p.1 #1 · Topaz Gigapixal vs Topaz Photo Upscale

Looking at Topaz website, Gigapixal looks much better than what i see using Topaz Photo upscale? Their website can be misleading. The detai and resolution “looks” much better than Ive experienced with Topaz Photo.

Does anyone have current personal experience with the 2 products?

p.1 #2 · Topaz Gigapixal vs Topaz Photo Upscale

I compared upscaling with Topaz Gigapixel with upscaling in Topaz Photo AI in November 2024.
At that time, the results of upscaling looked induistinguishable .
Also, the settings in Topaz Gigapixel looked like taken out of Topaz Photo AI.
I had the impression that Gigapixel was the upscale module of Photo AI, offered as a standalone app.
I don't know whether things have changed since that time.
I still have and keep using Topaz Photo AI (but I have not subscribed to the new Topaz Photo).
In my experience, the upscale works reliably well in the latest (and last) version of Topaz Photo AI.

ruthenium, you are correct. I double checked with Topaz because I wanted to make sure. Just looking at their website can be misleading. They advised that Gigapixel model is designed for enlargement with detailed restoration. Photo upscale is one of several features that are not part of Gigapixel, like wow, face recovery, etc. So, Upscale is somewhat equivalent to Gigapixel minus some detail, denoise, sharpen, etc, and is designed specifically for enlargement, restoration, details, according to Topaz.

Thank you for adding personal experience.

p.1 #4 · Topaz Gigapixal vs Topaz Photo Upscale

What you mentioned above is somewhat confusing.
I have Topaz Photo AI 4.0.4, but I am not familiar with their new subscription-only successor to Photo AI, that they now call Topaz Photo. The latter is not available for a free trial (to the best of my knowledge); thus, I don't know how the new Topaz Photo is different from Topaz Photo AI, although I strongly suspect that the differences can be mostly "cosmetic".
With the above disclaimer, my experience was that Topaz Gigapixel worked very much like the "Upscale" tool of Topaz Photo AI. Furthermore, Topaz Gigapixel looked like the Upscale module taken from Photo AI and offered as a standalone app.

The following does not sound right to me: quote, "Upscale is somewhat equivalent to Gigapixel minus some detail, denoise, sharpen, etc, and is designed specifically for enlargement, restoration, details, according to Topaz." In my experience, Gigapixel and the Upscale tool in Photo AI work essentially the same way. They both refine details (sharpen, in effect) and do some denoising as integral adjustments that happen during the upscale process. Thus, Upscale in Photo AI (and most likely in Topaz Photo) is not merely "somewhat equivalent to Gigapixel." In my experience the two were essentially identical in what they did.
I don't know what the following means: "Photo upscale is one of several features that are not part of Gigapixel, like wow, face recovery, etc." Note that Face recovery is a tool in Topaz Photo/Photo AI, but this tool is not part of the Upscale tool - these are two different tools.

In general, Topaz Photo AI/Photo are collections of tools (Sharpen, Denoise, Remove, Upscale, and several others). These tools are a mixed bag. Only few of these tools work well and reliably, without introducing artifacts. Upscale is one. I also find Remove tool to be useful when it is needed. Everything else is open to luck and chance, meaning that the effects can be unpredictable, sometimes unbelievably ugly and accompanied by prominent artifacts.

I have followed the development of the current Topaz software products until recently, and I have formed a certain opinion about the software developers at Topaz. They pursue the development of new tools and features, yet too often the results give the impression of inadequate performance in practice. I find the current subscription costs to be ridiculously high for what Topaz is offering. I am willing to give my money to companies like DxO or Capture One, but I am not subscribing to Topaz.

p.1 #5 · Topaz Gigapixal vs Topaz Photo Upscale

Ruthenium, that fits what I was told by Topaz. I've been a customer of theirs from the start and I used to own all there separate programs including Topaz Gigapixel. And they told me I had no need to renew Topaz Gigapixel and the rest because they were all including in Topaz Photo AI.

Also I was running Topaz Photo AI 4.03 until a few days ago. I just updated to the final release Topaz Photo AI 4.04. When I did that two new things happened:

1) It now says "2 days remaining."

2) It now says "New Topaz Photo."

I paid them for free upgrades through Nov 24, 2025. However, they said they will not upgrade me to the new Topaz Photo for free. That seems odd to me. Why have I been paying them for free upgrades all these years? They just told me to buy it on the Black Friday sale. So I pay the same price as a new customer when I've been paying them for free upgrades? Their support even says "Topaz Photo replaces the legacy licensed Photo AI." So isn't that and upgrade? And didn't I pay them for free upgrades? Oh well I guess "upgrades" are whatever they say they are or aren't.

Secondly when I click on "New Topaz Photo" in version 4.04 of Photo AI it automatically downloads and installs the new Topaz Photo. I can run them side-by-side. This is on Windows 11 - not sure if this is true on the Mac yet. It shows zero credits for rendering in the cloud but it has a link to buy credits. Is this a demo? Or is their tech support wrong and I did get the upgrade and this is a perpetual license to the new Topaz Photo? I have no idea and it isn't listed on my account under my products or my subscriptions. So if you haven't upgraded to 4.04 give it a shot. See if you can download it. In any event all the menu items and everything in the two apps are identical. I don't see any differences at all except the names of the apps.

p.1 #6 · Topaz Gigapixal vs Topaz Photo Upscale

Sorry if didn’t explain it well and left out details. Here is the response from Topaz:

“Topaz Gigapixel is specifially designed for upscaling so if the only thing you need to achieve is upscaling, Topaz Gigapixel would be the way to go!

Both Topaz Photo and Topaz Gigapixel can resize images with scaling or resolution and dimensions, up to 600% in one process or up to a 2GB file with a maximum pixel length on 32k on the longest side. This is the same. However, the apps are not identical.

For Gigapixel, the most notable difference would be models like Recover and Redefine, which Photo AI does not have.
Photo AI has additional enhancements like sharpening, Super Focus, noise reduction, face recovery, text recovery, remove tool, lighting correction, and color balance, all into one product.
The same will be in Topaz Photo and Topaz Gigapixel, except both will have the new Wonder model -

Essentially, they both have advantages, so it really depends on your needs.”

Thanks for the clarification!

"new Wonder model"

What does that mean?

I'm still undecided if I'm going to buy the new subscription. I've been pretty happy with DXO to be perfectly honest. I let my Topaz Gigapixel lapse a couple of version ago based on their advice. I don't really need their video app. Hmmm... A Black Friday conundrum!
