I received an "invitation" to display photos at an art exhibition. I checked the website everything appears legit. The theme also fits into my photos, however they are not 'art' - they are photos made for day to day consumers. So I believe this is a scam - I am guessing there an entrance fee, a printing and framing fee, in the thousands of dollars. Or they could scam you in other ways. Anyone receive or heard something similar? I m trying to understand what how these people operate before responding.
Good to proceed cautiously. A friend of mine fell for the caller's line, "I've seen your work and want you to shoot my wedding.... oh, and rent the reception hall, you'll be reimbursed." Someone bought a mailing list, I'll bet. Do you belong to a photo club?
If it's pay to show, then it's not necessarily a scam, but so called "vanity galleries" are definitely a thing in the fine art community and generally something to be avoided.
Ultimately it depends on your goals, but these types of exhibitions almost never actually help sell your work, and unless it's a well known organization I'd pass.
I got such unsolicited emails from an organization in Toronto called RAW Artists (now Public Display Agency). I have seen your work on Instagram. Your work is so great. I invite you exhibit at our show at some loud venue. Pay $500 or sell $500 worth of tickets to your friends and family to attend the show. Buyer beware.
