p.1 #5 · Tempered glass saved my Z8 from a very expensive repair
Looks like it did its job, but keep in mind that tempered glass is designed to spider crack like that instead of exploding into shards. It's not necessarily what would have happened to the Z8 screen, though given the obvious dings on the body, I'm sure it would have had to still be replaced.

I think those come with the back glass in a kit but I never bother to install them. The only time I ever damaged the top glass was about 30 years ago. How did you manage to do that?

EBH
I had the camera clipped to my chest with a Peak Design Capture Clip and honestly forgot it was there for a second. I opened the door like normal, and it ended up slamming into the top of the camera instead of clearing me.

The top screen on my recently purchased D850 was completely broken with a screen protector added ...
I was surprised to find that Nikon's original screen may well be hardened against scratches but it's not shatterproof ...
I looked all over for an original replacement to no avail .... the protector screens are 0.3mm thick laminated glass on plastic so it would have been set in below the top body height ....
In the end I ordered 10X 1mm thick clear microscope slides and cut them to size with a diamond tipped glass cutter and diamond file .....
It's bummer that Nikon would not supply an original screen ....

I disassembled a D810 a few years ago and installed a fleebay screen cover replacement for the original part and you couldn’t tell… might be worth looking there. 🤷♂️
