p.1 #1 · 7th Grade football

Had the chance to shoot 1/2 of my grandson's football game and thought I'd share a few pics. Used the RF 200-800 exclusively just to see what I could do. Don't shoot football much but thought these would be ok to share.

These are nice. My only nit is #3 is focused on player 4 -- not 15 -- and you seem to be shooting the team in black, so the wrong person is in focus.

Went back to DPP and see that the focal point is indeed on #15 (see below) and was on him for several frames in the sequence. However, I can tell that there are times the actual focus on the 200-800 hasn't caught up with what's in the focal point. Plus, my SS wasn't super fast.

Nice to see you using the 200-800 lens. I have also found that while it's pretty good at keeping up with focusing on action "most" of the time, there are times where it seems to lock on, but not quite as quick as L glass. Would make sense since it's not really considered pro gear.

I actually used mine to shoot a nighttime HS game a week or so ago. Cranked up the ISO and let 'er rip. It worked out surprisingly well. However, I'm not sure the lens was the factor as much as the ISO capabilities of the R3 body. I had it set to auto ISO and had images at ISO 51200 that were unbelievable.

The RF 200-800 definitely had trouble keeping up at times. After leaving the middle school game, I went to my 7-year-old grandson's tackle football game (first year for him). With the R5 vII and the RF 200-800 it was definitely challenging. A bit of Topaz Sharpening and DeNoise helped a lot! Still learning the R52 nuances and had some trouble with keeping the SS high. However, I've also picked up an R3, so I need to start using and becoming familiar with that.

Would definitely prefer some of my L lenses but was trying to travel lighter and not carry as much on that trip, especially since I had to go from there to a conference the next day.

I’ve been a two-body combo person for several years (and sometimes 3!) with the R5 bodies. Just been using the RF 200-800 to get used to it and travel lighter. !
