I just ordered one. Visited or inquired upon at least 12 stores in Los Angeles this weekend and almost none of them have iPhone 17 Pros, (or if they do, it's the lowest storage tier). 1TB models are on backorder for 3 weeks now, which is too bad as I really wanted on for my upcoming trip to Norway.
How long is your trip? Buy whatever you can find the day before you leave and return it within 14 days. Totally legit from Apple's point of view. It just feeds their refurbished store with slightly discounted products for some of us to buy.
If you do this, maybe don't totally transfer everything from your previous phone (like eSIMS) and continue to use the old phone for day to day 'business' until you get the actual replacement you want. Use the interim phone as a secondary device primarily for the camera.

Picked up my 17 pro last weekend. Nice upgrade from the my 13. Rainy day in the mountains in Steamboat today. A few aspen leaves while I waited for the dog to get down to business.

Saw this lady on my way back from happy hour last night (glad I decided not to walk!).
Also this second was an experiment. I could make out the Milky Way with my naked eye, so I decided to test the night mode on the iPhone. This was hand held and does some weird thing where it over exposes the middle, but I'm sure it's by design, but I was surprised you could see some of the galactic core. Not a great picture just more on capabilities.

Stock camera app, shot ProRaw on the main wide camera on an iPhone 16 Pro. When the iPhone detects it is totally stable like on a tripod, it will let you set the night mode max exposure time from the usual max of 10 sec to 30 sec. I wouldn’t bother with the wide angle or tele lenses for Astro stuff, it never comes out as clean as images from the main sensor.
(Both of these shots look pretty grainy here due to how much I had to downsize them to fit the upload requirements btw)

Thanks! So you used a tripod and set Night mode to "Max". That drops the file to 12MP, but Apple combines multiple exposures with heavy noise averaging, which gives a fantastic final result. Did you do any editing on the final DNG in Lightroom? Appreciate you sharing!

Unfortunately the 16 Pro I used for these images suffered from the issue with blue lines appearing in all night mode images. It was a sensor issue they had with the early 16 pro batches, so I had to do some selective masking and desaturation to reduce the blue lines in these. They replaced my 16 Pro under warranty, and the replacement (and my 17 Pro) do not suffer from this.

That would've been a decent idea I had seen this post before I left.
That said, I hate setting up phones, even with the convenience of iCloud restoration. I'd prefer to do setup once as it takes more time than I like to spend getting devices "up to speed."

grabbed an 1TB ssd since it's easier to transfer files to the laptop - also playing with black magic videos is pretty fun
also got around the crazy backup file system apple uses

The question is how many of you will decide to let go off your EDC camera for a 17 Pro/max? Are you attaching anything to the phone to make it more tactile like a small point-n-shoot?
I was looking to upgrade from my RX1 to the RX13, and I have a Rx100VII. Now that I see these images, I am seriously debating if I should ditch all and just get the 17ProMax with some grips (I have a 14Pro max currently).

My 17 pro max arrived yesterday after a long wait, upgrading from the 15 pro max, and also have the RX1R III as EDC. My most valuable photos, to me, the most memorable and important, all are of my family and every day life, and all are from the iPhone. Live View is essentially pre-/post-capture in one shot, for family that closes their eyes, unstable group selfies, or dogs that won't be still held, for sharing, Memories slideshows, timelapses not to mention video (with Blackmagic app and Insta360 flow gimbal) and flexibility of three cameras for me make it essential. I have a SmallRig case for mounting points to a small joby tripod, but may start exploring cases with attachable filters.
My RX1R III (or Leica D-Lux 7/8 EDCs I have/tried) are still great EDCs for more contemplative photos, ones I may want to print large like landscapes, stitchable scenes, etc., but even if cost were the same, I would always choose the phone if I could only have one, and I value these EDCs far more than my larger "for fun" systems.
Also, some scenes are just easier or even only possible with more flexible lenses, like this where I had both my RX1R III and iPhone 15 pm, but couldn't get the 35mm FOV to work even with stitching, so it's a wide iPhone shot that made it possible.
