p.1 #1 · Help! A1’s LCD screen not displaying

Welp, after years of steady performance, the LCD screen on my Sony A1 stopped showing content. No menu, no photos on review, no Live View when shooting.

The LCD screen is clearly on—I can see its backlight turn on when I remove my eye from the viewfinder—but it does not display anything. Camera otherwise performs well, I just need to use the viewfinder.

Here’s what I’ve tried:

1. Inspected the screen for damage. Nope—no cracks, blotchiness, or anything.
2. I’ve ensured that the viewfinder sensor isn’t blocked (which would send images to the viewfinder instead of the LCD).
3. Finder/Monitor is set to Auto.
4. I’ve toggled the DISP button to ensure that I didn’t turn off the LCD (and I have double-checked the DISP settings).
5. I’ve reset all settings.
6. I’ve initialized the camera (which I believe restores it to factory settings).
7. I’ve removed the battery overnight.

Any suggestions for what’s going on? Thanks for any suggestions.

Be very careful not to set it to monitor only. If the monitor is not working, it will be very difficult to navigate the menu to get back to vf usage.

Does the evf shut off when the sensor is triggered? If so I would guess there is a bad cable to the monitor.

The same thing happened to my A1, and it's now on its way back from the service center. The service note says the whole LCD module was replaced in my case...
I think it might be the LCD cable (the wide one protruding from the back of the screen/hinge) at fault, as I remember I sometimes managed to get it back to work by gently pressing it.

Thanks, I almost found that out the hard way. Yes, the EVF switches properly when the sensor is triggered.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I did check to ensure the DISP button wasn’t causing the problem. Alas, it was not.

Hmm, thank you. I’m hoping that’s not it—but as you can see, I’m running out of things to try. Out of curiosity, how much did the replacement cost?
