These little guys are virtually everywhere in Southern California, the Western Fence Lizard. These lizards vary greatly in appearance as you can see in the pictures below. They can look spotted, striped, blotched or solid brown, and they often look very dark before they have warmed up. To get a different perspective I approached them lying flat on my stomach and since they were warming themselves in the cool morning they were less apt to run away. The very close MFD of the 100-400 ( 4 feet), @ 800mm effective allowed me to come close to filling the frame without chasing them away. Thanks for taking a look !

Lots to like here Gary, great work on these ground huggers! I like the ones with catchlights in the eyes and you have a few wonderful comps here too.

Before your post I was not aware of this western species. Interesting, very close interaction between you and this lizard. And you pointed out a big advantage of the long zooms.
Excellent photos of an interesting subject. They are plentiful here but very few photographers ever manage to get a good shot. You seem to have the right technique.

The morning I got to this spot which is a very small nature trail in South Pasadena, they were all over the place sunning. I went bak the next day and only saw one running into the weeds. Guess I just got lucky that morning Appreciate the comments Don
