He doesn't have the magical mount adaptor anymore unfortunately. It's secretly half the reason I want yours The other being I know it'd be a good copy and you picked it after trying a bunch of different lenses. I was still thinking about the nokton 1.2 for Sony but it's another chunky one. And maybe the VM version would be nicer to have on the MP, but if I had the ultron maybe I wouldn't need it and I could use it for digital too.

I did read someone mention once that he carved out his own adaptor from a normal one using a compass and some sandpaper or something - I even tried it but didn't get very far. Was sitting there for like 30 mins and think I barely made a dent.

Very fair price considering it's with the PCX though. That was a small pain to get and set up. Thank you for the mention.

A picture I found of it on stevehuff website next to the distagon to keep things more on-topic:

The question now is, is anyone buying this lens new? It's $2400!

That is indeed a valid question. One might also ask:

Why would anyone spend $2,019 (current B&H price for black ZM) when they could get the ‘Lux for $6,415?

(I might also add that everyone should be free, with the usual provisos, to spend their money exactly how they choose. It’s their money.)

But, I think the aspect that is omitted here, isn't just the absolute value of the mass unto itself. I think that the matter is extended / multiplied as a matter of the vector force(s) associated with torque.

When holding the camera body, having a cantilevered weight of different mass, and different length will yield a different force on the wrist / hand that is trying to hold the mass steady, square, plumb and level, etc.

Add in the fact that

Beautifully put, if I may say so.

As for “getting used to” almost anything, well, I used to have a Canon 500mm f/4 lens (the earlier version) which, IIRC, weighed about 3.9kg. On a camera that was probably about 1kg. Just sayin’ ….

(And I’m confident that the breakfast I’ve just eaten was considerably more than 44g. I don’t know what torque it will produce, though …. )

Ive bought this lens 4 times in the past 3 years. I recently bought the Leica 35 apo w.close focus.
I haven't missed the zm since.
Same if not better iq, closer focus and much smaller

If the zm had close focusing built in, id still have it

Leica operates in a much higher orbit - they in essence take a money is no object (especially if it’s yours!) approach to designing their lenses. So they can make them small, optically excellent, and focus closely. Also the haptics - feel and finish - tend to be great.
The ZM Distagon is huge. It is. The focus ring feels sticky as if they use molasses as a lubricant. But the worst part is the CV lenses seem to offer better build quality, high image quality and nicer handling for a lot less money. And we are not even mentioning the latest Chinese entrants.

The ZM is IMO in the no-man’s land of too expensive, too big with too many other choices in either direction.

I'd guess the ZM was probably designed with use on the Zeiss Ikon ZM as it's primary goal. Even though it is extra front heavy on the lighter magnesium body (relative to a Leica M body), the amazing finder with lovely eye relief means that the 35/1.4 doesn't intrude as much. That being said, I don't imagine there are that many of us that have both (I do and can attest that the Ikon works well this lens).

From an optical design perspective it is an evolution of the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 v1/v2 design...which was an even bigger/huger/waytoolarge. I am curious how/why they (Zeiss/Cosina) settled on internal focusing, but my guess is that it was to protect/simplify some part of the floating mechanism.

All the cons are true. I think Huss summarized them well. Though, I don't think I'd ever sell my copy. It just works and honestly disappears in use. At 1.4 I can put the subject/object anywhere in the frame and it will be sharp (excluding operator error). You'll never need a hood (which is good because the lens is already huge). The contrast and rendering are lovely. My Leica 11874 looks nicer and feels better to fondle, but its results aren't as predictable/dependable.

Yeah I don't see selling mine either. Because for the money I paid for it - about $1100 - the optical quality rules. But I could never see buying this new.

Completely agree. I paid $1300 for mine...which is a very fair price.

The ZM 35/1.4 was a johhny-come-lately back in 2014, after Zeiss had had a decade to reflect on the first wave of ZM lenses released in 2004-2005. Only one ZM was faster than f2 - the 'queen of quirk' C Sonnar. This ZM 35mm design looks like a Voigtlander lens by all appearances, with no fewer than three APD elements and the now standard two aspherical elements.

