Here is a shot using the C50. Of course I used my favorite model. I did not have much time with it but so far it seems very nice.

XLR audio jacks in an under $4K camera - nice!

The Canon PZ-E2B Power Zoom Adapter is no doubt a lot of fun with this setup!

Thank you, I did the math quick but I believe it would be in the $9000.00 range for what is pictured.

I have used it a bit more now and I must say I am a fan of this 32mb sensor, I hope it finds it finds its way into the R1. I really like the look of it. The Cinema side of things I also like the look over the R1 video, more cinema feel to it. The colors look really nice.

If you never used the Cinema side of the things, the menu system is very different and will take a little time to get some understanding. If you at least done some video that will help but still a bit different than the photo side of things. If you already used a R5C, C80 etc, no problem.

I love the top handle, much better than the SmallRig and Tilta handles I use with the R1. The built in record button and zoom rocker is very nice. Having the XLR ports also is a bonus. The negative to the handle is using the Mic holder with a monitor in the hot shoe does not work together. Canon really should have thought about that a little more.

I find the screen a bit small for my uses seeing it does not have an EVF. I feel an external monitor is much better, more so on the photo side of things. I find the font and size much harder to read on the video menu vs the photo menu.

I think most will be surprised by the weight, it is very light. It seems like it should be heavier. Overall it seems well built. Maybe not as weather friendly as the R1 but to be expected.

The battery on the photo side seems to hold up well, the video side does drain a bit fast but I did a little over an hour strait video in 4k not raw and the battery held up. I do have a battery grip from the R5 II which fits but I did not test that.

If you own or are thinking you want the Canon PZ-E2B Power Zoom Adapter, this works very well with the C50. Having the top handle rocker and the rocker on the C50 itself works very well. Much better reaching for the buttons on the unit itself.

As some of you may have seen, I am getting an ERR 70 code but only with my RF 400mm. I feel it is only an issue with this combo not the Camera itself. That is being looked into a bit more. As of now everything else has preformed as it should.

This camera does have a digital zoom but it only works in JPEG vs Raw if this is a feature you are interested in.

The Canon wireless remote works only on the photo side not the video side of things. The video side of things uses the XC Protocol with your phone. I have used this in my home with not issues. All the controls are there, even the zoom rockers. You will need the correct Canon App for this.

This does not use the N3-type terminal either so your wired remotes most likely will not be compatible.

The C50 also does not come with any HDMI cable holder or any means to install one. You will need a cage for such things.

Personally I would not recommend this as a primary photo taking camera but I highly recommend it as a cinema camera that can taking outstanding photos if need be.

I will do my best to answer any questions you may have.

I’d appreciate opinion about the C50:

1. The EF superteles stabilization vs. RF lenses.
2. The LCD brightness vs. the R1 on a sunny day at the same LCD brightness level.
3. Is the font size on the video menus smaller than on the R1? This is a crucial issue.
4. Any battery issues in cold weather similar to the R52?

Also:

1. Can anyone using Gyroflow comment on its effectiveness vs. DaVinci built in stabilization?
2. Anyone can point to the lens profiles repository?

1. I only used one EF lens one it, my wife's EF 400mm f2.8 III, did not see any issues vs the RF IS lenses.

2. Brightness seemed the same to me outside. I did not compare side by side but nothing jumped out at me.

3. Font size is definitely smaller in the video menus vs the R1. The R1 menu size does not change from photo to video. The C50 does.

4. I have not used it in cold enough weather, personally the temps I have used the R5 II has never been an issue. So far the battery seems the same.

Thanks Rob, the font size & the older battery made the R5 C unusable for me. I hoped Canon would make the video menus bigger, like the R1 and offer a tilting LCD. Instead the LCD is smaller with no tilt. Otherwise it is a nice and very portable unit. Pity.

One more question for Rob. How would you rate the C50 AF speed of target acquisition, accuracy and tracking for smaller birds in relation to the other Canon hybrids?

On the photo side it seems just like the R5 II. On the video side I have not tracked much yet, but so far it seems very good at finding and holding on.

You need to adapt to just the screen, that overall feels slower. It is not and I find for me having the larger screen like the Atomos makes a big difference in finding the target.

Thanks Rob, I’ve been looking for a video “stroll & roll” video camera for wildlife, but so far, after looking and trying a few, I’m undecided. The external add-ons immediately make the rig cumbersome and kill portability. If my assumption is correct that the goal of the design was a small & light portable video camera then the absence of the IBIS, EVF and poor LCD is puzzling. The Sony A7 V looks more interesting despite many limitations and absence of the top handle with controls. I would move to Sony if they released a new and improved FX6 and offered a compact, light tele zoom.
If you get more experience with the C50, your comments will be appreciated.

I should have taken some photos but there's a guy at Lions games shooting stills with an R1 & 100-300 combo on a shorter than 1-foot high tripod. He frames via a ~7" external monitor attached to the hot shoe. It seems to work for him and I imagine the extra-low angle is interesting. I think it works at Lions games because it's indoor and he never has to deal with bright sunlight making the monitor difficult to see.

