This past week I had the pleasure of photographing a dance company, Wade, at a theatre in midtown NYC. As I was in the lobby waiting to enter the theatre, I struck up a conversation with the young lady selling candy and refreshments. I explained what I was doing there and asked if I could warm up my camera by taking her portrait. She was flattered and said of course.

No, she has a physical deformity. I didn't bring it up in the conversation, and she didn't try to hide it when I asked her to pose for me. As you can see, she has her sleeve rolled up. She had a British accent so I asked where she was from. She named a town in southern England which I didn't recognize where she had grown up. She then told me that her mother was originally from New Jersey. At that point, I was told I could enter the theatre and I thanked her and went on my way.
In retrospect, I think it quite mature of her that she reveals her physical abnormality to strangers rather than trying to hide it. I have a great deal of respect for that.
