So - My "kid" (20 something) has been on a travel kick with a handful of friends on their collective gap years and wanted to take a dSLR... so I gave him my old 7D & some kit lens I had in the cupboard that I'm not sure I've ever used... then he wanted longer (not wider oddly enough)... so his last couple of trips he had the 7D + 24-105L. Never blinked with that pair and he's got some great images - I'm kinda jealous I didn't have a camera like that when I was kicking around with uni friends back in the dark ages.
Never gave it a thought but on a whim saw the R100(body) for $250 at the Canon refurb sale and just jumped on one without any research (which is very odd for me). I grabbed a cheap 24-105 STM at KEH (their 25% sale), so I'm $500 bucks & tax into what is now an xmas present for the kid but it feels like a bargain.
As an excuse for confirming everything works ... you know I had to take them both for a spin. My expectations were low... This is not the top shelf stuff after all.
I gota tell ya... I'm just really impressed. I just cannot get over how small & usable this combo is (yeah I know a 24-105 is not RFs and the kits are far smaller). The 24-105 STM was a surprise - I played with it on the R6ii also and it's just nice to use, sharper than I would have expected and responsive (ok, it's f/7 at 100mm but still).
The R100 is obviously feature limited compared to an R6ii but it's exactly right for someone starting out, I mean hell I even really like it. The ergonomics are actually good even for my gorilla like hands and I keep picking it up in shock at the size.
Anyway, no actual content other than my surprise at how good the lower end model is but especially for that 24-105 STM
I have a love/hate relationship with the R100
The main dislike is canon disabled the function of the control ring on its NATIVE!!! Lens line up….i mean …. WTF😳
The lack of sensor cleaning on a fully exposed sensor is just pathetic…!! Even the lowly M series bodies had sensor cleaning!!
The body is just a tad too small , specifically the hand grip. I discovered Amazon sells the Neewer cage for the R50 that also perfectly fits the R100 too (I bought the R50 too) the cage adds a better grip and has fantastic ‘3 point fixing’ to the body… really is brilliant, both R100 and R50 are fitted permanently with the Neewer cages
Besides those annoying faults, then yes I agree it’s a great little camera.
My two are paired with RF 16, 28, 50 & 80 which in effect gives the FF equivalent of 25, 45, 80 & 135!! That’s a really neat travel / day kit to grab a few snaps. I also added a pair of the bloody brilliant EL-100 flash guns. The tiny size, 2cell and fantastic articulation are superb.
I just wish canon woukd release the M 22 & 32 in RF-s mount.
I didn't notice they disabled the control ring... I agree that is lame! The dust thing in this case is ok since he will just have that single lens while away at uni but at some point it will get some dust, beer, whatever .
I did stick the 28 on it and laugh a little. I've never looked at the latest flashes... still rocking my old 580v1's which I love... obviously not on this camera
Really one of the lightest cameras available. Interesting about the 24-105 most of the problems are in the corners it might not be so bad on aps and people have said its pretty good on FF. presumably especially if you are keeping iso not too terribly high, to make it easier fix vignetting
One of the few times (only?) I bought a bundle and didn't really research everything i was actually quite happy

Just a positive mismatch between my expectations and what I see and you're undoubtedly right that the STM is probably better on a crop body but it didn't look bad on a full frame body either and I really liked the handling of the R100 body with this lens. I suspect it's because I'm holding the lens so the small camera is not bothering me and I think when zooming I'm actually twisting the camera body not the lens (if that makes sense).
It's not a lens I would normally buy - I only had a inkling it existed from discussions - but it was a fit for this use case and the right price. I doubt most people are using this pairing either as most would be kits or primes.
Well don’t laugh..
I’ve just pulled the trigger on a used boxed Yungnuo 23mm 1.4 in RF mount (£99)
It’s supposedly AF??
I checked YouTube before buying and it seems ok… we’ll see. 🤞
The R100 is a good, basic, no frills, camera. It delivers. I bought mine, refurbished 2 years ago, sold the kit lens and my cost for the camera was around $160. I use it with my RF 600 & 800 f/11's. Btw, the hawk was about 400' away.

Ive been critical of the lens but if youre not going past iso 1600-6400 or so,and do a little cropping, you might not have any trouble correcting vignetting. Looking at the opticallimits test, the 24mm distortion is lower than much more expensive Sony 16-35/4 & 20-70, and center sharpness looks fine. If you're not doing landscape, might not have any issues on any corner sharpness.
The R100 is something like 12-13oz, lighter than most Fujis and right there vs XE line. Good luck finding a lighter camera
I found the 24-105 STM is awesome on the R50. I used it in a stadium with tens of thousands of people; I was concerned about bringing my better gear and had professional backup (graduation). I was really impressed. The 24-105 STM works really nicely on the R8, too.
Pixelpuffin, I am going to check out that Neewer cage!

The 24-105 STM is one of those lenses that gets a lot of crap online, but it's really a decent lens. I use my 24-240 more but when I want to carry less, I use the 24-105. It's also small enough to throw in the bag "just in case" when I'm shooting a long lens and want to be prepared for other opportunities. The IS combined with the R6's IBIS is amazing. I recently pulled off an unbraced 1 second exposure at 24mm with that combo. If your subjects aren't moving, or you want to show motion, the slow aperture can still work at night.
I got the R100 to free up my RP for timelapse. My intent was to use the "likely otherwise useless" R100 with my 800/11 with a solar filter to follow sunspots. But then there was the RF-S 10-18mm STM lens which I just had to try on the R100... It has done all I need as a light combo with the R10 and 100-400 since over a year now.
Today in a totally unexpected December sunshine(mid day 5° over the horizon), I took my new(ish) 15-30STM on the R8 for a first real test... and of course it is just about exactly the same angles of view as the R100 + 10-18, only much larger. Knowing how well the R100 generally does, I do not expect any drastic differences. Perhaps lifting shadows might be the one small benefit of a camera of twice the size.
When I started my DSLR days with the 450D + kit 18-55 in 2008, I found huge benefits with the L´s. But now "even" the R100 does remarkably well with the present low-end zooms, RF-S or RF. The gap to the R5´s with the best glass is far smaller now than almost 20 years ago. Lucky are the young and the newcomers!

Yes, when I started with Canon, I felt almost obligated to buy L lenses. I still have them since switching to mirrorless, but I've also added 3 non-L RF lenses. I no longer feel the need to spend a fortune to swap my EF L lenses for their RF L equivalents. Instead I'd rather spend money on RF lenses that don't exist in EF.

I tried most of the L´s, 24 to 400/5.6. Got a 24mmL as in Lemon, the Mk I. Hyi helvetti as the finns say. Then came the ZE´s! They still make me smile, warm and fuzzy. Especially my newest "just had to buy this one" Otus 100. Everyone should get one for their R100. A real treat, though somewhat front heavy.
I was impressed with the af of the R100, especially how it focused on the squirrel instead of the metal fence or the tall grass moving in the wind.
