p.1 #1 · Coming back to Sony - Family Travel Kit Recommendations

Hi All,

A few years ago I sold off an extensive Sony kit A7RIV, A7C, and quite a few lenses. I wasn't traveling and put the money into different hobbies.

I have relied on the iPhone the past few years to document family memories and travel because it was easy when the kids were younger, they are now 5 & 9 and I miss having a better kit. Comparing my iPhone photos to ones from the Sony kit they lack the magic.

My top two lenses/focal lengths before were the 24 GM and the 55/1.8. It looks like there are a lot of new interesting fast zoom lenses worth considering and that is where I am looking for some advice. We are going to Disneyland in a couple weeks, so that is a big driver.

I am thinking of maybe a single fast prime for portraits in the 40-55mm range and a zoom paired with an A7cii. Would love to hear what others are enjoying as a small kit for similar situations. It sounds like Sony/Tamron/Sigma all have some interesting zooms worth considering that could be great.

Thanks,
Eric

You've had the A7Riv and A7C, so think that would have you familiar with the body size alternatives. I have an A7Riv and A6700 - haven't been to Disneyland for a while, at least not since adding the 20-70/4.

Disneyland, perhaps more than Disneyworld, is fairly compact, uses a lot of forced perspective, things can be closer than they seem, maybe needing wider angles than out on real streets, jungles, distant planets, etc. It's a visually rich environment, attention to architectural details, costuming, very tempting for "photography." The conflict is, are you there to take pictures or have a family together fun time? (Not you necessarily, it hits everyone. Also, there is life beyond Anaheim. What might be better for the Mouse may not be better everywhere else?) I like to suggest emphasize the family and visit over the photography over too much gear, etc.

Practical side. There are some lockers available around the resort so you don't have to carry all your stuff, all the time. But maybe not always convenient. A few rides are high motion and the "pouches" to hold things aren't huge. There can be some splashing, too. Small World and Pirates move kind of slowly, most of the other "dark rides" go fast and I'd suggest enjoying the rides as opposed to trying to keep up with taking pictures. Disney has Photopass (if they still call it that) photographers all over the park and they can take your pictures, will take pictures using your camera, etc. Not current on the price structure for that.

I did the 30/1.4 on an aps-c one visit, 45mm ff angle of view. I think that's kind of long for Disney. I'm a zoom user, mostly, but would probably suggest something wider. A few times I've tried a Samyang 24/1.8 around SoCal (but not Disney) on the A7Riv and A6700 and it worked well on both. If it were me and the choice was 24mm or 45mm for Disney, I'd take the 24mm in general. (I don't do environmental portraits much so you could prefer something else longer?) For zooms, I've used an 18-135 or 28-200 on aps-c and ff, that's what I have.

I haven't had my 20-70/4 to Disneyland. It's kind of compact compared to things like the 28-200. For me, in general, because I have some longer lenses, and aps-c kit, too, I would prefer the A7 sized bodies over the A7Cs as an "only" body. However, if expecting a lot of walking, mostly smaller lenses or maybe at some point as the second body, etc. there are some benefits to the smaller lighter bodies.

For your first trip, maybe just pick up a Sony 24-50/2.8. Similar size to the 24GM.

I also like the recent Tamron 25-200 as a travel lens. It’s a bit bigger than the 24-50. Not necessarily needed for Disneyland, but other travel. You get f2.8 still at the wide end. For an upcoming trip I’m bringing this lens with the Sony 16/1.8 and Voigtlander 40/1.2.

I think some popular ones in the fast small-smallish primes would be:

TTA 40/2 (around 37mm)
Samyang 45/1.8
Sony 55/1.8

Mf:
Nokton 40/50 1.2
Simera 50/1.4

I like them all, unfortunately.

I cant speak to the zooms much but the 24-50 has crossed my mind a few times. Might not be giving you all that much over a 40mm ish prime if you were to take both though.

We did Universal Orlando last month and I took my a6700, Sigma 10-18/2.8 and Zony 24/1.8 and found the combination to be perfect for theme park action. I used the zoom for most of it and the prime for character interactions with my guy's niece and nephew. If I were going to do it with a FF, the 7cII sounds great, and I'd look at the Sony 16-25/2.8 and the Sigma 35/2 contemporary.

A7Cii or the A7CR...either of those really are an excellent option.

Personally, I think my A7CR was the better tool for travel/every-day carry because of the 61MPs (the extra cropping ability can help alleviate the need for a longer zoom).

Get a Sony 24-50mm f2.8 zoom, a Sigma i Series 65mm, and an A7C R. You'll have two excellent lenses with beautiuf rendering and a small size and the megapixels on the A7C R will allow you to crop to achieve the filed of view and image characteristics of a telephoto lens. And the whole kit is very small.

I travel with this kit and really never miss faster lenses:
a7cR, 20-70mm and Viltrox 14mm ƒ4. Super compact, super capable.

