Hi all, anyone else encountered this issue on any of their R mount cameras?
For the last few months my EOS R’s top dial ‘skips’ when in use. When I turn it left or right the shutter speed only changes after a few turns and sometimes it even changes to the opposite setting that I’m turning for. (Eg. Shutter speed decreases when I’m turning it right to increase). It doesn’t work on every turn like it’s supposed to. The wheel seems to be malfunctioning in the menus as well.
Anyone encountered this before? And what was the fix? Hoping I can avoid any big repair bills atm.

If you are asking if that is a normal/expected behavior, then I think the answer is no. I have not experienced that on any of my cameras, mirrorless or DSLR.
However, the reason I am commenting is that I recently almost purchased a used 6D Mark II (out of some sense of nostalgia), but I returned it in part because the front dial was exhibiting the exact behavior you describe.
I suspect this is a mechanical problem, probably is due to a dirty contact or stress in a connector. I doubt there is a fix other than a physical repair.

My 5D Mk IV body has this exact issue. A physical repair is almost certainly the only solution. I need to figure out if that repair is worth it for that camera. It was my backup body, but now is a third body as I have two R5s as primary/secondary. Not sure what the repair would cost, but I'm guessing a couple hundred bucks, plus shipping?

Had it on my 6d, after the camera had been exposed to a foggy and cold environment for a couple of days. Very few buttons kept working. I removed the battery, SD card, left all the doors open and placed the camera near a heating source. It was fine after a few days.

Seems like a problem some people have had over the years after doing some research. Some people recommended using 100% isopropanol inside the top dial which seems to have worked for them.

Yeah I'm hoping i can avoid any major phyrical repair costs atm as money is tight. So maybe i'll just use it as is for now.

Seems like the repair cost would be a few hundred at least. Not sure if it's worth paying that much if the camera itself isn't really new. I might try a DIY solution or something. Some have suggested using a couple of drops of 100% isopropanol inside the top dial which seems to have worked for them

The main dial has no click stops but is prone to finger sweat and goo. I removed the top body panel on several cameras and cleaned the corroded electrical contacts with contact cleaner (DeoxIT) on a q-tip and it worked like new again. I wouldn't recommend spraying or dumping alcohol inside the camera.
Last year when I had my R7 repaired the standard minimum charge was $375 plus tax, so a switch repair is likely to be over $400.

I was about to suggest that. Back in the day some older DSLR bodies would develop intermittent issues with the shutter button (sweat/dust ingress), and isopropanol was often successful in at least delaying the need for professional attention.

I remember one of my bodies (20D, 40D?) had a front dial (index finger) which acted like that. I remember spraying compressed air into the gap, which at the time felt better than a liquid. I'm not sure if that's true, but it did fix it.

Canon had a run of cameras from the late 2010s that had dial/switch issues. The M6 II for example, and the 5D IV. I have both, and both have dials that misbehave. I'm not sure they're worth fixing, at the current repair cost. So I just deal, and mutter under my breath every time I turn my M6 II to portrait mode and it goes wild (random dial inputs).

They won't replace just the switch/wheel. They will replace the entire body panel that contains the defective part. Yeah, I'd guess it would be at least a few hundred $.

I have resolved this problem a couple of times by using Contact Cleaner applied under the dial.
