p.1 #1 · Help me replicate my Fuji setup in Sony

I primarily shoot Nikon for wildlife, but I have a small Fuji setup for street and travel photography. I'm contemplating moving to Sony for the street/travel setup to get full frame and improved autofocus. Can someone suggest the equivalent Sony package to my Fuji collection? (I shoot sometimes in conditions that benefit from weather sealing.)

X-T5
18mm 1.4 (interior architecture and landscape, + sharp)
23mm 2.8 (light and unobtrusive for street work)
23mm 1.4 (interior architecture and landscape, + sharp)
35mm 2 (light and unobtrusive for street work)
56 1.2 (low light, + sharp)

I was in your shoes, moving from X-T3 to Sony.

It will not be equivalent, it will be somewhat heavier if you want a decent EVF quality and go with the A7V. But if EVF doesn't matter, a C-series body like A7CR will be smaller/lighter.

Speaking of lenses, they too will be bigger and heavier, the price for a bigger image circle. To stay on the compact side, look at Sony G-series primes (20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm) or Sigma's contemporary series of lenses.

I will say that autofocus, even Sony autofocus, is not ideal for the street. I always had an easier time with manual focus by combining pre-focusing and zone focusing. In fact, to save on weight/bulk I am considering a Fuji body again with a Voigtlander lens. When I look back on my street photographs, not surprisingly 99.9% of them are utter garbage (toughest genre IMO) but a few of those 0.01% images that I like were made with the X-T3 and adapted M-mount 35mm Nokton. Basically, in almost 3 years I couldn't produce a single street shot on Sony with AF.

The Sony A7V + Sony 20–70 f/4 G really does cover almost everything in a compact package. In my opinion, starting with the 20–70 and adding primes later as specific needs emerge makes a lot of sense.

I don't see the point with adding a third system. If you want to go full full frame I guess Nikon has some good camera to offer? At the moment they also offer better focusing aid for manual focusing than Sony do.
Maybe you have a certain reason to chose Sony? (Yes I'm a Sony user and have been that since the A7 was introduced.)

Probably for the open mount with 300 lens options...

Not adding a third system. If I go Sony, I'd sell the Fuji setup. But you make a good point about Nikon. I've looked at the Z6 III and the Zf as possibilities. They're just a bit bigger and slightly smaller file size for enlargements. Worth reconsidering.

All good choices, depending on budget, low light needs and size/weight considerations:
A7v, A7iv, A7C or A7Cii
Sony 24/1.4 GM or Samyang 24/1.8 or Sigma 24/2
Sony 35/2.8 ZA or Samyang 35/2.8 or Samyang 35/1.8
Sony 35/1.4 GM or Sigma 35/2
Viltrox 50/2 Air or Samyang 45/1.8
Sony 85/1.4 GM II, or Sigma 85/1.4 or Sony 85/1.8 or 85/1.8 Batis or Viltrox 85/2 EVO
*** for weather sealing, choose the higher price options.

It only highlights your desperation, so I welcome it.

Adapted lenses only reinforce that it is closed. It is utterly laughable that you equate using a clunky third party adapter to being an open sustem. To be so intentionally disingenuous shows a staggering amount of cope.

Nikon rebadging tamron lenses with a price hike also tells all. No sigma does as well.

So please do...show how desperate closed mount owners are to jistify their poor choices. Nikon and Canon were cleae from the get go. They are laughing all the way to the bank. Tribalism often overrides logic. Brand loyalista will buy in anyway, and many have. That is the power of brands and the masses.

Randomly related - finally got my hands on a Z8 after having previously played around with a Z9. Fantastic camera in hand - really reminded me of my beloved D810. Big and heavy, sure, but if one doesn't mind the increased size and weight and has bigger hands, it would be a mistake to choose a system without getting to handle one.

Also got to play with a Viltrox 35/1.2 in e mount - what a tank of a lens. Really lovely. It's also available for Nikon, and I must say 25 year old me would have been instantly pining after that Z8 Viltrox 35 combo, nicely complimentary build. 51 year old me has to think about it...

This is a pretty great start. Camera body, you just have to get them in hand and see which one you like. Lenses:

18/1.4 - Sony 24/1.4 - wider than the 18 on Fuji, but also an equivalent stop faster. Unmatched bokeh for a 24. Also consider the Sigma 24/2. Bonus - if you want some mischievous fun, ask the forum why there isn't a fast Sony 28mm...

23/2.8 - Sony Zeiss 35/2.8. Really small, really light, really sharp - very underrated lens for Sony. One of the originals. Also a stop faster

23/1.4 - Sony 35GM - stop faster, sharp everywhere at all apertures, excellent bokeh. Also consider the Sigma 35/2.

35/2 - Sony 50/2.5, Sony Zeiss 55/1.8, Sigma 50/2, Sigma 45/2.8 - The 45/2.8 is the most interesting lens of the bunch in terms of rendering, the others are all just excellent, well behaved lenses. The new Viltrox Air 50/2 is getting some good press.

56/1.2 - Sony 85/1.4GM, Sigma 85/1.4 - both faster. There are new third party options that are all pretty good too, from Viltrox, Sirui, Meike, etc.

There are lots of options, Sony or otherwise, in pretty much every focal length. I really like the build of the Sigma i series; their Art lenses are great too. The new Viltrox lenses are also over achievers.

