There are so many great improvements in the SL3 firmware 4.0 upgrade that it really expands how useful the system can be in a variety of shooting environments. However,, the more I shoot with it the more unexplained behaviours I am encountering.
Since the upgrade about 1 out of 10 times I turn the camera on I get a new error message that says the CF card is full. This happens with multiple cards whether it is empty and freshly formatted in camera, or has a few images on it. The screen has the option to click "OK". When I do, the camera finishes start up and runs. This makes me uneasy about shooting to any CF card.
The camera has also begun freezing at random times. Often after a a shot has been made and is being saved to the card. The only way to unfreeze the camera is to remove the battery.
I did an experiment where I removed the CF card and only shot to the SD card. I have not had either of the above errors in this configuration. This leads me to believe that the new software has introduced errors into some level of the CF card management software.
I really would like to get to the bottom of this.
Anyone else having issues with Firmware 4.0 since upgrading? Please include any camera SL3, SL3-S, Q3 28, Q3 43, Q3 Mono.

Looks like Leica's approach to software and even product development: "why should we test? The user who paid a lot will do it for us".
After the camera took a coffee whilst starting of course.
I just ran a test I am getting frequent error messages and freezes any time I have a CFexpress card in the camera. No errors with SD card only. Both my CFexprss cards are identical Lexar Professional Silver 256 gb and formatted in camera. I wish I had a different Brand CFexpress card to see if the errors are an incompatibility with this specific brand/version. They ran perfectly for more than a year prior to the upgrade.

This reminds me of the problem we had with various digital M and their sensitivity to SD card brands, speed, etc.
Did you report it to Leica?

I have not experienced anything like this with my SL3 and v4.0. FWIW I use a 1TB Atlas Ultra OWC CFexpress Type B, 4.0 card but haven't tried any other CFexpress cards/brands.
Long shot, but have you tried resetting the camera since the firmware update?

Yes, I did a full reset. The card full error persists.

I am using multiple cards, and i don't get the error.
Sounds like the camera is doing a check now, and the card is not responding.
I would move on to a different card; at the end, it can be the controller on the card
Yes, I am headed to Milan later this week and plan to buy a different brand card to try.
The problem is more serious than I originally thought. Today I had two instances of errors writing to the card. I lost two, thankfully only testing images. Both times after the error the camera was completely frozen. But clearly I cannot shoot using my CFEXPRESS Cards at the present time. I hope a different card solves the issue.

Are you using "Content Credentials" ... on or off
I seem to recall reading elsewhere that some folks were having issues with CC being a bit of a bug for them on one of the other Q / SL bodies. Sounded similar to what you've been describing.
Might try cycling / resetting that and see if it has any impact. Maybe the card being used doesn't have the compatibility with CC (vs. camera in general).

I don't believe that the SL3 supports Content Credentials. But the SL3-S does. Correct me if I am wrong on this please.

Thanks me too.
In the meantime I have a perfectly functioning system using my SD cards. So not a pressing crisis. Really just a lack of redundancy for stills shooting. If I was shooting video I would be surfing a huge loss of speed and capacity.
Update on my issue. I bought a new Delkin CFExpress card to try on my SL3. I have only used it for one day. But so far no issues and very fast performance. So, it appears the camera is fine and there is a problem with the Lexar cards and my SL3. I have written support at Lexar to get their comments on how to proceed. I had standardized on Lexar for the last few years. I would like to continue that as I have many of their cards SD and CFExpress. Never had a problem before.
Well - I am having a problem with one of my two SL3 bodies semi-freezing after the update to firmware v4. I only updated a couple of hours ago, so the info that I have may not be complete. The semi-freeze happens after burst shooting. I can still shoot, but the buttons on the back of the camera become unresponsive. This happens with both Sony and Angelbird CFE cards. The camera has to be turned off and then back on again to resume normal functioning. Have not yet tested on just SD cards, but in any event, the issue needs to be solved.
The other SL3 body that I have is not showing the same problem and I tried both cards in it as well. I also went through some of the other settings that I was using on the other body to see if they cause any issue (AF-C, tracking, etc) and they did not.

Try with just the SD card. If that works you likely have the same issue I had.
In my case I switched to a Delkin CFE card and had no issues. Since the two Lexar CFE cards that were causing the freezes were less than one year old I emailed them. The traded me for two new cards. They have also been working perfectly under heavy use. Great service from Lexar.
Interestingly, the replacement Lexar CFE cards have the exact same model numbers as the problem cards had. Visually identical, but no issues using them. So, in the end I don't really know what about the first two cards was causing the problems or how to avoid them.
Glad to hear it resolved. Sometimes you can do a PC side full format in fat32 or exfat [not quick format] of the card, reinitialize the camera, and make sure the battery is out and drained before restarting it. Then format again in camera.
Oddly enough I got the card is full Message on an older M when the cards been working perfectly for a long time so it might be failing.
