p.1 #1 · Your current gear thoughts (we all have GAS)

There really isn't a place for this right now, maybe this is a welcome addition, maybe it will quickly be 20 pages deep! Did you just get a new piece of gear? Do you have appreciation for something specific? Is there something you haven't used in a while that reminded you why you have it? Do you want to change things up or downsize? Here is a place for that!

I will start:

I just purchased an A6500 for recording videos for my classes (I teach 2 classes per semester online) and it also is my first camera with modern autofocus (my gear has been Rebel XT --> NEX-5 --> Sony A7II + NEX-3N + A6500). My goodness autofocus is fast now! I love the process of MF so I will probably not use AF that much in my photography, but sometimes it is really useful and/or needed and I finally have something that is quite fast in acquiring focus. I am very excited!

I might sell some of my least used gear such as 20G. 20mm is too wide and 24 GM has somehow much more pleasing rendering.

Downgrading 24-70 GMII to smaller std zoom has been in my mind. Maybe not after all... I wish 24-50G price would come down a little.

Too much gear. Gonna use most of it in the next few months and then cull what I don’t want/need.

No Sony anywhere to be seen, though.

Going on a trip to S America soon for birding
Some feeders call for a shorter focal so I'm looking to get a 70-200mm F4 macro II since it fits the bill well (small and light)
Macro also allows for insects shots
Anyone want to rid of theirs?

I picked up an A1 a few months ago with a view to it being a one size fits all as I wanted to get back into airshow photography in addition to my usual landscape/cityscape shoots.

Waiting on rumours of a 100-400 replacement, or will just pick up a used 100-400 or 200-600 when I see a good deal.

Yet to decide which of my bodies to let go of as i still have A7r3 and A7r4

Most recent thinking about gear acquisition has unvolved Panasonic Leica 35-100mm F2.8 and Fujinone GF55mm F1.7, to complement my micro-four-thirds OM-1 II and large (medium?) format GFX100S II kits. On the Sony side, the existing A1 and a collection of Sony and Tamron lenses haven't seen much use in the last 1.5 years. I think this reflects my changing photography interests, and shouldn't be taken as a negative perspective on Sony or full-frame systems in general.

I need to sell the Sigma 24 and 65.I just don't use them. Possibly the 45 too because the TTArtisan 40mm f2 is smaller and lighter and brighter and not too bad. I have the 20-70 that also gets little to no use... I am waiting for a 28mm that is small and works well on the Sonys...

But I think the worst thing I did was to buy the fujifilm X-E5. I thought it and the voigtlander 27 f2 would be like a poor man's Leica and I could use it whenever I went for walks and had time to make pictures. The Voigtlander is already on the way back to B&H - it was very decentered, and I had a hard time focusing, especially on infinity (?!). Now I have no lens for the camera - I am waiting for the viltrox 25mm f1.7. Did I say I also returned the TTArtisans 27mm f2.8 because I was not happy with my copy? And the other day I had the X-E5 with a Nikon 50mm f1.8 E attached on next to my A7CR with the Sigma 45, and they are not all that different in size (size being one of the reasons I am trying Fuji - again).

And so it goes...

Preparing to move out my Sony gear and go back to M43. As I get older, I'm finding size and weight matter more than it used to, and I've had a long relationship with M43 that I've enjoyed.

I would actually love feedback on my current set-up and my next lens. I picked up an A1 and an 85GMii 1.4 for sports a few months ago. With a one lens setup I've been really happy with the results and have gotten good pictures for all types of sports (volleyball, basketball, soccer, hockey).

I've been thinking of getting either a 35gm or 24gm for the wide end, but I cannot decide. 24GM is older with no XD linear motors. 35 for pretty sharp but I don't hear a lot of recommendations for it (same goes for 24, but I've had more recommendations from colleagues about the 24).

I've also been contemplating a 300GM down the line but that is not going to happen for a few years unless I somehow win the lottery.

