p.1 #1 · New Canon R5, mk2, doesn't turn on without a lens attached

My friend just received a new Canon R5, mk2 and they didn't send the adapter so he could mount his EF lenses.
The camera won't turn on. I've never seen a camera that had to have a lens on it to turn on.
Any helpful replies would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If he can't mount a lens, how does he know that mounting one would fix the issue?

A few years back my 90D came with a discharged battery and wouldn't fire up the camera until it was charged for a couple hours.

He attached the grip (I didn’t know he didn’t try the camera without the grip).
He removed the grip, reattached the battery door with battery in and the camera now turns on.
Now he’ll need to try the grip again.

This is from memory, but I seem to recall post somewhere that if the grip only has one battery it needs to be in a particular battery location (maybe slot 1).

Everything works now.
I think while his L battery was charging he was using his non-L batteries from his 5D

He should read page 22 of the manual.

There are multiple versions of the LP-E6 battery that the R5II uses, going back to the original 5D series, etc. The first version, the LP-E6, is incompatible with the R5II. The next two versions, LP-E6N will power the camera but have certain limitations.

If he is coming directly from a recent 5D version, I would recommend he buy a few of the latest 'P' version to achieve full compatibility. Also, from my experience, the third party NH batteries that I used without problem in other cameras were rejected by the R5II. It would turn on but immediately show an error message and not function.

Basically most of these cameras (regardless of brand) use 2 li ion batteries like they did 20+ years ago. They ask about lot more of the batteries though.

Both the LP-E6 and Sony NP-FZ100 battery listed at 7.2V. BP-511 has 2 li ion batteries, too

Always tell your friend to read the manual to learn how to work the camera before complaining it does not work.

Yes, I had him download the manual while he was waiting for the delivery 🚚
