What kind of lighting did you use in the top one?

Thanks! Top is F13, bottom is F8.

Entering diffraction for sure at F13, but I wasn't sure what they wanted to do for a team photo before I got there, and didn't have time to experiment with a lower f-stop. The F13 V formation was at 33mm.

Agreed - nice work! What is your strobe setup to get it lit all the way to the back? It looks from the shadows that you have two strobes left and right both placed about halfway down each side of the V?

I’m curious about your experience with the a700 vs the a7rvi for birds. I tried the a6700 against the A7v and found that the a6700 was competitive- although the blackout free shooting with A7v was a major plus.

I wanted to clarify that the reason I sold my A1 was that my little A6700—paired with the 300mm f/2.8 and 1.4x teleconverter—was fantastic; more importantly, it offered eye detection for video.

Now, with the A7R Vl, I get the best of both worlds: in APS-C mode, I have 28 megapixels and a crop for 120p shooting, while full-frame gives me wider shots.

I’ve owned quite a few cameras over the years—starting with Canon and Nikon DSLRs. Later, I wanted to get into video, so I picked up the Canon R6, R5, and XH2S. I switched back to Nikon for the Z8

Yep you nailed it! 2 Westcott FJ400ii in 7 foot silver umbrellas with diffusion, lined up parallel and middle of each leg of the V, then some masking in light room because it's was far from perfect. The two girls at the ends were a bit underexposed. I need to keep experimenting, and probably add another set of lights, but don't really have an opportunity to practice as these photo-shoots are very limited on time and usually in the middle of their practices. Lots of compromises, but they come out pretty neat. Gotta work on posing them a little more too, to get their feet and legs lined up perfectly.

Yes, the a6700 is truly competitive for a non-stacked sensor.
With the a7R Vl, I essentially have an a6700 and an a1 II rolled into one.

The most striking difference is the a7R Vl's viewfinder—it’s simply magnificent, and it’s very hard to go back to anything else after using it. I swapped cameras with a colleague who had an R6 III during a photo walk and noticed a glaring difference between the two; I was really happy to get my a7R Vl back, especially for the viewfinder.

As for autofocus, the a6700 is very good, but the a7R Vl is better. I tested it on my daughter while she was running around in all directions—using the a6700 with the 300mm f/2.8 versus the a7R Vl in APS-C mode—and I got more sharp shots with the a7R Vl.

That said, the a6700 is priced really well, and using it with the 300mm f/2.8 was a real pleasure.

Of course, if Sony releases an APS-C model with the speed of an a1 II and a viewfinder worthy of the a7R Vl, I could easily sell the a7R Vl.
The only downside for me with the a7R Vl is the heavy crop in APS-C mode when shooting at 120p. When I shoot stills with the 1.4x teleconverter on the 300mm f/2.8, the crop is fine, but the APS-C video mode crops in too much and tends to have minor tracking issues (in 120p Super 35 mode).

So, for 120p video of birds, I stick to standard full-frame 120p and tend to use the 2x teleconverter to turn it into a 600mm lens. In short, there are many possibilities with the A7R Vl, as well as a lot of functions, button assignments...

Does anybody know how to turn off the Av Tv Ev dial guides that appear on the display? They go away after a few seconds but are still really annoying. Is there anyway not to show them at all?

For focus bracketing, can you set an end point that is not infinity?

Same on the A7RV (and likely other models), I never found a way to disable those and Google AI notes:

"the on-screen Av, Tv, and Ev dial helper graphics—which pop up whenever a dial is touched or a mode is changed—are an interactive part of the interface and cannot be permanently disabled as a standalone menu toggle. They are hardcoded into the display firmware to show active wheel assignments and functions."

To my knowledge, that is just a "warning" icon. For me anyway, it ONLY appears when I'm adjusting a dial in a mode that won't support it; which in turn alerts me I am probably in some mode other than what I thought I was in. IOW it only shows if I say try to adjust aperture in S mode, or try to adjust shutter speed in A mode. If I am in M mode, I can adjust either with no warning; similarly if I am in A mode I can adjust aperture with no warning popping up. So in that respect, I see it as a positive thing.

For me, I'm seeing it when I switch between the display options. I.e. I hit the up on the wheel to go between say the level or the histogram view. It shows up then disappears after a few seconds. If I rotate a dial (to change aperture or shutter), it doesn't come back.

This only happens in manual mode. Not A,S, or P. But I shoot 99.999% of the time in manual.

That was it. I had exposure comp set on the right back dial in manual mode.

Thank you! that was driving me crazy.

Yes, those warning icons only pop up when you try to do something wrong.

The one message that does really bug me is the splash screen that comes up when you switch the camera to S&Q video mode, and won't go away until you manually clear it. When I want to quickly grab a video clip, I usually want to start shooting immediately, not deal with clearing the message blocking the screen first.

Glad you got it solved. I believe that was what happened to me also, as I almost always used my A7RV & VI in manual exposure mode, and was probably sometimes hitting an exposure comp dial by mistake.

I'm very happy with the video performance of the 7R6...
* For wildlife I really like the 4k100p with a button assigned to toggle APSC mode on/off with appr.2x crop for massive reach with my FE400-800 this is great.

* DGO 4k25p= excellent

* Overall video performance is very good and when counting for the high megapixel it performs excellent.
* For video the filesize is very small and you do not need the latest hardware.

Coming from Canon R5M2
* Only the 4k25/30p FF are oversampled not the APSC mode
* 4k50/60p is line-skipped and not as good as Sonys pixelbinning+ oversampling
* Videofiles are very LARGE (Craw+Raw) 8K50/60p =2600Mbit/s a few minutes of recording on a 128 GB CF express card type B
* Need the latest hardware for you not going mad.

For anyone that’s had the A7R5 and upgraded to the R6, are you glad you decided to upgrade. I currently have the A1ii, A7R5 and A7V. I use my R5 heavily for macro and landscape work. I primarily use the A1ii for wildlife and just about anything because it’s a very versatile body. I really like the A7V but I always wish the resolution was more. I received the A7R6 today from Sony Pro Support for an evaluation loan, which I can keep 7 days. One thing I noticed right away is, how damn good the AF is. I would argue it’s better than both versions of the A1 which I shoot 6-7 days a week and have for the last nearly five years. The speed the R6 acquires focus and grabs the eye of a bird is nearly instantaneous. I’ve only had it out once and also shot some hummingbirds around my house this evening but I am really impressed from what I’ve seen so far. If I had one gripe, it would be starting over with a new battery because I already own 10 fz100 batteries and the charger is different. I have six more days to put it through some testing but I am already leaning toward buying one. I would have to sell one of the other bodies to put toward it or my wife wouldn’t be happy lol. I am considering selling the R5 and A7V both and go back to two bodies. This should more than cover the cost. I always take two bodies out when I go and normally have the 300 or 600gm on the A1 while having a macro lens or shorter zoom on the second body. I guess the question is, should I just stick with what I have or would it make more sense to get the new body, while also going back to two bodies? The A7V was sort of bought on a whim and hasn’t been used as much as I thought I would. It is a great camera and would be perfect if it were 45mp or so. Anyhow, any advice appreciated.

In your case it seems clear that selling the a7Rv and a7v to get the R6 is a good move. I think it basically combines the best parts of both cameras into one. Since you find you don't grab the a7v very much that is more indication to sell it.

It would be really nice having less rolling shutter and being able to use electronic shutter more often as well. The AF performance has just blown me away. It makes me think the A1ii is in need of a firmware update.
