p.1 #1 · Has anyone had a Nikon Z8 that stopped accepting USB PD
I have a two Z8 and one of them just stopped accepting charge via USB PD. Its not a feature that I use all of the time, so I can't pinpoint exactly when it stopped.
I have tried all of my batteries, multiple combinations of cable and chargers, turning off network connections, verifying that PD is enabled in the menu, and obviously I am using the correct port on the camera and it refuses to charge. All of these combinations seem to function as expected on my second body.
Whats weird is that when I plug a USB cable into the PD port - the green light on the back of the camera will blink once (so it seems to detect that the cable has been inserted)
I found a few posts on other sites from a few years ago but nobody mentioned a solution. So I suspect that I know the answer to this and that the camera is going to wind up going in for service/repair but I wanted to see if anyone here has encountered a similar issue (and what the resolution was)

I have tried it on, off, airplane mode... etc.
My main use case for the USB PD is for video work to keep the camera powered (which is when I discovered it wasn't working) but nothing I have tried seems to get it to work. My other Z8 body works fine.

I don't think PD charging in the camera is supposed to work while the camera is being used, only when it is OFF.
Anyway, it's good to check that your battery supports USB charging, it has to be of EN-EL15b or 15c type. 15a will work but won't charge in camera. Battery contact cleanliness also should be checked.

It should supply power when the camera is on and then charge the battery when the camera is off. This is how it works on my other Z8 and how it used to work on this one.
I tested on multiple EN-EL15c batteries as well. The contacts look good and the camera was serviced semi-recently.

Thanks - yeah, I am on 3.1 (and have tried reinstalling) I have been looking to see if I can find a copy of the 3.01 update but no luck yet.
Found it on one french site I put it on my onedrive because their link was acting up.

Are you using a Nikon USB cable? There's one Nikon USB-C cable that specifically does NOT charge cameras and is only for data transfer.
I tried many chargers and cables - none of them worked on this body but all worked on my other Z8... so I think that rules out the chargers and cables. I just scheduled the repair with Nikon so we will see what they come back with.

Ok, I thought there was some limitation but it may have been related to earlier bodies.
But if the camera is ON, then charging the battery does not happen at the same time the camera is operating?
One of the reasons I use a separate charger is I don't trust the USB interface will remain operational for a longer time as cables get yanked. And spare parts will eventually be an issue. But I understand external power is needed for some applications such as a set of long recordings.

PD will absolutely work when the camera is ON.

Update:
Got the camera back from Nikon today after a few weeks with it flip-flopping between being in the shop and "parts hold" which leads me to believe that they may have had a bit of trouble figuring out the issue.
Wound up cost a ~$315 (after an NPS discount) and they wound up replacing the main board on the camera.
No idea what caused the issue but everything is working now.

I wonder if the failure was similar to a laptop charging port. After use and wiggling maybe one of the solder points broke off so they had to swap the main board.
Thanks for sharing the costs, helps give a worst case answer to what can happen.
