A few short weeks ago, you couldn't help but seeing several Typoch lens threads posted here on the first page. All the sudden, it is no longer the case. I am not following those threads but why the change? Are Typoch lenses falling out of favor and they are no longer the darling of this community anymore? Just curious....
I think the holiday sales Thypoch put on reinvigorated the discussion. I tried the 35 at launch, the 50 about a year ago and the 28 recently.
I dislike the 35, but think the 50 is a nice lens and the 28 offers lovely images in an underserved focal length.
If I could find an m-mount version for the price Thypoch was selling the e-mount version, I’d own one.
As for the “detractors” thing. Thypoch’s marketing and hype machine has been obnoxious from before the lenses were released. Go back and read the initial Thypoch thread I started on FM to understand.
When we have essentially spammed infomercials by YouTube shills topped off with Phillip’s inflated views, people are going to push back. If you claim the lenses are so majestic, they pretty much better be perfect. Large claims invite intense scrutiny. This whole Cinema thing is a lot of marketing I think, especially given the lenses focus breathe intensely and are not color corrected as a set. You don’t see Zeiss or Leica or CV dealing with some of the backlash because they don’t make these type of claims.
If you look at more trusted and balanced reviews, like Bastian’s and Fred’s and even some of the things I’ve posted on here, you can get a pretty good understanding of Thypoch’s design and lens lineup. Overall, they offer tweaks or copies of Leica or CV with some moderate to minor differences. The 28 is an exception it seems to be an original formula and that is my favorite of their lenses.
Honestly, they make some really nice glass that can produce lovely images that has a particular signature. Myself included, shooters would like their lenses to be a bit more specified for the amount they are released in including chipped, better MFD’s and optimized for sensor stacks.
Overall, it is nice that Thypoch is in this space offering us real alternatives. I will continue to watch what they do and only shoot the lenses myself or follow trusted sources to understand them.