I've also been pretty tempted by the 200 f/2 from Sigma but the 15fps limit is annoying. Same goes for the 135 f/1.4. Another crazy thought I had was to get a 50 1.4 or 1.2...they seem to perform very well, but are they too close to the 85?

tl:dr, A1 + 85GMii; next wide option 24, 35, or 50; long end, sigma 200f/2 or 300gm 2.8

Yes, a 50 is too close to the 85, I think. The 35 would give you a nearly 50 in crop.
I never bonded with a 24... too wide for people. It depends on how you want to use it, of course.

So, get the 35.

I currently have a desire to downsize many of my primes, excepts few that are ideal for portraits/low light and get the 50-150. Just finding myself opting for the convenience of a zoom if I’m out And about without a particular photographic project in mind. When I have a project I know the gear I need and I don’t mind the weight. And the extra stop of light and background separation over the 70-200 gm ii in my most used 50-150 range, will be most welcome.

Also realizing that I don’t like wide angle all that much so I’m selling all my ultra wide angle lenses including the amazing 12-24 gm. Hoping to eventually get the money from gear to get the new lens, I can’t really afford it otherwise. Wish the damn tariffs hadn’t jacked up the price…

I sold all my lenses 10mm, 24m GM, 50mm GM (poor condition), 135mm GM (poor condition) and 100-400mm GM to fund a new kit. I'm a prime lens guy and I've always been curious about the 35mm. So I got a Sigma 35mm f/1.2ii and a Sigma 200 f/2.0 and now I'm seeking an ultra wide Sigma as my next lens and possibly a super telephoto GM prime.

I love M4/3. It is so impressive how much performance you can get from those tiny lenses.

I am extremely happy with my GM primes: 24, 35, 50 and 85mm. TBH I cannot believe how lucky I am to have access to such lenses and honestly feel sorry for users of other brands.

But then... GAS shows up, and I am in the process of constructing a similar line, but with manual focus. My rationalization is that they're going to be lighter and smaller. And while it's true, of course it's just a mental trick I use on myself to open my wallet.

So I ended up with a line of Voigtlanders: 21 Nokton, 35 APO, 50 APO, and 75 Nokton. The jump between 21 and 35 is uncomfortable, I'd prefer to swap the 21 with 24 (which Voigtlander doesn't offer) or 35 with 28 (not yet available).

That said, I feel extremely lucky that my photographic interests are bound by the focal length. Having zero interest in looking at photos taken with lenses wider than 20 and longer than 135, makes my "GAS exposure surface area" more manageable.

It's not new - I got it in December of 2024 - but after a year of using my Sigma 70-200/2.8 I'm still really pleased with it. Killer lens, sharp everywhere at every aperture. Built like a proper tank. Heavy, yes, but I'm not particularly weight sensitive. If you don't have the money for the GMII, and I don't, it's a really great alternative. I got mine on sale for $1900 CDN ($1400USD or 1200 Euro) vs. $3500 CDN for the Sony.

As for appreciation - hadn't had my Sigma 85/1.4 or Sony 100STF on my camera in a while and just did some portraits with both of them and wow, forgot how good they both were. So different, but so good. The STF is a marvel.

I always have my X100V with me, but my nephew recently inherited my dad's, so the two of us went out shooting. So fun to watch him really explore photography with the camera. Such a capable little beast.

I don't need to downsize - but I do, uh, 'need' an AF prime longer than 20mm but shorter than 45mm...so looking at a 35 or 24. I also really feel the age of my A7RII now - I will buy the next R when it comes out.

I am toying with the idea of selling my Nikon Z8, 600mm PF and 24-120 f4. I just wish Sony had something I wanted to buy.

I currently have an A1 and A1 II. If I sold the Nikon stuff to upgrade the A1 to a second A1 II I'm sure that they would announce the A1 III a week later. So, that won't happen

If they would only make a 500mm F4 or a replacement for the 24-105 that was as good as the Nikon Z24-120mm I would be all in on Sony.

The 100 macro is the only lens to have any whiffs of GAS for me. The CV110 is great, but tbh trying to do 1:1 macro on live moving bugs is an exercise in frustration, My keeper rate is measured in fractions of a percent.

I need a decent heavy tripod more so, It's ridiculous have the 600GM with only a monopod/gimbal. But analysis/paralysis and having a reduced toy budget has stymied me
