The iPhone app may be different but on my Android phone Lightme has an analog interface of sorts. Two scales, one of which slides up or down against the other when you click the measure button.
You asked about external meters. I have not used a meter for 40 years so I can't answer directly. (I found it inconvenient.) But as I posted earlier, I've compared Lightme, my Z5ii, and my Nikkormat. They agree. Of course the Nikkormat has center-weighted metering and the Z5ii has choices, while the camera is presumably whatever its camera sees. So I did that against a uniformly-lit wall. I have since used them to set ISO on an original F w/Photomic viewfinder powered by alkaline batteries instead of mercury. It also has center-weighted metering, though seemingly different from the Nikkormat's. It's exposures came out just fine.
So the conclusion is that Lightme works as well as the cameras' meters. But you may have to apply some judgment with high-contrast scenes.
