I don't own one now, but had several of the older version years ago. Mine gave me images that looked as good as those taken with the 300 f4 lenses that I owned.
Being that the quality of the images was so close between the two, I preferred the zoom simply for the versatility of different focal lengths.

Fantastic images @gmccroskery! I see that some images are from 100-400mk1 and some from mk2. Can't see any noticeable difference between the IQ of the two in this reduced size but do you notice anything in the RAW files? The mk1 lenses are down to really good prices now a days so I was wondering may be I should stop chasing after the mk2. I don't even shoot that much, but "good to have".

In answer to your question. I bought the Mk ll version primarily for the 'Synch IS' upgrade. I also feel that it may have a very slight edge in subject acquisition speed -- and I do like the redesigned tripod collar, but that is a small issue.
That said, I did some careful indoor sharpness comparisons (on tripod, wireless shutter release, etc.) between the two and see no difference. If there is any it's not enough to matter in my opinion -- both are very sharp.
If you are not in a huge rush, within the next week or so, I plan to list my old lens on the Buy & Sell Forum here. I meant to do this much earlier, but holidays and personal issues got in the way -- and I've been dragging my feet. My older lens is in mint condition, other than a couple very minor small scuffs on the tripod collar foot, and has lens hood, caps, and original box. I'm thinking a price around the $750 + PP fees.

I recently moved to the Pacific Northwest from California and picked up an OM-1 Mark II with the 100–400mm for the weather sealing and lightweight nature of the setup. So far, the ergonomics, autofocus, and battery life have been excellent. It complements my Canon R10 and RF 100–400 nicely, but as a newcomer to Micro Four Thirds I’m still exploring the best techniques to get the most out of the system.
