I am an old time user of Flickr and I am looking to build an online portfolio with a more pro look and eventually the ability to sell prints, do you have any suggestions about what to look for?
I’m not sure what platforms you can access in Italy, but I use Wix for my business. They have multiple photography templates and resources to help. If you want a simple site, I use ShootProof and they have the ability to sell your images on the site.
I’m sure others can provide additional alternatives.
I used Smugmug for my sports photography for many years. Sold many photos and there were lots of options for setting it up. Sales reporting was very good, and payment was also easy to setup.
Where I worked, we used Squarespace, but we didn't sell anything, although it gets advertised as having the ability to sell.
I have been building websites for (Jeez, I can’t believe this!) 30 years. For over a decade I have used Wordpress, which is the dominant platform for such things right now. I run self-hosted sites (not just my photo site) using a couple of different hosting services. For most people, simply going with wordpress’s own hosting is probably the easiest solution. (You can set up a basic site for free with wordpress and try it out. Expect a little bit of a learning curve, but it is not that daunting.)
There are TONS of templates for wordpress sites, including many designed for photography and portfolios.

I actually have a hosting plan with WordPress but can't find a suitable template to try and do something myself, could you please point out some who would do the job?

This could be an option to start and find out with a low entry price tag, grazie

Forgot about SmugMug, a while ago it kind of partnered with Flickr where I have an account but totally forgot about it, grazie

Ciao,
would you be so kind and point me to some templates which might do it to build a photo portfolio?
I use Pixieset and am very happy as a pro. I use them for my portfolio site, client gallery site, and studio manager. They have print options and a lot of flexibility. I’m happy with them.

Sorry I did not get back to you on this.
I use a template that I designed on my own at my site*, but Wordpress has a TON of templates including some designed for photography, both free and paid. You can access all of them from within any wordpress site.
One way to play with this is to get a basic free starter wordpress.com site and try it out.
Good luck.
Dan
*More accurately, I started with a wordpress template and modified it heavily.
I just finished publishing a site using WordPress. I used AI agents to pull in over 15 years of photos using Python scripts targeting Flickr. Then Python again to put them in a clickable and searchable catalog. It was a pretty big and fasinating job. Over 4K photos and 1000 species of birds.
Never would of done it with out AI agents working for me..
Slowroadsouth.com. Main page you will see a button to launch the catalog.
Personally if you don’t want to fiddle with the design I would go for a ready made solution like square space etc.
if instead you want to invest into designing it because you want a modern look, that looks great on mobile with nice motions etc, I would look into framer https://www.framer.com/marketplace/templates/categories/portfolio/

One bit of feedback, your site would benefit from lightbox support when clicking images instead of opening them as new tabs.
Hey Scott. I tried, and tried.
Why it wouldn't help here: it only works on images you place directly into WordPress's own content editor — images WordPress actually "knows about" as part of the page. My 1,110 bird thumbnails live inside a separate file I uploaded and just linked to; WordPress has no idea those images even exist, since it never processed them as content. So this built-in feature literally can't reach them, same reason a plugin couldn't either.
Since something on WordPress.com's end was silently blocking the JavaScript from running, but had no reason to block plain CSS (styling isn't a security risk the way running arbitrary code is), the CSS approach worked right away without a fight.
So CSS was a quick fix.
It's a new website and I am working on it when i have time. It will evolve.