I should also add, if you're ok with a lens longer than 50mm but shorter than 85mm, the Sigma 65/2 is truly exceptional. Sigma often puts it on sale for a few hundred dollars off and it's a fantastic deal that that price.

The question of manual versus auto focus for street is complicated. It is true that pre-focusing or relying on zone focus is faster than any AF… but it is also less accurate, and to the extent that it maters to you that may limit the size of the prints/reproductions you can create.

If you are striving for ideal focus, AF is generally both faster and more accurate than AF in street photography situations, though it sometimes “gets lost” and you’ll lose a shot here and there. But that’s true with manual focus, too.

Of course, from a pure size/weight perspective, there are some very small and light MF lenses… though some of the Fujifilm primes (and, I assume, primes available for Sony) that AF can be quite small, too.

Each to his own, but I prefer to rely on AF for fast-moving street photography.

YMMV>

For the lenses I would look at the 20/1.8G, 35GM, and 85GMii. The 20 will be significantly wider than your 18, but I think it proves better spacing on the primes as 24 is rather close to 35. The 20G is also sharper than the 24GM. I’m not sure why they gave it a G label it certainly performs every bit as good as a GM prime. These are easy recommendations for the sharp primes.

For the compact street lenses, maybe listen to others on this. I would look at the samyang Tiny series, also the Sony 50/2.5G, and the Sigma I series.

The Sigma 45/2.8 is known for very pleasant rendering, but the AF is marginal. I think that is because of the undercorrected spherical aberration that was a purposeful design decision. It might be fine for street, I found the slight misses frustrating for indoor portraits. It can be had very cheap on the used market, and there are often steep sales on the new market.

For me the 35GM is small enough for street, so maybe just a Sigma 50/2 i or 50/2.5G depending on how fast you want.

For the camera I’m assuming you want a smaller one. So either the a7cii or a7cr depending on the resolution you want. A7V or a7Rv are also good options if you want a full size camera.

How do you shoot, I mean the technique? Center focus point AF + recompose? The thing about "street photography" is that it's not a well defined genre.

Some of it is slow and AF works fine:

But for something like this, I never figured out how to leverage autofocus:

... and those are some of my favorite shots (and generally I prefer motion in an image). That's why I've settled on f/8, prefocus, and "be there" (which is the hard part!)

18/1.8 ~= 28/2.5
23/2.8 ~= 35/4
23/1.4 ~= 35/2
35/2 ~= 50/2.8
56/1.2 ~= 85/1.8

The 28-70/2 GM alone can potentially replace all these lenses.

I wouldn't give up that Fuji gear, you can't replace it with same FF lenses just for better AF.
18 1.8 - not replaceable, most FF 28mm lenses are huge (Sigma 28 1.4) or has inferior optical performance (Sony 28 F2). The new Voigtlander 28 APO has better optical performance than Fuji, especially with 60MP sensor, but no AF. Closest bet in price/size Sigma 24 F2 DN, but it's not 28mm.
23 2.8 - no such small 35mm pancake lens with AF, Sony 35 2.8 and Samyang 35 2.8 are the smallest, but still not pancake size. Perhaps the upcoming SG 35 f2.2, but I wouldn't expect significant better AF with this lens than Fuji.
23 1.4, 35/2, 56 1.2: Those lenses are replaceable. For example: Sigma 35 DN, Viltrox Air 50 f2, Viltrox evo 85 f2.

If you can live with bit different focal lengths my recommendations:
Lenses: Sigma 24F2, 45 F2.8, 65F2. 45 F2.8 alternatives as walk-around: Sony 35 2.8 (compact 35mm) or a higher resolution Sony 40 f2.5. 85mm low light instead of 65mm: Sigma 85 1.4.
Top tier option: 24GM, 50 1.2GM and 40 f2.5 for street. (I'd get 60MP camera in this case, A7CR instead of A7CII, A7RIVa or A7RV).
Camera:
If you prefer flippy screen: A7IV
Compact flippy screen (especially with 45 2.8): A7CII
A7RIVa if you want high quality EVF, excellent quality tilt screen, battery life, for cheapest, AF is excellent but no latest AI subject recognition
A7RV the top tier option

The Fujifilm 18/1.4 can potentially be replaced with the Viltrox 28/1.8. The Viltrox is a good lens except for having a non-clickable aperture ring.

You can have many setups , try this one :
Batis 25mm f2 330g
Sony 35mm f1.8 280g
Zeiss 35mm f2.8 120g
Zeiss 55mm f1.8 280g
Batis 85mm f1.8 450g

I use the 25mm ,55mm and 85mm , maybe I will get the 35mm 2.8 one day . Check the Batis image thread in this forum.

Without rehashing the whole “equivalence” debate, I’d just mention that for street photography, I’m usually fighting for more DOF rather than less, so the fact that an APS-C sensor will yield more DOF for a given field of view and aperture is a pro rather than a con from my point of view (again, for street photography). I shoot both Fuji (multiple bodies) and Sony (A9), and would urge the original poster to consider whether full-frame is necessarily a benefit for his smaller street/travel setup. Sony certainly has better autofocus, but APS-C has real benefits for street use (including lens size, in addition to greater DOF). Sony (or Nikon) APS-C would also be an option, of course, but in the APS-C world, Fuji has by far the most extensive lens lineup.
