge right before schools let out for summer vacation (end of July). Once they do...everything is busy everywhere. Be very careful about staying during Obon. The bullet trains will all be booked well in advance and they will be standing room only for that week. Domestic flights too. There are lots of awesome things to see or do that week but if you're there at that time...for that week...my advice is pick a city and make it your home for the duration of that week. Intercity travel will be very expensive and highly uncomfortable.

Enough of that...on to camera stuff. I could not imagine doing Japan without a fast 50mm full frame equivalent. That's how it's meant to be viewed imo. So really, given what you have. R6II 50mm 1.8. I'd probably bring the 16 or 24 to go with it for indoor or for a night time festival. I've done Kyoto/Nara with a canon 5dIII and a 24-70. It did amazing but I was 39 (now 49) and now I would just use the 50 and the 24. That lens is way too heavy to lug around. For walking around I'd marry the 50mm to the camera. Once I got to a place, like a temple or a shrine...or a castle, I'd put on the wider lens. Castles are generally dark and cramped so the widest/fastest you've got. Shrines/Temples typically prefer you don't take pictures inside...so look for signs indicating where it's ok...and not ok to take pictures.

You won't need two cameras. You really won't. Take turns between you and your kid. Two camera's is total overkill unless you were doing a paid gig. If something breaks...it's Japan...there are lots of camera shops.

I'm going back from late June till the end of July this year. I'm bringing an action camera Osmo Action something or another and a Fuji X-T3 (may swap it out for the xh2s) with 35 1.4, 14 2.8 and probably the 100-400 (in-laws house is fairly rural and there's some cool wildlife as well as an army airfield with lots of cool fighter jets...if it weren't for that it would stay home). Also... If I can get tickets to sumo I'll bring the 90 f2. We're staying in Nagoya and that sumo tournament is awesome. ...may try and get to a soccer or baseball game too. If you like baseball...I can't recommend enough watching a game there. Even if you aren't a huge fan...Japanese baseball games are nuts.

That being said...best thing to do is think about what you want to do/see and if you need something beyond a wide fast prime and your 50...bring it.
