If you decide to get the RX1r.3 I would be very interested to hear your experience, and the experience of others here on this forum, who I know won't hold back good or bad.
My everyday pocket cameras for the last decade-plus are Ricoh GR's, which I can say from experience have 'leisurely' AF, even the GR3x. I love 'em anyway.
If the RX1r.3 can match something like an A7.3 and Sony's budget 50/1.8, which is known to have agrarian AF motors, I would consider that just good enough. I'm not shooting Le Mans here.

As expected, AF speed appears to be a point of concern, though it's worth noting that no reviewer has called it anywhere near as sluggish as the Leica Q3. The real question is how much the RX1R III’s Eye-AF lags behind that of the A7R V or A7CR, likely only noticeable in more demanding situations.
Fuji X100VI or Ricoh GR III seem like a good contender for the purpose, both have quicker AF than the Q3 while being more pocketable as well.... I can't imagine the RX1RIII AF is just as good as these two compacts.
I’ll admit I’m coming at this with less background, having no prior experience with the Sonnar 35/2. Reviewers who are more familiar with fixed-lens compacts or the Q3 seem to genuinely enjoy the Sony without nitpicking too much. In contrast, some of the bigger YTs or mirrorless-focused creators seem caught between trying to appear transparent, staying aligned with popular sentiment, while also preserving their relationship with Sony. From the sample images on DPReview, the lens looks solid to me, and Eye-AF performance seems quite respectable.
Still, nothing beats real-world use. I’ll need some proper hands-on time to judge whether the AF holds up, especially since my kids have an uncanny ability to expose the limits of any AF system 😄. For about the same price, I can get the A9III to satisfy both strobe use and AF speed. It is just a different camera, just like settling with the A7CR or A7RV....Show more →

you can hear how every reviewer is choosing words VERY carefully to preserve their Sony relationship.
Sort of interesting that Mark Galer who is a Sony Ambassador has only done a preview of the camera as maybe He would have trouble trying to really talk it up as the latest and greatest from Sony!!

I think, with few exceptions, they simply don’t understand what the camera is for, and are judging it in general use against general purpose cameras. (Two who did get it were Richard Butler from dpreview and Tony Northrup.) You have to remember they spend their working hours comparing features and value, so that’s how they rate cameras. YouTube influencers aren’t usually making a big income, so most of them can’t put themselves in the shoes of a wealthy person who can easily afford a camera like this as an additional one or even a temporary toy.

Mark Galer didn’t seem to have any issue putting lipstick on subpar Sony products, while saying his relationship as an ambassador doesn’t affect anything because he isn’t directly paid. At least. From what I’ve seen when he was challenged in some comments. In which case it really would be something if he refused to review.

I received a shipping confirmation on mine and should have it on Friday. I have four travel jobs coming up in the next 60 days that this will be in good use next to my A1. I'll report back.

Same here. Expected Friday.

Are you serious? When I read this article, I slapped my forehead:
"With the zoom mounted, I couldn't quite work out what I was shooting, and kept framing too wide and getting photos with a lot of background and venue."
What nonsense! If he shoots at 35mm with the zoom, he doesn't get any more in the frame than he does with 35mm on the RX1.
"I also feel the fixed focal length really helped me get my head into the task. The only question I had to ask myself was: 'how many people am I getting in shot, so how close do I need to be?' This simplicity quickly had me seeing the room through a 35mm lens, and working out where I needed to put myself. It's a similar experience to the one I had when reviewing the Leica Q3 43."
Well, that's not a privilege of the RX1 or Q3 43, because that applies to ANY prime lens he could have put on his Nikon.
"I didn't once notice the low resolution of the viewfinder: possibly because I've spent the last few years of my life reviewing cameras with low res finders. I tend to find changes in viewfinder resolution much more distracting than consistent low resolution, as in the moment"
I'm sorry, but this logic is almost embarrassing.
"In practice, it's probably the most purely photography-focused camera Sony is ever going to make. And, while its menus and interface aren't as dedicated to that cause as Leica's are on the Q3 series, the experience is still one that puts photography to the fore."
Without words.
Honestly? This is the most ridiculous review I've ever read.

I think the problems with the review community’s take on pricing fall into two camps:
It’s too expensive for what it delivers compared to more expensive counterparts, and less expensive, but larger and more flexible offerings.
Or
It’s correctly priced when you account for RX1Rii launch price, plus inflation and tariff adjustment for the US marketplace currently.
In both circumstances, we’re omitting the reality for consumers (not professionals with a business case for their purchases, or luxury buyers who don’t consider the cost of alternatives). Many people have less disposable income in real, adjusted terms today than ten years ago. So even if the product is justified for its pricing, it may miss a population of buyers who simply can’t afford it - and who otherwise might have absent wage stagnation, unusual inflation on non-discretionary costs like health care, child care, etc., and tariffs. I hope this doesn’t tank the product line.

Image quality looks pretty stellar - the lens as I remember. I wish I had all them money, then I'd buy both the RX1III and the Q3 43. But alas, I do not. So will buy neither, but do look forward to some real world experiences from the forum B&B.
I notice many of the reviews mention the 1/2000 limit with the leaf shutter. For the OG version I had, i bought a 62mm 2 stop ND and a nice 49-62mm step up - the outer diameter of the lens is almost exactly 62mm and so the filter matched the lens quite seamlessly. I owned but didn't use the pricey hood, so the ND stayed on most of the time.

I generally like this guy, and this seems like a good balanced review:
He mentions that he would have liked a non-r "RX1 III" and I totally agree. I have no need for 61mp and would have preferred a cheaper camera with a 33mp (or whatever) sensor instead.

The most level-headed review I've seen so far. Doesn't dance around the shortcomings, but seems to really understand what this camera is all about.

Great review - his point about it making sense as a companion to, say, an A7RV is well made. I could see carrying both in my bag, as I do that with my X100V.

In case you are still on the fence about the AF capability, here is the user experience thread on dpreview:

One would hope they could at least give the option for the camera to automatically switch to electronic shutter at speeds over 1/2000 as the my q2 monchrom can
p.42 #20 · Official: Sony RX1R III Digital Camera announced!
At the 10:13 mark in the video he (Kyle Meshna) talks about the lack of auto switching between mechanical and electronic shutter when going above 1/2000. He notes that the A1.2 can do it. Maybe it's just an oversight by Sony and that feature can be added via firmware? Not holding my breath.
Also a good review.
