Try with just the SD card. If that works you likely have the same issue I had.

In my case I switched to a Delkin CFE card and had no issues. Since the two Lexar CFE cards that were causing the freezes were less than one year old I emailed them. The traded me for two new cards. They have also been working perfectly under heavy use. Great service from Lexar.

Interestingly, the replacement Lexar CFE cards have the exact same model numbers as the problem cards had. Visually identical, but no issues using them. So, in the end I don't really

Thanks for the suggestion. After I posted my comment, I found on another forum where someone had the exact same problem as I did. Turns out it is a bug in the firmware with one of the joystick settings. When I updated, it ported over my settings in which I had set the joystick to AF-On and Hold. According to the discussion on the other forum (Post #17 here: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/426290-firmware-40-bugs/), the Hold option is what is causing the problem. I have temporarily set my joystick to AF-L and used both Hold and Click for testing and the issue did not happen. Tomorrow, I will go back and try AF-On with Click to make sure the problem does not recur.

While that is not optimal, as I prefer to use the joystick for BBF by holding it, I can get used to the click option if that is what is required until they fix the issue, if they do.

All of that said, I will also go back and try the AF-On and Hold using only the SD card and see if the problem persists. That will be an interesting experiment. If the problem is not present, then it seems they might have more than one conflict in the firmware that needs to be sorted out. Will post back after I test it out.

This morning I did a little more testing with the joystick options as well as using only the SD card. The issue that I was having was repeatable when setting the joystick to AF-On and Hold. Switching to Click and/or another AF-L option did not cause the semi-freeze.

I also took the CFE card out and tried the test again only using the SD card. The problem still occurred with the joystick set to AF-On and Hold, but did not occur with other joystick AF options, which is consistent with what I saw when the CFE card was used.

So, it does appear to be a firmware bug in version 4 when the joystick is set to AF-L and Hold.

This is not optimal for those of us who like to us BB AF by holding the joystick down. Until they fix the problem, if they do, I have my joystick now set to AF-L and will just use the shutter button instead of the joystick for AF for moving subjects.

Glad you sorted your issue out. I am not a BBF user so definitely a different issue than mine was. Unfortunate if it keeps you from shooting with your prefered workflow. Hopefully, Leica will fix the issue now that it has been reported.

Agreed - while using BBF is my preferred way to shoot, that is primarily for moving subjects and I opt to use my Sony gear for wildlife when that is the primary focus of a trip or outing. I wanted to have that option available on the SL3 for times when that is what I have with me and want to shoot animals or birds, which will be the case for a small part of a trip that I have planned for this coming fall. It won't be a huge deal to just use the shutter button for AF instead. Hopefully, Leica will indeed fix the problem.
