How many lenses for Aurora?

p.1 #1 · How many lenses for Aurora?

Hi, I'm going to Norway and would appreciate some advice.

I have a v good 14mm for the aurora, is there any point in also renting a 20mm? Other than the loss of pixels, can cropping recreate the 20mm lens? Just wondering if there might be issues like the distortion from the 14 which makes it not possible to replicate a 20?

Thanks!

20mm f/1.4 is a good choice, I shot the aurora in the Lofoten Islands with 14/1.8 and 24/1.4.

Thanks. Did you feel you couldn’t crop in enough? I’ll have 60 MP at 14 so even if I lose half it seemed fine, and by cropping I remove the edges where aberrations are most likely?

Did you use both at the same time or just pic one to use each night?

Crop is acceptable, and in most cases, it's unnecessary, because the aurora is very vast.

In fact, the reason an F1.4 lens is needed is because it allows for faster shutter speeds when the aurora is weak.
