p.1 #1 · Grand Canyon South Rim Water Restrictions and Lodging Closures

From the Grand Canyon National Park park service website:

"Grand Canyon National Park will implement additional water restrictions on the South Rim starting Saturday, December 6, due to a series of significant breaks in the 12½ mile-long Transcanyon Waterline that supplies water from the canyon for use in the park. Since mid-November, the park has faced challenges with water supply, and currently, no water is being pumped to the South Rim.

While the park remains open to visitors, the following measures will be enacted for the foreseeable future:

Overnight Guest Lodging: Effective Saturday, December 6, all park concessions will halt overnight accommodations. This includes hotel facilities operated by Xanterra, such as El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, and Maswik Lodge, as well as Delaware North’s Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village. Overnight hotel accommodations located outside the park in the town of Tusayan will not be impacted by changes in park operations.

Dry Camping: Only dry camping will be permitted. Spigot access at Mather Campground on the South Rim will be turned off, though faucets in bathrooms will remain operational. Water spigot access will be available at the Mather Campground check-in kiosk "

There's more information on the website about water restrictions, etc.

It's a similar situation to the closure over Labor Day 2024 when the lodges closed for six days. They will repair the trans-canyon water pipeline, and things will return to normal.

p.1 #3 · Grand Canyon South Rim Water Restrictions and Lodging Closures

The National Park Service shared this on social media today, December 10th.

"South Rim Water Update: As of Dec. 8, crews have successfully repaired the broken section of the Transcanyon Waterline and began pumping water to the South Rim. Phantom Ranch is expected to reopen to overnight guests beginning tomorrow, December 11.

South Rim Lodging:
There is no anticipated reopening date for South Rim hotels at this time. As water tank levels rise, we will continue to provide updates on expected reopening timelines."

p.1 #4 · Grand Canyon South Rim Water Restrictions and Lodging Closures

Update: Grand Canyon National Park to reopen South Rim hotels December 17th

Overnight accommodations: Beginning Dec. 17, overnight accommodations will resume at park lodges. This includes facilities operated by Xanterra, such as El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, as well as Delaware North’s Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village. Reservations are now open, and visitors can book stays at these locations.

Camping: Dry camping will still be permitted, and water spigots at Mather Campground and Desert View Campground will remain turned off. However, visitors can access water at the dump station adjacent to the Mather Campground Kiosk.

Fire Restrictions: Fire restrictions will continue for the South Rim, prohibiting all outdoor wood burning, charcoal fires, and campfires in South Rim and inner canyon areas to support water conservation efforts.
