At least it's only 19% from Thailand. You'd be at $440.30, so still not quite the $500 they want for it on eBay.

The ebay one will also have 19% added to that $500.

I thought tariffs are based on country of manufacture? And Mandler is made in China.

It's possible the store could declare it's from Thailand and no one would check, since apparently all incoming shipments now have to prepay the tariffs (the seller has to declare and pay it when they prepare the shipment).

For some reason I thought it was Thai manufactured lens. You're right, though, so the tariff is now whatever magical number the orange one blessed us with on his trip.

I hadn't heard anything on this new rule requiring the seller to pay the tariffs up front. I know some sellers seem to have worked out deals to pay them on the buyer's behalf, but forcing them to do so would be a massive change in codes governing commerce.

LLL just released their 35 1.4 asph. For $1400.

This now seems crazy expensive given the likes of Mandler etc also making Leica copy lenses. Maybe not this one but you get the drift.

I think there is still value in the LLL products. They are making faithful repros of legendary lenses. As long as they aren't walked on by outfits like Mandler.
A little harder to justify these days though, now that there's other options around and tariffs as well.

It took effect when de minimus was suspended, likely to offset the otherwise massive impact it would have had on suddenly having to collect duties/tariffs on low value shipments. But it also benefits the administration's stance that foreigners will pay the tariffs and not US citizens, by forcing shippers to prepay. Whether or not shippers will add that to the purchase price (they should) is another matter, though I guess the administration hopes that many will absorb the extra cost so as not to alienate apparently much desired US shoppers.

Key Points:

Prepaid Duties Required: Every shipment, regardless of value, must have duties assessed and prepaid before it can be accepted for delivery.
Declaration ID: A 13-character Declaration ID is needed to confirm that duties have been paid. This ID must be presented at the shipping point.
Applicable Tariffs: Goods shipped to the U.S. will be subject to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariffs, which can be as high as 35% depending on the product's country of origin.

I believe the tariff on China is currently 10%?

Yes, relative to Mandler at $500 or less. But compared to a current Lux ASPH, it's cheap. $1400 is also 'cheap' considering that the 35 Cron 8 Element clone retailed for not much less.

What could be seen as a bargain at $1,400 isn't in comparison to the modern 35/1.4 Lux ASPH, but rather to the original 35/1.4 Lux AA it was modeled after, which sells in the $12,000–$16,000 range.

It's a lens most could never justify owning, now made accessible with nearly identical rendering.

On the other hand, the $500 Mandler was styled to look like a Leica, but its rendering has a character of its own. Not bad...just different from the original.

I was one of the early adopters who was able to buy the LLL 8E at $500 including hood.

They obviously were making a profit at the price level, but saw the enthusiasm for the product and adjusted it upwards as they were the only game in town.
I’m wondering for how much longer they can play at that price point. They do have the advantage of name recognition having been around for several years now.

But from a marketing viewpoint, “Mandler” sounds a lot better than “Light Lens Lab”.

What a mess. We're apparently rewriting the rules as we go. Hopefully SCOTUS can put an end to it.

Leica is in its own category regarding pricing - it has become a luxury brand with adjusted prices plus regarding older Leica lenses, these are purely collector-based prices. Comparing here is like comparing apples to oranges - it still opens the question if $1400 for the LLL version is justified or also overpriced by piggy-backing on the hyped original Leica 35/1.4. Personally I believe it is overpriced like most other LLL lenses since they up their pricing on a copy of highly priced Leica collector lens with a no-name brand like LLL. The lens probably costs about the same to make as other Chinese-branded lenses - my guess is 50% of this price, about $600-700 at max. This price I would see justified for this LLL lens.

Yes, a sub-US$3k EV1? I might even try that.

I just bought an old V lens from Japan and the seller included the duty in his shipping cost and it came through in 3 days via DHL and it was over a weekend too.

Faster and easier.

My guess is that many would if available - even with lower res EVF and "only" 24 MP FF sensor for example. I would even consider if the body is mostly made of plastic with some alloy material. Definitely not an item which is a collectible - but for travel etc ideal - you can take this kind of camera anywhere with you. Leica claims the same but practically most wouldn't do this anymore regarding the value of modern M camera with Leica M lens for example. It is like having a lit blinking arrow pointing on you saying "please rob me". Personally, I am using my M gear, but I fully avoid taking it to less safe areas or especially to Germany into larger cities for example. I am using my old Sony A7R here instead.

If the A7C was made by Nikon or Fuji, I would have two lol. It's the closest thing to a FF affordable "rangefinder" format camera we have.

Agreed - I would have never considered Sony or even Leica if Fuji just made also mirrorless full-frame cameras with exchangeable lens mount.

Even though some might disagree, if DJI (now part of the L mount alliance) made a small CL type of camera they would sell plenty if they could keep supply coming which seems to be a problem with the current X2Dii and new lens.

I would be first in line for a DJI full frame interchangeable lens camera. Well as long as it was at super competitive DJI prices to shake up the market.

Back to the topic of the thread, I did some side-by-side not super scientific testing at my house between the mandler and my 7A 35 1.4...
I prefer the 7A in almost every way.

A local buddy has first dibs on my mandler, but if passes it'll be going on the buy and sell.

It's highly competitive in the video world, even with the 8K upgrade and optional e-mount. Plus you get the fun of training it to focus your lenses.

Yeah DJI is class-leading in essentially every market they enter. The Ronin 4D was used for most of (if not all?) the CIVIL WAR movie.