As people come to see how valuable MFDs of 0.3m actually are, and what they buy you in bokeh and compositions (with FLE), 0.7m will soon be seen as very limiting in a 35mm.

Maybe the damping level of the focus ring was used to work with the rapid 90 degree focus ring. For an instant comparison, the new ML Otus 35/1.4 (reportedly) has no less than 260 degrees of focus turn, to 'ensure intentionality'. Rapid focus rings are a 'tell' for street lenses, but you better brush up on your fine motor skills.

Zeiss was also embarking on a misbegotten 'bigger is better' move in mid-decade, with several kilo plus pro lenses for the decaying DSLR mounts. They made sure to give them all the Zeiss levy in the RRP, as an aggravation of long standing, and a barrier to entry for many.

Very useful perspective, thanks. You’re completely right about both the size of the ZM and the haptics of Leica lenses, I’m sure. And indeed, the quality of modern CV lenses too, although, having owned the CV 35mm f/1.4 Classic and f/1.5 Asph, I still feel that the ZM’s image quality is in a league of its own (for native M-mount 35mm lenses faster than f/2). As for the list price, well, it was perhaps understandable ten years ago when the only real alternative was the ‘Lux, but it looks a bit daft relative to the price of the excellent, more recent CV lenses. Mind you, I think B&H were, briefly, offering a reduction of over $800 a week or two ago, which was tempting ….

Rather foolishly, I traded in my ZM when I bought a Summilux pre-FLE Asph just under two years ago. Which, although I’m happy with the ‘Lux (it is a pleasure to use), was a mistake. Having never possessed both at the same time, I can’t give an apples-to-apples comparison, but these two snaps are reasonably representative of what I have found with respect to flare resistance, which I care about. (Even the ZM can exhibit a bit of CA at times, I think.) The first ZM image is unprocessed, other than LR defaults. The ‘Lux one has been edited, particularly to boost shadows and reduce highlights.

For quite a while now, I have been wondering about repurchasing the ZM. For me, it is the epitome of the Zeiss character, which I love. Threads like this don’t exactly help ….

First trip with the Zeiss, was only a short one. Taken with the A7cii (no pcx):

Definitely need quite a bit more time with it to tame it.

Thank you! He was a monster this trip, but he had a good time, so did we - finally some sun here.

The Urth magnetic filters came in really handy with the strong sun. Half the shots I couldn't even see through the viewfinder. I'm not sure how well the "auto brightness" setting for the viewfinder is working and had to manually increase it. And sometimes block the light with one hand while focussing with the other. I can't tell you what was holding the camera in place or pressing the shutter.

Just saw the pics on my calibrated monitor and they're lacking some colour, looked really good on windows! I'll leave them as is here.

The zeiss was really good with taking snazzy pics, sometimes it's a bit much for some family photos and could have done with stopping a bit. Initially the bokeh was annoying me in general but it grew on me.

I need to learn when to stop it down more and by how much next. There's a couple I really love and I know those aren't wide-open but it's tough without the exif. Eventually that shouldn't matter as much I guess.

Hopefully I'll get there, I really like it. I wish it was a little smaller of course, but that's actually mostly because with the filters it's pushing the small bag to the limit a bit! And I really like the bag In the hand i dont have an issue with it. ive never tried the fle/noctilux and i am curious (and scared for the wallet) but not in any rush. I use the a7cii with the bottom plate from smallrig's l-bracket with basically every lens, and I carry the setup in a little wotoncraft 2L bag with a sliding quick release latch. It's a little tight of a fit but only just so im hoping it eases a bit with time. The lack of zips and one hand open really help with getting it out quickly.

Well,

I was in Florida over the weekend for a wedding. Took the Distagon and it never came off the camera. It has become my goto lens for almost anything.

Here are a few snaps

I keep adding to my Distagon album here
