Very interesting photographer website Todd. Thanks for the input
Hi Robert - after searching for some kind of top loader to use with my Z9/180-600 combo without success, found the carrier that Todd referenced and bought one while on sale. It does work pretty well for my combo, and even though I was initially apprehensive about how secure it was, turns out it was fine.
My only nitpick is that it is just a bit slow for me to get the gear out quickly into a shooting position. Not sure if it's the carrier, or just me. Other than that it does work very well. Another option is the Cotton Carrier which I also use on occasion.

If you can find a shoulder bag to put it in, the Shimoda X25 RST core unit is the perfect size for a Z8 + 160-800, and some other goodies - binoculars, strap, etc.
I use it with a Mystery Ranch Scree 33 and those Y shaped front zippers make it a breeze to get in and out of. You can usually find the Scree on deep discounts, particularly for older models. The Coulee is similar.
I can also strongly recommend the Leofoto replacement collar for the 180-600, has a very nice soft pad that makes carrying the thing a breeze.

i'm assuming the think tank digital holster 150 v3 is something you looked at? it says 16.5" exterior/15" interior depth and designed for gripped body with 150-600 lens attached, but it's probably cutting it too close. if it almost fit but was just slightly too short to zip shut i would talk to a local tailor/seamstress about modifying it to fit like a zip-in or sewn in extension of fabric. something even simpler like a bungee with clip or carabiner attached to the lid and a loop of cord to hook it on attached to the holster would give you some added security (not that gravity is likely to tip a 16" long camera up and out of an unzipped 15" holster). i don't carry lenses this long so i am just spitballing and would definitely look for a more precise fit on a smaller lens, but i get the appeal of a holster and if that's the best you can do for a lens that long it would still probably work just fine

I have the Think Tank Digital Holster 150, and can verify that the Z8 with Nikon Z 180-600mm lens fits well. This is the exact combo I bought the holster for.
This said, I do often add the Nikon 1.4x teleconverter to this lens; the with-teleconverter combo fits, but is tighter than I'd like. So I've indeed been thinking of having someone add a small extension to the Think Tank holster.
