A few short weeks ago, you couldn't help but seeing several Typoch lens threads posted here on the first page. All the sudden, it is no longer the case. I am not following those threads but why the change? Are Typoch lenses falling out of favor and they are no longer the darling of this community anymore? Just curious....

Hi, Joshua. To answer your question, I don’t think the Thypoch lenses have ever been a darling of this community. Only a small handful of us shoot with them, including myself, Dmitry, Philip, and Dan. A few others but they rarely post images. I think there are actually more detractors than users! 😂

I use my 28mm all the time and have been using my new 35mm more lately. As you know, I’m not one to use a new lens for a few days and then sell it. I use a new lens for a long time in various scenarios until I get a feel for it and what it can and can’t do for how I like to photograph. I use the living daylights out of them! It’s the only way to really know a lens and also learn more about myself and how I see and how I photograph.

What surprised me was how much I liked the experience and images from my first Thypoch - the 28/1.4 e-mount. It was Dmitry‘s images with that lens that drew me in (he’s an amazing photographer as can be seen in the many images he has posted). Once I had it in my hands, I immediately fell in love with the very small size and quality of the lens. I mean, where can you find a superb and SMALL 28/1.4 for $399?!

I think the threads have slowed down a little because there are only 3-4 people posting to them (other than the detractors. 🙂 ).

Great reply Eric!
I feel like MF users is a niche photography segment as it is and there are so many options to choose from, that many of the MF old-schoolers already have their favorite gear - tough for a “new” lens brand to get an established photographer “hooked”
Ive been enjoying the 50 simera - mostly for its up close sharpness and bokeh therapy (as the YT channel of Mr. Wang is called that I shared earlier). The other video that I posted regarding the 50 is from Macro Marvin - it also shows excellent sharpness up close.

Heres two snaps of a Cuban Knight Anole that fell from a very very tall Cuban royal palm when we had a cold night a wk ago. Feeding him until his leg heals. He does not like being captured…

Anyhow, taken with the Techart Adapter v1 in the shade. AF focused on the eye

The lack of EXIF is sure a bummer for many and I have to say that cosina really had me spoiled with their build quality. But I really really appreciate the generally simpler lens designs (especially of the 35 and 50). I still feel like this “High-Refractive Index” glass made in China is using/infused with Lead-oxide. If this is truly the case, the simeras have an “unfair” advantage over manufacturers that follow the silly EU guideline not to use it in optics.
I mean, just look at the comparisons in a review by Vincent of the 35 Simera to the 35 Summilux at 35mmc.com - the differences are obvious in overall image quality. I much prefer the Simera. Thats good for me, because I wont be looking at Leica Lenses in the future.
Also the Cine comparison that Matt Osborne did between Simera-C and Leica Cine shows only minute differences in rendering. I saw that the 5-lens Simera Cine kit was sold out after the B&H black event, now it is back in stock - so they are selling!

Back to bokeh therapy with the 50. I generally shoot flowers at 75 or longer, but since I can get so close with the 50, it has been my daily carry.
Again, no EXIF that Minolta pioneered and Sony took over and no confirmation chip for Nikonites, but I like the output! Nervous backgrounds are easily obliterated at MFD and wide open and stays smooth with sweet specular highlights when stopping down. The 14 blade aperature is IMO a selling point in and of itself!
At mid distance the 50’s swirl reminds me of the 75 Biotar very much.

I think the holiday sales Thypoch put on reinvigorated the discussion. I tried the 35 at launch, the 50 about a year ago and the 28 recently.

I dislike the 35, but think the 50 is a nice lens and the 28 offers lovely images in an underserved focal length.

If I could find an m-mount version for the price Thypoch was selling the e-mount version, I’d own one.

As for the “detractors” thing. Thypoch’s marketing and hype machine has been obnoxious from before the lenses were released. Go back and read the initial Thypoch thread I started on FM to understand.

When we have been essentially spammed infomercials by YouTube shills topped off with Phillip’s inflated views, people are going to push back. If you claim the lenses are so majestic, they pretty much better be perfect. Large claims invite intense scrutiny. This whole Cinema thing is a lot of marketing I think, especially given the lenses focus breathe intensely and are not color corrected as a set. You don’t see Zeiss or Leica or CV dealing with some of the backlash because they don’t make these type of claims.

If you look at more trusted and balanced reviews, like Bastian’s and Fred’s and even some of the things I’ve posted on here, you can get a pretty good understanding of Thypoch’s design and lens lineup. Overall, they offer tweaks or copies of Leica or CV with some moderate to minor differences. The 28 is an exception it seems to be an original formula and that is my favorite of their lenses.

Honestly, they make some really nice glass that can produce lovely images that has a particular signature. Myself included, shooters would like their lenses to be a bit more specified for the mount they are released in including chipped, better MFD’s and optimized for sensor stacks.

Overall, it is nice that Thypoch is in this space offering us real alternatives. I will continue to watch what they do and only shoot the lenses myself or follow trusted sources to understand them.

I'm still interested, got my 50 the other day and had a 28 for only a little while. But haven't had much chance to use them.

I liked my 50 quick test shots - bit more airy, lighthearted, fun. Exactly what I wanted to mix things up a little. Makes things a little less depressing, more bubbly (not the bokeh).
Noticed that also held in the higher iso indoor shots, which I appreciate.

I saw a green flare (small blob) in a few outdoor images with the 50 on a fully overcast day, no hood. The hoods are too much for me though and that small flare doesn't bother me much.

Just a tad concerned since it was fully overcast... suns been gone for a while here now. Really happy with the test shots on the 50 otherwise (a couple in this post here).

I was also reading Fred's comments about the 50mm simera, in comparison with the 1.4 summilux and apparently that has worse flair resistance.

I'm close to getting the 35mm but mostly thinking about that one for indoors. Distagon is a bit big for that, and need to be a bit careful with the background on that one, suits outdoors more I think.

Ohhhhnooooo, just read this post, had to check the price.....

bought one in an instand (28 e-mount) ..... free camera cord included

The only 28mm lens I've ever owned was the Sony2/28. Not bad really, but nothing like the images I've seen on these pages. Looking forward to putting this lens to work on the streets in 2026

Do they ship from China? It says you have to pay tariffs and import taxes upon delivery.

EDIT: Never mind, I see they're selling for the same price on B&H and Amazon too.

What is the consensus on the 35mm? Is it worse than the 28? I'm not a fan of the 28mm focal length.

Theres really no concensus on the Typoch Simeras, as they seem to be a bit polarizing - “oldschool” without EXIF and aperature ring that favors the wider open range with larger stop increments as you get beyond f/4

I love the 35! Only the MFD could be shorter than 45cm.
The 28 I found sharper especially because the DOF is much wider than with the 35

But I also prefer the 35 FOV to the 28 and complement the 35 with the 50 simera.
Also do the same with the Sony Zeiss 35 and 55 which gives a cooler look than these Simeras.

Can someone with a more astute eye try to help me describe the look and how it differs from something like a nokton which I feel has a less modern look (that I also quite like).

There's like a subtle cool-temp bloom, and that's what's on the leica summiluxes too?

It's not on the whites but the higher mids, then with the low structure in the bokeh it gives it an airy, positive feel?

Or like slightly raised shadows, and more mids-highlights and a little lower contrast compared to something like cv nokton rendering, which look a little less modern - is that the thing?

I know this is a (crossing over) borderline ramble post. Last ditch attempt to procrastinate before I "get back to" work.

It's going to be a hair too modern for film right. So what are all the leica people using for film if not summilux. Summicrons that are just sharp...?
