Tested it in a big crowd tonight, it's definitely more precise and stickier, but in wide AF it kept wanting to grab onto people's eyes way WAY WAY behind my "subjects", I had to switch to XS single focus point to get it to focus where I wanted it to. Sounds like we need eye-controlled AF next lol
I don't know about you guys but I have been using Sony's Creators app for the last couple updates. I am impressed and happy at the speed and simplicity.

I does seem more relaxed about the AF area borders when it can identify a target though. E.g. going straight to the eyes even where the AF field ends below the neck. Selecting specific folks with a small-ish AF field seems easy enough.
can anyone confirm once the firmware is loaded to the card in the camera can I just take the card out and place it in another a1 ll and up grade, or do i need to re download and go through the steps on the creators app.

I didn't get a lot of shooting in this morning. Thick, dark clouds. Was shooting at f/4, 1/1600, ISO 8000 to give some idea of light levels.
But, instantly noticed the Eye-AF box snap on way quicker. It also seems to have gone back closer to A1 in staying with a centered subject and not always wanting to shift focus to closer vegetation or ripples in the water (when in Zone or Wide). I still had a couple times it went for near by ripples when it couldn't detect a bird in centre anymore but overall seemed way better than A1II prior to FW 4.0.
I didn't get to test any small birds in branches to see if it has closed the gap to Canon yet. Will try some of that in the backyard this afternoon.
Overall though seems to be a nice upgrade and you really do notice it instantly when you start aiming it at the birds.

Maybe I should test it on some Canada geese until I get to shoot eagles in 2 weeks..
I could not seem to do the update with CF-A cards for some reason on my A9iii with version 1. I ended up finding an old SD card and that did the trick. Unlike most of you, I’m going to be shooting much more difficult subjects at a dinner party tonight, so I will be able to really put the AF through its paces.

Yes. Definitely. I did this on both my a1 m2 bodies.

Is this real time recognition AF+ “always active” or some kind of setting
I don’t see a setting for this
It's just a name for the new version of AF. As before you can disable it, but you can not revert to the previous AF implementation.
I used the new FW yesterday and I can confirm there is definitely some improvement in subjet recognition and tracking need more time to quantify it but the fact it was immediately obvious means that the improvement is not so subtle....
I'm surprised there isn't more coverage on this update, written or on YT. Sony just updated their focus system, and almost no one's talking about it.
I was expecting to see dozens of "Sony's best just got better..." videos the same day.

Not that I'm complaining.
I don't think they have ever sent out advance notice of updates, so it's not surprising at all, at least to me. I'm sure you'll see those types of videos soon. I'll just be looking for text-based reports here on FM. Nothing more annoying than having to sit through an unnecessarily long video with ads when three paragraphs of text will do that job.
