For context I bought a used RP a few years ago
Paid through the nose for it and stupidly scratched the EXPOSED sensor not long after buying it. My fault entirely
It came without adapter so bought a used OEM plain adapter
Got fed up of the adapters added length to my EF lenses so bought several RF lenses
16, 28, 35, 50, 85 and 24-105 plus added the control ring adapter too, oh and a 3rd party RF extension tube set.
The scratched sensor bugged me but throwing good money after bad getting the sensor replaced was simply a non starter.
Somehow I fell upon a cheap used R100
Again all was fine until all the R100’s limitations rose their ugly heads as they did with the RP
So I abandoned the whole RF idea and reverted back to DSLR’s and my canon M system plus a trip into Pentax territory 😉
We went to Prague 2 weeks ago and I agonised for weeks beforehand what camera to take.
It was never going to be the R stuff, that was for certain!!
So either canon 6D or Pentax K3
I couldn’t decide
On the morning of departure after weeks of constantly changing my mind - I abandoned both and grabbed the M50 + 22 + 11-22 + 18-150
It was perfect, small, light, very discreet and incredibly capable!!
Back home I realised aps-c was enough for my needs. I don’t need the weight nor bulk of FF no more (only ever shoot JPEG’s)
For some reason that I still can’t understand why, I pulled out the R100 and pondered the idea of pairing it with primes… 16, 28, 50 & 85
Giving me the FF equivalent of 25, 45, 80 & 135
I thought that sounded great
Only the R100 is just way too crippled coming from the somewhat amazing M50.
I half heartedly pondered the R50.. identical size…
Then last week spotted a brand new boxed (unwanted gift) R50 at a price that seemed too good to miss.
So bought it.
I’ve also bought two of the Neewer cages that fit both R100 & R50 - way better than any of the smallrig cages I bought for the M stuff
The cage allows for a much better grip and with its 3 point attachment is incredibly sturdy
The R50 is due to arrive either Monday or Tuesday.
I was excited…..
Today I discovered that canon have once again wielded their infamous Cripple Hammer…
The R50 doesn’t have auto sensor cleaning!!
WTF !!
It is beyond a joke…
To put this into context, I pulled out my canon M10 body (I own the entire M system inventory)
How is it that canon added sensor cleaning to the M10 but yet removed it from both R100 and R50??
I’ve now come to the only conclusion I can think of… it’s because canon are first class C**ts, that’s why.
The R50 hasn’t even arrived and I’ve already made my mind up it’s not worth the effort getting to know. The lack of auto sensor cleaning is shameful… especially given the sensor is exposed !!
Funny thing was
Whilst checking prices I spotted deals on the R6ii (£1499) and briefly did think that I might add that later.
But after realising again that my now 3 R models are all crippled in one way or another is a step too far…I’ve decided to abandon the R line for good.
The irony is that earlier my “”lowly”” canon M10 was paired with the ef 70-300 ISii nano and performed impeccably….and has sensor cleaning too!! Paid £60quid for it a few years back!!
I’ve come to the conclusion that canons budget <cough cough> R line is…..shite!!
To hell with them.
I won’t be wasting any more time nor money that’s for certain. You have to laugh that their R lenses are built so optically inferior, that they demand AI corrections to function!!
I think that’s says all it needs to.
Thank god I kept my DSLR’s and M stuff.
As for the R50, it will be checked it’s as described and then moth balled and stored away with the rest of the R shit I’ve accumulated.
Can’t even be arsed to sell on !! Plus it’s a painful reminder of just how dire the brand has become.
Just curious, would you be so angry and upset if you had not assumed auto cleaning sensor was present beforehand and therefore would have skipped the R50 purchase?
Wow, personally don't think the lack of an auto sensor cleaner is a deal breaker. If they didn't include them on nearly every camera now you wouldn't know you were missing one. It's pretty easy to clean a sensor and most of the time you will have a lens on the body. I will concede I kind of wondered where your post was going at times. You should have picked up a R5 II and a 24-105.
Pixelpuffin, I believe you need to stop chasing gear and just go make images. I purchased the R50 fully understanding its limitations. I figure the best camera is the one that’s with you, and for small-handed me, the R50 is easy to just carry on vacation, short hikes, etc. Good luck in your pursuit, but “perfection” is elusive.
Instead of making new threads each time you have a rant you should just bump your last rant to consolidate them in one long hall of fame rant thread. Considering you post these gems quarterly now, or maybe even monthly, you'll build one long collection of rants to look back on and remind yourself how often you were drinking yourself into oblivion. I also think it's important for you to share an updated photo of your camera collection in your loft every time you buy another one and discard it onto the pile. I'm pretty sure you own more cameras now than all of us combined.

He's the kind of guy who buys an RF 50/1.8, then leaves a bad review because it doesn't zoom and isn't as sharp as the 1.2, cursing both Canon and the RF mount. "Not such a bargain, is it?"

Then people would bitch even more about poor battery life. My GP-E2 does the job very nicely.
The GP-E2 is often impractical to have on top of a camera and precludes other shoe accessories. I often work with two bodies so it is even more of a hassle to mange two of them.

EBH
Depends on your priorities... it's much more practical than any other option available to me, short of picking up my Z9.
