p.3 #13 · Your current gear thoughts (we all have GAS) | |
This year I had massive gear changes, I have to admit it's beyond sanity.
I had A7RIVa with 20G, 35GM, 50 1.2GM (21 3.5, 65 APO). I slowly upgraded my gear that level, but after more than a year shooting with that "complete" setup I felt more like a professional than a enthusiast amateur, the size and lugging around my setup. I wanted a more sophisticated and simple camera, and a lot of options came through in my mind.
One of my most desired camera was Leica Q3 (43), but felt overpriced and worried about the poor AF-C (for shooting my kids). RX1RII was outdated (no news about the successor), especially in terms of AF, has bad ergonomic and poor battery life. I decided to looking forward an A7CR in the end because of the closest Sony camera design to Leica Q and I can use my E-mount lenses, the larger ones with additional grip and get a small 40 2.5G as a walk around compact setup. I listed my camera, but the only deal came up after weeks a barely used A7RV, so I traded my RM4a with GRIIIx. The reason I wanted to try new AF, EVF and it's an easier to sell camera later.
Several months passed, used my RV with satisfaction but no enjoyment. Then Sigma BF and GFX100RF appeared on April. I had serious GAS and my mind has broken. BF was really tempting because of the minimalism, also GFX100RF because of the old style RF design I was always in love, and it has MF sensor. Watched lot of videos, impressions for a month, also considered Q3 again. I made the hardest camera purchase decision and bought GFX100RF, and listed my Sony gear for financing Fuji (refill my savings after purchase)
I used only two days the GFX, and was quite hesitant. I have no serious issues with the camera, just didn't feel it can justifies the extreme high price (for me it's an insane lot of money). I decided to send it back, however the store insisted to inspect the camera before refund and it took almost two weeks because of holidays. On that two weeks I used my A7RV however it was already listed to sell. I got really missed the GFX100RF as a camera, also the images of MF has kind of magic that lacks in Sony. The store messaged me they can accept it as a used camera since I made 200-300 shots, for 15% restock fee. So I decided to keep it because it's a significant loss, and later I can sell it on second hand market if I don't like it all. And have no regrets, I made more than 20.000 shots (I've never shot bursts), the far most used camera I've ever had, I've got really enjoy GFX100RF.
I sold A7RV, 20 1.8G, 50 1.2GM, kept 35GM, 21 3.5, 65 APO because those are special lenses for me, and get a barely used A7III for very good price, so I've never quit my Sony at the end (who can?).
For autumn I built up some funds, and A7CR has a really good grey market price. I sold A7III and finally bought the CR since I've had desire since the release. It had quite small usage beside the Fuji for two months, and decided to part with it. The reason was the flippy and low resolution screen (also missed joystick for MF but not mayor issue).
So ended up buying a grey market A7RIVa after sold CR with a small loss. I closed the circle, I realised this is the least expensive Sony camera with high quality displays (tilting is a must for me) and good AF.
Some additions: I also bought a quite cheap used Canon M6mkii with 32 1.4 and 22 f2. I also love this camera, wanted also to replace my Sony with 32 1.4 for more separation than 100RF, and with 22 F2 it's a great jacket pocketable camera. Paired with 22 F2 I can understand precisely the RX1RIII existence. No, CR is not an alternative, after M6II+22F2 size and weight (as similar to RX1RIII) a cannot rationalise CR anymore as an alternative. I'm glad Sony made it with only fixed screen so I haven't got serious desire.
So many interesting cameras, if I have unlimited funds I'd collect Leica Q's, RX1RIII, X2DII, Sigma BF. I love shooting, composing also I can't deny my passion towards gear, at least have some experience with most of my desired camera.
