TTA confirmed to me that they have gotten feedback from Sony testers about the vignette issue (I sent them Matti’s video) and the firmware update only exists for the Sony lens so far. I’d assume that FW will become public at some point.

how do you correct vignetting with firmware? is it a lens correction profile update?

I'm not sure the FW update has anything to do with the vignette issue, Wong said it was for improved AF, which I can see the Z version sorely needing as well.
Hoping the update comes ASAP. In AF-C mode, focusing on anything to the left or right third of the frame doesn't seem to work well; it pulses or hunts a lot. And when it kind of does focus, but I can hear the motor chugging like it's uncertain.

I sent TTA this type of chugging/pulsing issue in video form. The lens almost sounds like it grinds when doing this. I suspect this is what the Sony FW addresses, Z example below. Also of note, there will be times where the camera just gives up trying to acquire focus and the focus seems to reset to MFD (also caught in the video).
You can also see how the corners (watch top left) pulse dark while it's racking.
@Fred Miranda@ I'd be curious on your thoughts of what I captured in my GIF in post 19 of this thread, where the vignette seems to invert at f4 (center is darker, corner is brighter). You've tested way more lenses than I have.

Hi Scott,
What I'm seeing looks consistent and pretty much what I’d expect. At each stop, the corners get brighter, so I don't think vignetting is much of an issue with this lens. It's definitely a compromise between size and speed.
Between f/2.8 and f/4, the corners appear brighter at f/4, and the center seems a bit darker...but I believe that's just a small overall exposure difference between the two settings.

Is all that from your experience? What system?
I have the Sony version.

Yes, exactly. Captures what mine does as well. It's a fun lens to shoot with so far, just need TTA to settle down the AF.
That was quick! For Sony E mount users, the firmware update is out on the TTA website for the public. Changelog indicates it addresses AF issues. I'm eager to test it out, but since I'm using a Mac it'll have to wait until I can get my hands on a Windows machine.

Had my lens arrived I would have been eager to update and see how things work. Now that wouldn't have worked as the download is a FIR-file. Isn't that a Canon thing?
I expected a BIN-file but will find a way to open the downloaded FIR-file to see what's inside it.

Luckily my son is a Windows guy.
Thanks for the post. I will update the lens when it arrives.
I posted some full res samples on the Nikon side to give an idea of how the corners and bokeh render compared to the Z 40, but should be helpful for the Sony side too.

The main competitor in terms of size is the Sony 40mm f/2.5G, but the TTArtisan 40/2 is about 2/3 of a stop faster and practically the same size in length (actually 1mm shorter) and noticeably thinner. Which one is better really depends on how you feel about lens character as the Sony is better corrected for SA.
The TTArtisan has a strong outward field curvature, while the Sony's curvature is neutral. That means the Sony's rendering is more predictable...things that should be out of focus towards the corners stay nicely blurred. (Not the case with the TTArtisan because of FC)
The TTArtisan struggles with corner sharpness at wide apertures and only cleans up when you stop down to f/5.6 or f/8, whereas the Sony performs well even wide open. So, the TTArtisan definitely shows more imperfections, but it gives you stronger blur, especially around the center's OOF areas. Both lenses have noticeable chromatic aberration, especially axial.
So far, this is just from checking out online samples. I might grab one to try it in person. It looks like a nice lens for general shooting, definitely has some quirks, but ones you can actually use to your advantage....Show more →
This sample really highlights the outward field curvature I mentioned earlier: https://images.stockholm360.net/ttartisan-af-40mm-f-2/#mwl-3691
Notice how the subject is sharp in the center while the out-of-focus areas toward the corners appear more in the focus zone than they should.
On a Sony body with a Kolari mod (thin sensor), this effect should be corrected, making the out-of-focus rendering near the edges look more consistent with the center. Once I get my copy, I’ll be able to confirm this.

It reminds me about the look the images taken with the Zeiss ZM 35/1.4 have. The effect is not that bad here as with the Zeiss lens though.
When you get your copy, will you be able to check if it really is about a focal plane curvature or about an effect caused by vignetting?
