Curious what one you are using now? I might buy the IDS grip.
Precisely. I completely agree 100%….very well stated. I own both myself and I’ll need to use both for quite a while before I’ll be able to completely sort out which works best for me. One additional thought - the IDS grip is cold…the Sony half case is very comfy in freezing temps.

I just got the IDS thumb grip and I wouldnt recommend it. It misses the important buttons nicely but the curve is minor and doesnt really add to much in the way of increased grip. I wish Match Technical would make one, I have one on the Rx1rii and that brass TU is a thing of beauty. Fits to your thumb like a glove!
Most, if not all other Ive seen so far stop too far before the camera edge and need to be reached for.

I ordered one too... and was concerned about the same thing you are complaining about.
I agree the IDS thumb grip provides a more subtle curve but not blocking the buttons is a key feature. I don't like having to fold the TU back. The IDS TU is perfect if used in tandem with a grip. I use it with the IDS grip and it's a great combo. If I were using a TU only setup without a grip, I would probably opt for the OEM TU.
After being completely underwhelmed by the IDS thumb grip I purchased one of these which looked like it had a reasonable offset. https://www.ebay.com/itm/365879172356?var=635654071198
Much much better. It actually performs like a thumbgrip now. I was reluctant to go the folding arm direction but it works very well. I would recommend.
Having spent 5,000 dollars on the camera, why would you go third party unless Sony doesn’t make these accessories. My hypothesis is that those who can afford this camera can also afford original Sony accessories, given how much of a good to have camera it is. That said, I’m also drooling over it.
I'll wait for Match Technical to make Thumbs Up for Sony RX1RIII. Until then, I'm happy with Sony leather case. I still kept the Mark 2 as I just can't let go my Match Technical Thumbs Up Sony RX1RII 😃. Maybe I'll list my II soon in here
Personally I don’t think this is an obvious thing.
Paying $300 for a thumb grip and $250 for a half-case would make sense if there were objectively large fit/finish and functionality differences between OEM and third party but we have seen there are some good vendors who make really good stuff.
Just because you spend $XK on the camera I am not sure it follows that third party makes no sense.
Jason Vinson on Youtube talks about the IDSworks grip and thumb grip for a few minutes around the 11 minute mark in his "10,000 Photos and the Truth About This $5,000 Compact" video if anyone is interested in that. I was interested in it until I saw the price of it. I think I will just settle for a normal thumb grip if I ever get this camera.
I was the same. They are the best design. But Ive spoken with them and they wont be making it. :-(

Its not about price, its about design. The Sony is quite short like many others.

Your hypothesis isn't so great
I have the camera.... and have tried multiple brands of accessories.
I had the IDS, OEM Sony, and two different Chinese Thumb Grips. They all have their pluses and minuses. The one I'm using now is the Iborrys, very similar to Sony OEM shape... and way less money.
As for the hand grip...I tried the Sony, IBorrys, JJC and one other settled on the JJC. The JJC has a built in Arca Swiss plate... which is the main reason I kept it.

That’s the one I settled on too. They also sell it on Amazon. It takes multiple weeks to get it though.
I like Sony leather case a lot, well designed with good protection. For RX1r3, I don't think I will ever add a thumb grip. Two key wheel will not easily accessible with it. Exposure compensation and I use back wheel for focal length crop setting which I used often to use RX1 as 50mm f2.8 fixed camera.
I’m using both a Sony thumb grip and body case. What I like about the thumb grip is that it springs back to its original position. As for the case, the synthetic leather feels nice and I really like how the camera looks once it’s fitted with it.
RX1R users — do you have a ND on the unit most of the time when outdoors? What hood/cap solution works with this setup without needing to fiddle too much taking things on or off? Ideally, I’d like to have a versatile filter on there almost all the time (an everyday mist/nd/cpl type combo), but am struggling with having to trade that off against the hood options out there.

I am having the same struggle, and the only thing I've found to date is the Freewell... But I don't like their filter they offer with the kit, I know I can change that out but feel they should just offer that as an option...

That’s a terribly flawed logic 🤦🏽♂️. There’s a lot of technology packed into the camera (albeit recycled technology but miniaturization costs $$$ and you can justify the crazy price). But these accessories don’t have the same R&D and technology — so Sony is just trying to be Leica and bend their customers over some more. You have to be a fool to just blindly pay the even more ridiculously overpriced Sony accessories — when you can buy similar or even better quality 3rd party equivalents for significantly less, 🤦🏽♂️
