1DX2 repair costs - $750 worth it?

p.1 #1 · 1DX2 repair costs - $750 worth it?

Purchased a used 1DX2 on eBay for $1,000 with a known problem with the dials. I figured that I could get it repaired with my CPS Platinum discount. Just got the estimates back and floored by how expensive it is, and now debating whether to just use it as-is. Or just pay the repair costs.

Here are Canon's comments: "During the inspection, it was found that the vertical dial skips when rotated and the multi-control button operates intermittently."

Opinions on my options?

How big of a problem is it in use?

Haven't used it yet. Bought it on eBay and sent it straight to Canon. When I played around with it for a few minutes, it didn't seem too bad though. Should I just get it back and use it, and if it's an issue, I can just send it back to Canon?

To be more specific, the seller indicated in the Ebay listing that the multi-function button was wonky. But they didn't mention anything about issues with the vertical dial. So the $1,000 purchased turned into a $575 purchase after getting a partial refund. So the "real" cost of this purchase and repair will be roughly $1325.

Still debating whether to spend $750 for this repair though.

Looks like an EX condition body on KEH is $1200. Not sure about here. $1325 would put you a couple hundred over the going rate for EX condition but would come with Canon's service warranty (though not sure how long it is - maybe 6 months?).

Pretty sure you can decline the repair, use the camera and then decide whether or not to get it serviced if the problems bother you enough.

The Canon Japan site indicates that the 1DXII will be supported until July 2026, so you still have a bit of time to decide.

I went ahead and accepted the $750 repair costs. The camera was already purchased for $1,000 off Ebay, so it was just a matter of accepting the repair costs or not. The $400 partial refund from the seller helped with that decision. All in all, for $1375, I got the camera, which will be repaired/cleaned by CPS + charger + three batteries. I will try to flip the charger for some money since I have two now.

CPS will probably make it like new again while they are doing the repairs. You will now know that it is in good shape verses taking a chance buying another used body.

Yeah, I agree. I wasn't considering purchasing another used body though. More about having sticker shock at how much it costs to repair, and whether I should just use a body with faulty dials or not. At the end of the day, the Ebay partial refund helped big time. Also, I'm not sure how long I am going to be a CPS member (at least not Platinum) so I decided to just eat it now while I have the 30% discount.

Regarding the cost: my guess is they can't just replace the dial or controller but have to replace the entire portion of the exterior shell the includes these parts. If this is the case, the camera likely will come back looking newer than it did going there.

My 1DX mk II has bad multi-controller pads (both regular and vertical). Good to know how much it may cost if I ever need to send it in.

Agreed. I didn't have that specific problem with the 1DXII but after a while some of the back buttons became less 'springy,' perhaps related to 1.2M shutter actuations over ~6 years.

After a couple years, my R6II's rear quick control dial's clicks have become too 'grabby' and not as smooth as it used to be.

iDX2 prices on MPB run from $1340 to a low of $554 the low's based primarily on "well used" cosmetic condition, and "extremely" high shutter count.
Perceived value would be highly dependent upon the shutter count, so if it's "low" may be worth the repair cost, but that would reflect a $1750 investment.
You could also try to sell it, or trade with MPB for a low SC, cosmetically excellent, warranted model for hopefully less than $750=S&H?

It looks like you already decided but I would have turned around and sold it on ebay in the condition you got it. You will get fixed dials but it will have the same shutter and the part that is the most important on those bodies is the shutter box. If the repair was the shutter box it was probably a good investment. You did not make a bad choice. The 1DX II is a good body.

I know that shutters can go at any time, but I looked at the camera info within the settings and the shutter count was super low at roughly 50K. Not sure how accurate that is though.

I have the Shutter Count program installed so maybe I'll take a look there.

$1325 is a bit high but doesn't sound too bad. Maybe it's up to spec better since its been serviced

In the long run, a few hundred bucks is negligible since I'm using this for sports-related gigs. On an unrelated note, I've said it before on this forum but love the turnaround time in which CPS operates (e.g. shipped this camera to Canon on Monday, repaired, and in my hands by Thursday).

The shutter count should be accurate. I agree about CPS. It's a service that is apparently often overlooked by many when weighting system vs. system pros and cons. Anyway, for sports I'd take any mirrorless from the R6 and higher. IMO the only advantage of the 1DXII was ergonomics in certain situations and no viewfinder lag, which for me at least meant the ability to more consistently time single frame 'peak action' shots. With mirrorless I just rely on 30 or 40fps instead.

I still haven't taken the mirrorless plunge, mostly due to cost. I bought a second 5DSR earlier this year and now this 1DX2 lol. Also, for my sports gigs, it's not consistent work so didn't want to drop lots of money on my dream camera right now, R3 lolol.

5DSR, 1DXII, plus repair = ~ used R5.

Not your dream mirrorless, but it will do sports well. Actually, it will do everything well. Not necessarily the best, but I'd still pick it over these DSLRs if given the choice.

Yeah, but my calculations includes extra costs like memory cards, brackets, batteries, etc. If only life was so simple where it would only be camera costs lolol
