Newly released TTArtisan 40mm f/2 looks like an interesting lens. It has an all-metal build, and, it is 7mm narrower and 1mm shorter than Sony 40G, and almost the same weight. No weather-sealing and STM focusing motor though, however, at $168, I think it will be worth it to try it. It will make a good lightweight walk-around lens for sure.
I've been shooting it pre-release. Unfortunately, TTA seems to have some issues with the Z mount that I test on that the E mount doesn't have...I like what I see so far when the lens works well, but it for sure has some AF issues that their 75/2 doesn't have, at least on my Z copy.
It has a little bit of that dreamy/bloomed look wide open too, if you enjoy that sort of thing.
I saw a review of this lens on youtube after you mentioned it in the other thread, Jonas.
It's in the basket but that youtuber also mentioned AF issues. But they said they had a firmware update for the lens and it improved it significantly. I'm not familiar with the particular youtuber.
He was using it on the A7cR, he has a chapter for the autofocus ... with a demo of the autofocus... does the footage look right for you guys, seems very fast, I don't even see any transition it just snaps:

He does seem reasonably fair in the rest of the review.

Let's see, don't have a 40mm and I'm liking 45mm....Show more →
Mr Wong is good and reliable but in the video some cuts are really short/fast. Another cool and more calm guy has his presentation here:
Robert May in Bristol (I think) is a no thrill no amazing but in the long run very appreciated youtuber. My opinions.

Thank you, enjoyed that one, caught quite a few of them now.
I like the fact that ttartisan refer to it as a portrait lens in their youtube video for it, that's really what I'm focussed on (people anyway), so a bit closer distance is what I'm focussed on with this.
Trying not to set the expectation too high but seen some nice examples of something a bit special, and some plain ones at the same distance, let's see. Think the colours will need some work on the Sony. Didn't need as much with the Sigma, but the Samyung 45mmf1.8 does too.
Then we have Kieran Hayes (unknown to me, let me just say I wasn't impressed by the presentation and the review). Here:
This is strange. At 7:20 he comes to vignetting and there is none! On the other hand he got a poor result when doing the poorly performed "sharpness" test.
Are we in for a lottery?

I watched this video earlier and remember thinking to myself, he's talking about different apertures but is he updating the image on screen?

He is. I wondered the same thing but if pausing the video and scrolling by hand you can see the images getting switched. As i mentioned, the whole video and review can be improved in several ways.
Here is another one:
Phil Thatch (another, to me, unknown person - we are in Nikon land here), portraits, environments, no obvious bad vignetting.
I might give this a shot when B&H gets them in stock (currently a coming soon item). I've been thinking about finding a used 35 f/2.8 to slap on my OG A7 that I still have kicking around but at this price this could be a viable option.
If I end up with one I'd try it on my A1, but I doubt it would offer much beyond what I get from my Sony 35 f/1.8, which I know isn't universally loved, but I really like it.
I almost ordered one yesterday from TTArtisan directly but I am going to hold off for now. I am still somewhat interested but these reviews are all over the place.

You can VERY CLEARLY see the issue with the landscape pic of the sea at 5:23
I think I'm starting to come across as insane with this issue, so feel free to ignore me being so hung up on it. I just hate the current state of youtube camera/lens reviews and I try to do better myself for the benefit of others.

You are right. I VERY CLEARLY missed that moment. However, compared to the failed Helsinki photo walk it was nothing. Interesting. I'll keep an eye open for this when my copy arrives.
My main impression after several videos is still positive. That's dangerous of course as all there is left is disappointment. We'll see....

The "very clearly" wasn't an indictment of you, more the reviewer who didn't mention it
Here is a basic brick wall/vignette test for what the "normal" vignette looks like..what on earth is happening at f4? It's like the vignette is inverted where the center of the frame is dark instead. F8 looks to be the sweet spot as expected.