I’ve shot extensively at Disneyworld (more than 100 visits, as I used to be a FL resident passholder) and was just there a few weeks ago. I like to take only one lens on camera, no fussing around with lens changes, and an f/2.8 aperture enables the exposures I need for the magic hour just after sunset and indoors. On my last trip I was shooting candids of my niece, as well as personal images that capture my imagination at Disney, and a 24-70/2.8 or 28-75/2.8 is what works best for me, allowing quick focal length changes as needed for each composition.

A few from my recent visit to Magic Kingdom with an excellent copy of the Tamron 28-75/2.8 G2 (all shot wide open except for 3 & 6):

At one point I owned both the 24-50 and the 20-70. I almost always grabbed the 20-70 due to the extra range, I felt like a 35mm prime covered the 24-50 range well enough and you could then bring either a 1.4 lens for the same size or a much smaller lens. However I don't like how the 20-70 renders people, it has a digital edge an the bokeh is not good. Though I will say large prints I've made with it seem fantastic, it just comes across on the screen more digital - this may be my weakness in post processing fwiw.

I personally find the tamron 25-200 has better bokeh and is generally smoother than the 20-70 and it covers a bigger range. 2.8 at the 25/26mm range gives it some good pop for people images which often work well with the heavy vingetting at that range and aperture. It may be slightly less sharp at overlapping ranges and has some optical quirks that I'm still learning to work around though, but it literally adds a 70-200 into the same lens as a 24-70 so it's worth it to me. I'd look at the 25-200, the 24-50, or the 24-70 2.8 options if you want good family photos.

Ok my last few trips to Disney World I went with my A1ii and 28-200. I took too many great pics of my kids on rides to take anything shorter. I'm considering getting a A7cii and might take it next time (though I love the expressions I got at 30fps on the coasters).

I'd get the a7cr and the Tamron 28-200. That's been my go to lens for anything travel and family since getting it. It's so versatile that it almost never leaves my main body at this point. Now there are slightly wider versions from Sigma and Tamron that start at 20 & 25mm respectively. I always carry a UWA so I've held off getting one of the newer versions, plus the OG is a bit faster through the range. It's just so small, sharp, and has crazy reach. Pair it with something like the a7cr and you have an unreal amount of effective range when combined with the 61mp crop ability and 1.5x clear image zoom. Then grab your favorite fast prime or one of the compact G primes to keep it small. You can also go with small/ & fast with APS-c lenses to keep the kit smaller like the 11/1.8 or the various tiny f/1.4's in 12/15/23mm and so on, they cover to about a 1.3x crop.

Cheers

Chris

Appreciate all the feedback so far.

Just scored a great local deal on an A7cii. I am pretty sold on getting the Sony 20-70mm and just trying to decide on a fast prime to pair with it. Would love to do the 35GM but am thinking of staying small for now and want something with AF.

I did the same thing, I tried loving the a7CII (I had the a7RV but I don't need a slow-scanning 61mp sensor) but I just didn't love the EVF and the handling of that thing. It is small, but not really small enough). I even tried loving a Nikon Z6 III which I think is one of the best value cameras out there, but just wasn't my thing. The great-to-be-back-home feeling came with the Sony a7V. All the performance I ever need at this point. Slam a 24-50/2.8 on there and be there. Add a 85/1.8 prime down the line. Buy the gear used if you can. Case closed.

The Sigma 35mm f2 should pair nicely and functionally, since both it and 20-70 have aperture rings and are weather sealed (sigma is only weather sealed on the mount).

As you saw in the comments, there are a lot of 20-70G fans and a smaller minority of us 28-200 Tamron cheerleaders. If you don't need the **vast** focal length range from 20-27mm, the 28-200 is a better choice because it is faster over most of the overlapping range and has that "bonus reach" up to 200mm.

As for your primes, the Sigma 35i is lovely and can be acquired inexpensively used. I have often substituted the 35GM with the 35i while traveling, but I am doing that less and less since I prefer many aspects about the 35GM despite its bulk. Other thoughts about travel primes:
55ZA - so small you could add it as a third prime. Has known CA issues, but you've already owned one so you know. Cheap to acquire used
24GM - my favorite rendering native GM prime I own (don't own 85GM v1, which I understand is similar in character)
20G - small and renders nicely. Might be a bit of overlap if paired with the 20-70G but makes a good companion to the 28-200 if you go that route. Unfortunately, mine languishes a bit due to the 14GM.
14GM - oh man, this has become a staple of my travel kit. I love the color, contrast and FOV. A little on the large side, but super fun once you get acquainted with it.

We've been doing Disney World and then later Universal Orlando with our daughter for a decade, always with a camera body. Favorite combo's were a Sony A7R2/3 & 24GM, then decided I wanted something wider & did the 14GM on my then new A7cR.

After looking at my shots and seeing what I actually needed/used over the years from a speed & FL standpoint, next week we're doing Epic Universe & the other Universal parks with only the A7cR & 16-25 2.8. I agree with others when it comes to switching lenses, and in parks you're up closer to things so generally wider is better IMO.
