I suspect a woven cotton(?) thread of some kind. I do not think it is nylon or another synthetic material.
It is from a setting of old steam powered logging equipment, I have no idea of the vintage. Next I'm out that way I'll ask and grab more images - maybe tomorrow, sounds like a good idea. Gives me a mission
