Canon has released the RF 45mm F1.2 STM, which is really handy, weighs under 350g, and costs 500 euros. Sure, there have to be a lot of compromises compared to the previous f/1.2 powerhouses, but honestly? If Sony made this lens, I'd buy it immediately, despite the terrible chromatic aberration. Considering the price, I wonder what it would cost if it came from, say, Viltrox. Why don't the Chinese think of making something like this? Are there too few buyers? Am I in a small minority with my enthusiasm and the fact that I don't care about corner sharpness? In short, am I the only one who would love to see the Canon lens made by Sony?

You’re definitely not the only one, that lens sounds like a sweet spot for everyday shooting. A 45mm f/1.2 that’s that light and affordable is rare, and I’d be all over it if Sony dropped something similar. Most of their fast primes are either heavy or cost a small fortune, so this Canon one really hits a nice balance.

I think the Chinese brands just don’t see enough demand for something like that, which is a shame. Not everyone cares about corner sharpness or pixel level perfection, some of us just want good character and a compact setup. You’re definitely not in the minority there.

The RF28 f2.8 and new RF45 f1.2 are alone worth it to consider Canon as an amateur photographer. R8 is a quite compact camera body, however I'd like a RF style compact from canon like A7C series.
From Sony I'd definitely like 28 1.8G and 45 1.4G in the size of 20 1.8G.

The idea of a compact full-frame camera that, including the 1.2 45mm AF lens, weighs just 810g is indeed tempting, even though I find Canon bodies incredibly ugly and it lacks in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The only thing that puts me off is the 2.4 MP electronic viewfinder (EVF). Of course, an equivalent Sony lens would be ideal. On the other hand, this would be a chance to try out those legendary Canon colors.

I do really enjoy that the 45/1.2 RF has that 50/1.2 EF magic and funkiness. I wouldn't be surprised if it's somehow a similar built and glass configuration.

I'd kill for a lens like this. No more need to adapt old glass for the 'look'. I too am not excited by the look of the Canon R bodies but a lens like this on an A7cII would be sweet.

I would say AF is the reason. They can't match the OEM AF performenace on f/2 lenses, so f/1.2 is out of the question.

That being said, I love the IQ of 50 f/1.2 GM but don't love its size and weight. I would get a smaller f/1.2 AF lens even if IQ was not as great as the GM lens.

Focusing a 1.8 or 1.4 85mm lens should be no less challenging than focusing a 1.2 50mm lens, I would assume.

The compromises one would have to make would be immense. At least, that's the impression I get from the examples in the following video. Nevertheless, I'd still like to try it out.

It looks like a real sweetheart. I'd love to have something like it for the FX3.

;-)
But seriously, I could consider the Canon R6iii and this 45/1.2 lens!

The Canon 45/1.2 does look like a great enthusiast/everyday lens, though it does appear to have some drawbacks. When I saw it, I immediately thought of the Voigtlander 40/1.2. If you use the Techart adapter, you can use the VM version of that lens on e-mount with OK autofocus.

That surprises me. I find the bokeh in some of the sample images rather busy. The Nokton's bokeh, on the other hand, seems remarkably calm to me. I'm only familiar with the 50mm version, but the 40mm should be similar.

Weight aside, I would take a 50/1.2 over a 45/1.2 any day of the week. Because, the oof highlights of the longer focal length lens will always be larger than the wider lens. I know it's not as simple as that but if you are talking about 50-ish mm lenses then I think the principal holds up. And I prefer 55-58/1.2 to 50/1.2.

I'm just saying that the bokeh advantage of an F1.2 lens diminishes rather quickly as the focal length widens.

The Nokton 50's a whole different animal.

Good to know, I haven't actually looked deeply into the Canon samples. What I meant was more that on face value (specs), they seemed rather similar, and I expected the Canon to have some optical flaws/character as well. Not often you see first-party lenses like that.

Wow, wow, wow, based on the reviews, I love everything about it -- the size, weight, fast aperture, focal length, price, even the bokeh. I'd love to see this made by Sony.

It has a PMo asph element. You can read in-between the lines:

'PMo aspherical refers to Plastic-molded (PMo) aspherical lens elements, which are made by injecting optical resin into a precisely shaped aspherical mold. This manufacturing method allows for cost-effective mass production and results in lighter lens elements with improved image quality, making them a common feature in modern, more affordable camera lenses.'

We save on production costs; plastic weighs less than glass; we have it working pretty good; we use them a lot, mostly in our recent cheap lenses.

The fewer compromises are made, the bigger and more difficult the whole thing becomes again. You can't wash yourself without getting wet.