One downside of this approach might be that he's always looking down at the monitor and does not have good peripheral vision of the playing field, meaning there is some risk if the action suddenly approaches the sideline. I could also imagine that if he loses track of the ball among a throng of players, it's difficult to reacquire it without looking up. When using the EVF, you're already looking in the direction of the action and a quick glance over the EVF can be enough to reacquire the subject and then find it again in the EVF. There's less hand-eye coordination required.

Isn't the R6III basically a C50 with IBIS and EVF?

The R6 3 & C50 are different cameras for different market segments. Canon is awkwardly parroting Sony designs and always dropping the ball. Sony seems to better understand customer needs. BTW, Canon support couldn’t answer my queries about tyhe R1 custom settings and clammed up (((- : Maybe someday they’ll fix the mess? I’m starting to recommend Canon to my worst enemies.

Canon is doing what Canon can do to address the needs that they see in the market. Convergent evolution means that certain needs will then result in similar solutions; you can say that they're 'parroting' Sony, yet Sony doesn't have a comparable camera to the C50, nor does their newly-released A7 V have video feature parity with the R6 III.

VX4321 wrote:

This is... a bad joke. These companies are bull-headed and slow to respond to customer feedback. And Sony is not known for their 'user friendliness' and 'customer-oriented conduct', but rather, quite the opposite. See how long it took them to do simple things like fluid live view (on their mirrorless cameras!), claim massive dynamic range improvements then neglect to have anything but lossy raw output, and only now having a lossless raw function that mostly runs at full speed, several decades behind their competitors.

And that's just in photographic cameras. Don't get people started on their consumer electronics!

Since my comments were dismissed as a joke, let’s look at the facts and see where the joke really is—and who it’s on.
Below is a short list of major issues with Canon’s latest cameras:
1 Sensor resolution in flagship models

Canon offers 24 MP in its flagship, compared to Sony’s 50 MP. Both cameras are overpriced, but since sensor cost is a major price driver, the R1 should realistically cost about half of the A1 II.
2 Autofocus performance

It took Canon more than a decade to achieve competitive AF performance. This delay was a major factor in the shrinking Canon user base—a trend that continues today.
3 LCD design

Canon still lacks a tilting, non-reflective LCD across its lineup, despite this being a long-standing and widely requested feature—well before the R3 was released.
4 Declining ergonomics and usability

Canon’s once-class-leading ergonomics are deteriorating rapidly. The menu system is impenetrable, confusing, and poorly documented. The manual exceeds 1,200 pages, and even Canon support struggles to explain many functions. This is not a “molehill.” Jarred Polin—who likely uses this equipment as much as I do—addresses similar issues in his recent C50 review.
5 Power management and thermal design

Poor power efficiency and thermal design severely limit video runtime and drain batteries quickly. The LP-E19 in the R1 is no longer impressive, and smaller batteries perform poorly in low temperatures. For example, the R3 records 120 fps video at −7 °C for only about eight minutes before triggering a temperature warning.
6 Video ergonomics

When the R1 is fitted with a top handle, users are forced to operate it with their right hand, as there is no left-side Start/Stop video button.
7 Unnecessary image crop

There is an inexplicable and unnecessary 1.07× crop in 16:9 and FHD modes.
8 Video stabilization

In-camera stabilization is weak, and digital stabilization introduces a large crop and noticeable loss of image quality.
9 Video quality limitations

Video quality in 4K open-gate and APS-C modes is disappointing.

To fully appreciate these issues, one should also remember Canon’s recent history. The release of the R5 C is a prime example: a camera whose battery didn’t support its own features, with hard-to-read video menus, rapid thermal shutdown, and limited usable runtime.
Side notes
• “Fluid Live View” is important for tracking fast subjects, but it is not the most critical issue. If AF performance is poor, no display feature can compensate.
• The current “Fluid Live View” is essentially a smoothly animated slideshow. While it reduced complaints, the core issue—true real-time viewing in mirrorless systems—remains unresolved. This problem is now partially masked by pre-capture features recently adopted by Canon and Sony, despite Olympus having implemented them years ago.
• Dynamic range and lossy RAW have been popular online topics. In practice, modern cameras show no meaningful DR limitations, and lossy vs. lossless RAW is largely a theoretical concern.
• I cannot comment on Sony’s customer support, but based on my long experience with Canon service, support quality often depends on the individual representative.

Regarding claims of “slow response to feedback” and “Canon doing what they can”:
1 The M50 shipped in 2012 with poor AF. Release of the R3 made the AF competitive—roughly a decade later.
2 Lens selection is polarized: either extremely expensive, oversized, and heavy lenses, or slow f/8–f/11 “exotic” options aimed at casual users. Mid-range telephoto zooms are slow, extend while zooming, and are impossible to balance.
3 Not a single high-end Canon lens includes an Arca-Swiss compatible foot—a trivial feature requested for decades. Yet we are told Canon is “listening.”

None of this is meant as bashing—some of these problems are fixable, but I got tired of waiting and hoping.

Shrinking Canon user base? I guess you haven't looked at the numbers for 2024 (below) and 2025 seems to be on the rise for Canon from everything I've read.

Manufacturer Units Sold (Millions) Market Share (%)
Canon 3.53 43.2
Sony 2.33 28.5
Nikon 0.96 11.7
Fujifilm 0.74 9.0
Panasonic 0.28 3.4
OM Digital 0.16 1.9
Ricoh Imaging 0.07 0.8

Yeah, they're leaving in droves.
