p.1 #1 · CV 40mm f2 Ultron SL-II - is something wrong with mine?

Ever since I got this lens, I've felt like something isn't quite right with the images.

A bit cruddy, lacking a bit in transparency - but we've also had pretty bad light since I got it (and had free time).

When I look online, sometimes I can see it in other peoples photos but I'm not entirely certain, it's subtle.

I wanted the smaller version so had to pick it up used, it's the sl-II n. And it seemed in mint condition.

I was wondering if it was something wrong with my copy, or it's just the way the lens renders and thought to ask here as I know it's quite popular for the compact size, focal length and general build.

Though it's usually build that I hear praise for, rather than the image quality - except for sharpness.
Figured asking would save me some effort and money in hunting down another copy, rather difficult to find in this size, and I want to keep it small to pair with the fm2n. But all the testing is done on a digital Sony a7cii (perhaps that has something to do with it too.

When I look at the rear of the lens glass, it looks fine. But if I tilt it a certain angle I see this:

I'm not sure if it's glue separation, or just how it is but thought to mention it.

I did a basic decentering test and I think it seems reasonable for F2 (wide-open):

But the images feel off:

^ safe to ignore the contrast differences on the fence sides

f2:

^ Last two shots I don't see the issue with as much, especially the doggo one, but I have wide open portraits where you can see the cruddyness/lack of transparency easily so I don't think it's the aperture... though they were both taken outside - and unfortunately no permission to share with those.

I compared it side-by-side with the CV 40mm f1.2 nokton (e-mount) to rule out the light, and when I white balanced on the same point, it did reduce the yellow tint on the ultron by 50 and give it +5 magenta which may have helped somewhat.

Both comparisons below are at f4, white balanced on the same point, and lens corrections on.

↓ Nokton
- focus is on the middle fence post

↓ Ultron

With the fence scene, the focus is on the middle post. When you look at the branches going up on the garage roof behind it, you can see how much sharper it is on the nokton. And it's the same on the other side. I know it's not in the plane of focus but on the nokton it's sharper both infront and behind so it's not field curvature either, I think? It's like astigmatism?

↓ Nokton
- focus is on the plant pots.

↓ Ultron

Notice the dirt in front of the front-most brown plant pot on the floor and how much more grimey it is on the ultron.
The hanging lantern just above the front plants compared to how it appears more unsettling with the ultron image.

Anyway, would appreciate your thoughts on this if you have any ideas, it has been bugging me. Was hoping to use this as my walkabout film camera+lens combo but just something(s) not sitting right with me and I can't put my finger on it. I suspect either mine is bad or perhaps it's the result of making it so compact. Feels like the glass isn't quite premium quality ... or just something. I don't see it with my other lenses, even the TTA 40mm f2 which is a fraction of the cost, has af and is very compact. There is something else weird with that lens (maybe SA) but it's a nice effect.
And it's less obvious in some images with the ultron and I understand it's subtle (in the examples shown and with all the corrections) but something feels not quite right there and it's off-putting.

My initial thought was there might be haze inside, though I couldn't see a thing, because the images felt less transparent but I don't think it's that. And I think the distortion, central hotspot wide-open, vignette, the light, white balance were adding it to it, but even after removing/accounting for all that, something else is there. A bit muddy and grimey with something unpleasant about the out-of-focus.

If this is just typical for the lens, does anyone know if the 28mm f2 ultron, 35mm f1.7 ultron, 28mm f2.8 color-skopar, or 58mm f1.4 Nokton render similarly?

I’m not sure what you mean by Transparancy, but strikes me you don’t care for the rendering of the Ultron as it has variances with oof, transition zones, contrast and micro contrast. I will say I’ve seen different rendering and DoF for similar apertures across different lens designs which might also account for some of the differences in transition zone appearance. Otherwise the old Ultron is find sharpness wise but it’s not a modern lens or design and apparently lacks some of what you hope for (but makes up for it in compactness - or not).

You’ve ruled out centering, if you shine a flashlight through it and don’t see massive haze etc then there ins’t anything wrong with the lens, it just isn’t for you (let me know what you want for it, I love them).

I can see what's bothering you too. I think it's a ton of astigmatism in the bokeh transition zones, but I think confirming that would require dedicated tests. Certainly the Ultron bokeh is not pretty here.

I also don't know if that's sample variation or just the limitations of a compact, older design.

Thank you both. I think youre right about it possibly being due to an older design. I don't think it's transparency from haze or decentering, but the astigmatism in the even slightly out of focus areas perhaps.

Thing is I compared the distagon 35mm f1.4 ZM (also on the sony) at the same time, and I can see some (less) of that astigmatism too, but I feel very differently about that lens.

I've taken a look with a light previously and didn't see any haze, though I'm not that familiar with haze and probably wouldn't be able to spot subtle ones.

I was looking at the sample images on lenstip for it and I think I see a similar thing as I had in the comparison shots in those images too, the thing that gives it a feeling of haze in the air:

eg this shot at f4:

f2.8:

Looking through my other f2.8 and f4 test shots, I think mine might even be better in that regard, who knows though.
I don't see the crunch/grime there that I see in mine. Maybe the lighting was actually warping my perception a little on the crunch, together with the other characteristics of the lens, because in the comparison shots they're not that far off other than the astigmatism (?).

I'll see how it performs on film. I'm brand new to film photography but I worry it will make the images look even more retro than I was hoping for in an everyday go-to lens.
I think I can see it helping with some more artistic shots browsing through lomography, but that's above my skill level and not what I'm looking for currently, but I'll find out. Maybe it's not apparent at all.

My first roll came back pretty low quality so it's hard to judge currently. Got an Essential Film Holder and light on the way to try and scan them myself, then I'll use some more of the precious film with this lens. Already spent half the next roll just making sure my mirror isn't out of whack shooting a test chart after many came back a bit too blurry

I could let you know if I'm going to sell it, AdaptedLenses, but you're probably better off trying to pick it up locally. I'd try to recover my cost - I already imported it to the UK from Japan and it wasn't exactly a hot deal to begin with.
Brand new with a box wasn't much more after the import fees on mine ... but that is quite a bit bigger from a comparison video I saw on youtube and why I went for this.
There's quite a few different versions, I like the build of mine, metal, knurled and small but I do see a few without the knurling available. Though maybe a little bigger wouldn't be so bad as the focus ring did feel a little narrow when I first got it. Now I'm more used to it and it does suit the fm2n really well.

I'm not really sure what to replace it with either for a more normal focal length (shorter than 50mm, greater than 28mm) in compact form, and at least f2 for nikon f mount so if I'm not liking it on film either I guess I'll make do with a 50mm f1.4 for now, possibly adding the 28 ai-s but it's f2.8 and might be hard to focus.
Perhaps skipping the 28 and just later swapping to a different mount altogether, which would be a shame as I really like the fm2n ... other than it almost poking my right eye with the advancer (that acts like an on/off lock) when looking with my left eye.

Let's see though, maybe it will be fine on film.

Anyway, thanks all, and also if anyone wants to chime in, please feel free.
