p.1 #1 · Anyone still shooting the Z7ii? Would you buy one today?
I'm thinking about picking one up as today appears to be the last day of the holiday sale. I don't shoot video (or wildlife currently) and I want a mechanical shutter. I shot a friend's Z8 and the electronic shutter felt weird to me, but I did not spend a lot of time with it either (and it is a bigger camera). Would love the new EVF of the Z6iii but think I would prefer more megapixels and saw references to DR compromises.
Curious as to what the thoughts are on the current line up.

I like my Z7II I have three of them, they do have high mp, the fps is fast enough for big animals, flying birds, give me my Z8, it is light and small. It is so much easier to carry it out and about, if you are shooting street, travel, or landscape it will do the job just fine. I often put M mount glass on it to go manual and even lighter and for most lenses it adapts very well. I hope there is a Z7III and I will buy at least one if there is. My opinion is the sensor for the Z8 gives me slightly better imagery, but the difference is small. If you can get one at a great price it is a very good camera for most practical uses.

At the current sale price or mint used I find the Z7II to be the best value for a landscape camera with its beautiful image quality and light/small form factor. I really enjoyed mine when I owned it. If you don’t desire the latest Nikon processor and improved AF in the newer gen models then it can be a solid choice for the money, and literally the only choice currently in Nikon’s lineup for anyone who wants that fantastic sensor in a small/light body.

It still has the best image quality of any Nikon camera, a nice form factor, and the ability to save user settings is a nice bonus. I would like to see Nikon update it with better AF, but for landscapes that's not a big deal.

I have Leica M and a Canon R5, but was wanting to tip my toe back into Nikon. I had the Z6 and Z7 when they came out and really like the form factor. I ended up selling out of Nikon when I was getting back into my Leica M system. I do a bit of motorcycle travel, travel for work occasionally and do light hiking with my dog so was wanting a smaller body, maybe a 24-120 and a few primes. It probably makes no sense since I have the R5, but I guess none of this hobby does sometimes

It's kind of wild that the Z7ii has basically entered into the disposable cost territory while still being IMO the best full frame landscape camera available.
It has its share of annoyances (mixed media, no vertical tiit on the LCD, the old terrible button layout that requires two hands to enter playback, so-so IBIS, a mediocre EVF, not great battery life, and a bunch of missing new nice to have features), but it does so while being extremely cheap and still outputting gorgeous files.
I was but a babe in the Nikon woods, taking the Z7ii to chase Sandhills around Colorado...100% the wrong kit for the job, but there wasn't another option at the time outside the Z9 which I couldn't afford, and I still came back with some shots I'll love forever. It's a camera that feels like it's letting you down in the field sometimes but when you come back, the results are surprising...this is due to the EVF not being high res enough to critically review anything.

I should mention, however, that if you have ANY desire to shoot things that move, the Z8 is the far more flexible, capable, and future proof camera. It has the better rear screen, smoother EVF, no blackout, CFE-B for unlimited buffer, and on and on. A much longer term investment.
You get used to the no blackout very fast and then wonder how you ever lived without it.

I keep looking for one around or below 1300 and missed out on a couple. My set up I figure is ZF for every day, Z7ii when I want higher mpx and OM1.2 for things that move fast (while keeping my kit small)!

That’s cool you have experience with the exact same body in the original Z7, so you know what to expect with the ergonomics and build (both of which I find quite good). And I totally understand about gear thoughts and changes not always making sense, same for me, but I find that having fun in the process is a worthy pursuit, and enhances my joy when I’m in the field making images.

I had a "go big or go home" moment and got the Z8 . Thanks all!
Congrats!! I don’t think you’ll regret it. I got my Z8 a couple days ago and I am impressed, even though I owned a Z9 a few years ago. Just putting the camera in hand speaks volumes about the Nikon professional legacy. Let us know how you like it.

Unless you're shooting fast moving birds or need to track fast moving birds, the Z7II is a gem of a camera. I would definitely own one as a travel/lightweight alternative if I had extra money. However, I have the Z9 and Z8 and the Z8 isn't really all that much heavier.

I never liked the Z7 sensor myself. Seemed to have more difficulty recovering shadow vs the lower MP sensors of its day. Haven’t played with the Z8 though so maybe I’d be more satisfied there? Still I’ve printed as large as I’m likely to print with 24MP cameras and happy with the output so my experience isn’t for all.

Completely antithetical to my experience, though I had the Z7ii. I'd expose for highlights and raise shadows all day without complaint. I found shadow recovery better than the A7R4 I was comparing it against.
