Whoever tries the new firmware: please let us know whether it introduces a warning message for 3rd party batteries that didn't previously result in a warning message. If there's a warning message, it will typically appear about 30 seconds after the camera is turned on.
Neewer T-NP-FZ100 (the brown one with USB-C charging port, purchased in the past year) still operates like an OEM battery, showing numerical charge percentage and no warning message.
A Watson B-4237-3 battery from 2024 that came with a camera body in some kind of bundle from B&H also continues to operate like OEM, no warning.
I hope I'm not giving sony a hit list by supplying this info! 😁
I updated mine and for some reason it reset two of my custom function buttons to default. Other than that, everything seems fine. IMO the AF seems snappier and seems to stay on the subject better than before. I tested it some today with the 200-600 and 600gm. AF performance seemed some better with both.
Does anyone know if this fixes/improves or breaks anything when using the 7RV tethered to a computer?
I shoot most of my work with the 7RV to a MacBook and recently upgraded MacOS to the latest, it has made Sony's Remote Viewer program less reliable. I hope updating firmware fixes this but also hope it doesn't make it worse.
With a PC everything is very reliable and always has been, I just have issues anytime I update Mac software.
I also use many (and love) Smallrig batteries (with the USB-C recharge port), hoping it doesn't make those unusable.

I also use the Smallrig USB-C batteries. On my older FW I get the warning message (you should, too - don't you?) . On the new FW the behavior should be the same - Sony never blocks batteries completely.
I get no message from my Smallrig batteries, I've got various versions of them in different colours, no issues, not even a warning.
They seem exactly like the Sony's, same longevity even though they claim to be of a higher capacity.
Updated and can confirm no messages with Smallrig batteries, at least the orange USB-C charging ones.
Other than that, not much to write home about, can't see anything useful I'd use, however I'll try a video test as we constantly run into overheat issues at about the 40min mark, especially when using it as a web cam and simultaneously recording internally.
Update by Creator's App was a little frustrating, messages that my device wasn't connected to the internet, then having to log in, not recognising my log in etc. got there in the end though.
I am very happy with this (surprising) firmware update. The new auto rotate of display information will be extremely helpful for vertical shooting for landscape photography. Especially milky way photos. Now I won’t have to contort my aging body to check the settings, in the dark. I also think the customizable focus areas will be helpful for certain wildlife photography scenarios. eg, a wide, short box to focus on waterfowl on rivers, where the AF gets easily distracted by waves.

I got about 2:20 or so with the Sony BC-ZD1 and two batteries (one a few minutes earlier than the other). It gets a bit warm but has a heavy heatsink inside to distribute the heat.
Both the Sony USB and AC chargers are not completely finished charging until all lights are off.
The charging states can be a bit confusing, so I made 25x50mm (1x2") graphic labels to affix to the chargers.

Here's what I've got on NP2 Air using QuickCharge when I tested it recently (from completely dead battery):
Though, I wasn't able to actually verify those 100% in-cam, so I'm pretty sure after only 1.5h, it would show 97-99% rather than full 100% (though, who knows, maybe ).
can anyone explain the additional focus options that were added? I don't shoot events and very little wildlife... so I know that I don't take advantage of all the improvements on this front.

You can define custom shape/size rectanges so that AF will lock on to objects inside those areas and ignore anything outside. I suppose it could be useful if you have the camera on a tripod and are waiting for action in a particular location, like a branch you're expecting a bird to land on, for example.
Anyone know if Auto Subject Detection requires some special capability that the A7RV can’t support? Was surprised when I did my firmware update this week to version 4.0 that it wasn’t included like it was on the A7CR and A7CII in their firmware updated done earlier this year. Any chance we will see it in the next firmware update?

Yes, Sony needs your wallet (or rather the contents of it) .

So do I send them money to get a more extensive firmware upgrade for the A7RV I bought at full price or do I buy the newest A7V version that I have on pre-order?
Morning I am trying to update my RV but keep getting the msg on my camera that there is no card inserted into slot one or there is no update file in the media card or the file is damaged. Has anyone experienced this in updating? Brand new card formatted but have tried different cards also which also have the same msg. Any ideas?

Are you formatting the cards on a PC or in the camera? Sometimes the format style matters and I always format mine in the camera. The update file has to be in the root of the card, not a subfolder. Other than having the write-protect lock on the card slid over, I can't think of much else to go wrong. It's odd that it's happening to multiple cards though, which is why I asked about formatting.
jpk1018jk I had the exact same problem as you with 2 different cards even formatting each one totally before installing the download with the same message you got. Likewise as you did, downloaded the Creators App and tried that and it worked fine. I don’t know if it makes a difference what version your last update was 9 (mine was version 3.0) or why neither of us could do an in camera update. At least if anyone is having a problem like this it seems we both did something incorrectly or updating may work best via the APP. No problems with the camera after updating so all is good.

Updated in a mildly inebriated state.
Possibly not irresponsible as it heightened my cautious approach.
Existing 2.02.
Used BODYDATA.DAT to root directory, SD Card Slot 1 (after Formatting SD, in camera)
LED flashing quickly progressed from once per second to 5 times per second.
Confirmed V 4.00 after update.
Several Custom settings remained.
Noticed New Spot Focus Options.
Shoot tomorrow.
