p.1 #1 · ETZ21 pro+ very tight, does it damage the mount?

Just got the megadap adapter. I found it needing a lot of force to turn it into place. Would it cause damage to the mount if regularly taking it on and off? Would Nikon be able to replace the mount in that case?

Thanks!

I now have 3 lenses that require the adapter. I am constantly changing lenses with 3 other Z mounts.

I noticed the same thing you describe, but one of my 2 adapters is just a tiny bit harder to install then the other. The Nikon mount is made out of very hardened material. I suspect if one of these interfaces were to degrade, it likely would be the Techart, but I have no way of proving that. I do not see Techart using harder materials than Nikon, which has been making Prograde solutions for a lot longer. I see it as a low risk, but a legitimate question nevertheless. Over thousands of installations some wear could occur but quite honestly, you will probably have worn out your shutter or upgraded by then. But yes, mounts can be replaced.

As long as it remains hard to install, don't worry (I am not). That could be "normal" but if it starts to become easy, you need to compare another Z lens you own for "slop" on the body without the adapter. Also try to find a second body that is not going to have Techarts installed. Do this study now and compare the feel and lock it in your mind so if questions arise later you will have a "baseline." I suspect Techart deliberately targeted the tight side of the specification to avoid a sloppy fit which would be a bigger problem. The amount of "communication that goes through these devices is substantial.

As a side, these adapters were very instrumental in helping me fill gaps in my lens lineup that I could not fill with Z mount offerings. Truly amazing pieces of gear. The Sony to Nikon Techart is one of the reasons I finally left FTZ's for good, basically selling F mounts and replacing them with upgraded Sony lenses when it made sense to do so. Love the options that these open up.

I just got my Pro+ adapter on the 23rd. I noticed that it was way tight on the lens mount side, and thought at first that I wouldn't even be able to fit the lens on it. But after playing around with the supplied cap, I noticed that it rotates easily around 3/4 way in, then you have to apply slightly more force, which I eventually did with the lens (though of course at first I was deathly afraid of breaking the adapter... not so much the lens as the one I tried the adapter with is the ages old Sony 18-55mm kit lens that has already seen it all).

One peculiarity is that the aperture is reported to be f/5.3 at the long end instead of f/5.6. Would've been worse if it had been the other way around, though. But it seems to meter and focus normally, even though the lens itself is nothing to write home about.

Yes, it is tighter on the lens side. I should also add to my previous post that I am using 1 adapter permanently fixed to a Sony 50 1.4, and the other gets swapped onto a Sony 135 or a 35mm on a Samyang 35 Series 2

Okay, my adapter is tight on the mount side as well, though not to the same extent as the lens side. That must be somehow intentional on the maker's part?

Return that adapter! I purchased a ETZ-21 a a couple years ago and it was incredibly and concerningly tight fitting when being mounted on my Z9 - strangely it was fine on a Z6. I reached out to Megadap a number of times and received zero response. I returned the item, and purchased a ETZ-21 Pro just to try. It mounts just like a normal lens should. I don't know if they have some QA issues or what, but either way their support is non-existant.

I don’t have this adapter but several years ago I bought a Metabones adapter for using Canon EF lenses on the Sony E mount. The adapter fit tightly, similar to what you described. Bottom line, it ultimately damaged the contacts of the lens and camera mount contacts so I would be cautious. This is why I quit using such adapters.

Reporting back…

It seems like it was only right that first time. I don’t know what happened. Hope nothing bad happened to the camera mount.

Now it locks onto the camera mount the same as my other z lenses, and I haven’t noticed any looseness with my other z lenses either
