I've been using the stock camera app mainly for this reason as well. Really hoping Apple changes the API so apps like Leica Lux and XP4N can take better advantage of the tele and super wide lens. Still, the new tele photo on the 17 Pro has been way better than I was expecting for a phone 8x zoom.

Most good third-party camera apps allow raw+jpg, but unfortunately the Moment Pro Camera app can't do exactly what I'm describing. No app can. What I want is to tweak exposure...set a low ISO for long exposures on a tripod --- and still get full 48MP. This limitation comes from Apple's API. Because of that, in my view, third-party camera apps are basically useless for my specific needs. That said, they're still solid apps if you don't mind 12MP output or if you prefer their interface.

Gotcha Fred.

There isn't much activity on the smartphone image thread right now, but that's exactly why I'm open to giving it a shot. If there were a dedicated board for smartphone photography and videography, things might pick up. Personally, I don't usually rely on my phone as a camera, but I'm willing to try it out, share my experience, and would really like to hear from others too.

Go for it Fred. I've have always been pushing smartphone photography. It's the future. I feel if there was a dedicated forum people would be there like Sony, Fuji etc. I just found this thread today because I don't normally check the Leica & Alternative Gear forum.

First is iPhone 17 Pro with the 24mm wide angle, then the new 8x tele. Not bad for a phone in so so light.

I too got the phone and am quite surprised with the telephoto at 4x. Makes for great portraits!

Something I noticed specifically with the 4x lens: if the ISO automatically ramps up too high in low light, the file resolution drops from 48MP to 12MP. Using a tripod doesn't prevent this. The other lenses can still output 48MP but the 1x lens is the most consistent in low light.

Also, when Night Mode is active, the resolution always drops to 12MP, no matter which camera you use.

I think you can over come the Night mode issue by using ProRaw format though. I have some astro shots taken with the main lens on iPhone 16 Pro that are larger than 12MP.

Even I was surprised/impressed by some of the shots Lee snapped with the 17 Pro in comparison to the A1 setup. He's got some tips in the video about how to get around some of the iPhone quirks.

You can also use Adobe Lightroom Classic to add depth-of-field effects in post, similar to Portrait Mode. It works really well and even lets you adjust the bokeh style, from classic to modern. Using Apple's Portrait Mode is "better" in terms of depth accuracy since it leverages LIDAR, but it doesn't allow shooting in RAW or 48MP. The app he mentioned (Focos) offers the same kind of depth editing that Lightroom Classic provides but if you want to do editing on the phone it's a good choice.

Adobe has not yet released profiles for the new iPhone 17 series ProRAW files. I believe this is why "Project Indigo" does not currently support the new iPhones. Once Adobe updates Lightroom and Camera Raw with the new profiles, Project Indigo should become compatible shortly. They are saying that a full camera calibration is required, whatever that means.

As a certified gear head, I agree that it’s misleading to call what is essentially a crop optical quality or whatever terms Apple uses.

But, I am astounded by the detail that I can get hand held in 8x (200equivalent) mode. I don’t know what magic Apple is using. I assume it comes from incredible stabilization and maybe combining images.

Yes I too have been impressed with the images I'm getting out of this phone.

The 13mm lens (0.5x) is not as impressive as the others, especially when compared to the main 24mm lens (1x), but I am still pleased with the results. It is remarkable considering it is just a single image output, even though the camera likely combined several shots to create it.

Yeah the super wide is still the weak point but it seems like Apple is doing more sharpening in the corners on the 17 Pro compared to my 16 Pro. A little bit anyway.

So glad the 8x is as strong as it is now, never would have gotten this before:

I use the Image Capture app on my Mac. This is actually the only thing I use it for and just direct it to put the photos in a folder of my choosing. I'll then copy the photos over to my phone photos backup.

I also use Google Photos on the iPhone to directly backup to my Google account. I use this in part because I was previously on Android but I also like Google's cloud apps and storage options better than Apple's.

I just ordered one. Visited or inquired upon at least 12 stores in Los Angeles this weekend and almost none of them have iPhone 17 Pros, (or if they do, it's the lowest storage tier). 1TB models are on backorder for 3 weeks now, which is too bad as I really wanted on for my upcoming trip to Norway.

Question? Why do I have to keep selecting RAW 48mp every time I open the camera app and if the telephoto is suppose to be 48 mp why is it only showing 12mp? I'm I missing something? obviously🤣

The answer is that it's customizable.

Go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings, and you'll see options to choose which settings the Camera app remembers each time you open it.
