I’m looking at using the lens for travel while replacing my 25mm & 38mm v lenses. This zoom would cover 80% of the focal lengths that I typically use with various formats. I can see where CAF isn’t such a big deal on the wide end, but do you miss it at 35mm? For long periods of carry, do you use the standard lugs, or do you use a tripod attachment with a strap? This lens looks like an easier one to carry than the 35-100mm, but it is still heftier than the 90mm v. Is there a likely replacement in the near term with CAF? That last question is for the clairvoyant amongst you.
1. If I’m carrying a single camera/lens then it’s either a wrist strap or a cross body slide. With the X2D2 that’d be the latter so I’ll always use the tripod mount.
2. I don’t need CAF on the 20-35 because something that wide won’t be my main lens and I didn’t *need* it on the X2D. But I’ll sure use it like crazy on the X2D2/35-100 if offered, depending on the subject.
3. No I don’t think a new version is coming soon. A few years , maybe.
4. The only thing I’ll really miss on the zooms is the focus clutch.
5. I have found I do usually choose the 20-35 over the primes in that range, for its flexibility but some days I do swap it out for the 28P, which I love.

I can’t speak for anyone else but for me….

I also own this lens, and I don't see any (much) need for c-af in this range.
would still be nice if they could make it available per update.
The les where I miss C-AF more is the 135mm.
The lens comes on Monday and I will use it with a PD strap and Clutch. This allows me the added stability when using the clutch, but the anchor also will fit the QR equipped PD Pad and clip and may offer the ability to hang the camera from the belt..doesn’t sound like the best place for such a long lens, or attach to the strap of my sling bag. Selling the 25v is pretty much a necessity at this point.
I own the 20-35 and so far like it. It doesnt feel that heavy. My plan wa to use just 20-35 and 75.
It worked good last winter, but then I also lusted for lighter 38 and 55 lenses, but I would not sell the zoom. Its like 21, 28 , 30 and 35 in one lens.
And specially in cold or not so great conditions its a pleasure to be flexible. I think size and weight is super ok for such a lens.
I sometimes lust for 25 for astro, but I did get some good astro results with the 20-35 as well.
The advantage I see with primes is one learns the lenses and the look. With a zoom one sometimes gets lazy and zooms instead of choosing the appropriate focal length and walk a bit.
Personally I just use the lugs on the body. Fine for me.
