I'm curious how 40 2.5 performs compared to Sonnar. If they're quite similar I'd opt for A7CR. My deciding factor would the lens in this case.
sadly it is not close. the FE lens that is most similar to rx1 lens is the 24/1.4 imo. none of 35-40s are close, but of them the ZA 35/1.4 is the closest.

i'm really interested if someone can make side by side comparison with 40 2.5. I'd like see a visual proof if this Sonnar is not overhyped.

I thought the EVF was clear and fine. AF similar to newer sony bodies.
Having seen the camera and reporting is great, but stores like Map Camera, B&H and Adorama offer a great opportunity to sample what a great EVF has to offer.
Others can add to this list, but take a look at the Sony A7Rv, A1ii, Fujifilm GFX 100 ii, Hasselblad XCD and various Leica viewfinders. These are examples of really good viewfinders.. perhaps the Fuji is a great EVF. Unfortunately, consumers want the next level resolution, miniaturization and so on, but are unaware of the pleasure of using a top quality EVF. As a result, we might be destined to find EVF stagnation as we progress through generations of cameras.

Slightly off-topic question. What is the best solution to process RAW files from the Mark 3 until Adobe adds support in ACR? Can we use the Adobe profile for the Mark 2 as a substitute in the meantime?

My RX1R ii has a new sensor and LCD screen. Precision did something to renew the camera. The body , evf, etc is like a brand new one now. Same serial number so it was not switched out. I'm halfway tempted to sell mine and put that $$ toward a version III.
I do love usung my version ii. I'm not certain how the new one will effect used prices for the ii

I don't know which Leica models you're referring to exactly, but a friend of mine has the Q3, and what can I say? I was pretty disappointed when I took a look through it. The EVF on my Sony A7iv is anything but a revelation, but I definitely found the Q3's worse, even though its much higher resolution had led me to expect the opposite. I have no idea if it's a matter of settings, but I was really disappointed. Recently, someone in the German Leica forum complained about the SL3's EVF, because the resolution drops so low when the focus magnifier is activated that manual focusing is a nightmare. He therefore returned the set he had already bought and stuck with the A1. Apparently, the SL2 doesn't suffer from this problem, but the Q3 43 does. So, technical specifications on paper and in practice can sometimes be quite different.

You could use EXIF Tool to change camera model field.
Change to one of the 61mp Sonys: A7RV, A7RIV, A7RIVa, A7CR
I still do that now with archived Sony A7RIVa or recent A7RV files to use DxO Pure RAW as it does not support either but does support A7RIV.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that.

I only own/ have owned the A7Rv & X2D. My only Leica digital is an M11 Monochrom, so your suggestion that Leica’s EVF might be another example of a company providing less than stellar EVFs. Again, consumers are not demanding high performance EVFs. In fact, recently, more quality cameras are without EVFs.

You could just search that thread for posts by Oogappeltje. Add philip_pj.
That gives you a quick way to see a wide range images.
Sure I can find tons of photos made with RX1RII, but I'm interested in comparison. In DPR Studio test scene even X100VI has more detail than RX1RII, and RX1R. Let alone Leica Q3, Q43, and GFX100RF. I downloaded full size images and I'm not convinced about this lens up to date standards performance. It was good lens 10 years ago sure.

IMHO You don't get the rx1's 35mm sonnar for resolution.
For entertainment purposes only, back when I had the rx1rii I took a fair number of images with both the rx1 and whatever else I had with me. Not a rigorous test, since the field of view was always a bit different (I used to pack the rx1 as my "35mm lens" and then carry something else a bit wider or longer for flexibility). Just lots of images in different situations.
Anyway, the long and short of it is that virtually everything else I had out-resolved the rx1. The DP Merrills, scanned medium format film, and the A7riii with any of the CV lenses all easily resolved more. Heck, I think my 24-105 zoom was extremely close.
The reason for getting the sonnar is the "rounded" quality it gives for mid-range subjects, especially environmental portraits.
I came to conclude that THE use case for the rx1 is travel environmental portraiture in decent light.
I think it would be very hard to do better than an rx1 for that purpose. (If that was my primary use I wouldn't hesitate; since I generally take a wider variety of images while traveling, other lens/camera combos win out for me.)

Yes, not the camera for you probably. Potential buyers think it is still good and care more about sharpness only.
Testing for 'more detail' will show an improvement though with increase in pixels.

The comments about questioning the lens mirrors a recent thought I had...if you want $5k for this camera, a few things I think would go a long way to better justifying that price. Many have already been mentioned in this thread regarding IBIS, EVF, etc. But I think another selling point would have been a "v2" of the lens, which would have justified a price increase as we're not just talking about a camera body here. In 10 years are you telling me the lens is so good it couldn't be made better?
As far as form-factor compared to the A7c line, I had an RX1RII. Loved the small size and the images it made. Issue was I wanted some flexibility in focal length, and for me, how I carry the A7cR isn't different than how I carried the RX1RII. Even though when set next to each other sure the RX1RII was smaller and looked nicer. For those that have a use-case where only something the size of the RX1 line fits how you need it to, then this camera gets more compelling.

"In 10 years are you telling me the lens is so good it couldn't be made better?"
Sony GM 85 released 2016, GMII released 2024.
Some decided to keep their 8 year older 85 after trying the newer lens.
So yes, for some, the new lens was not better.
And that's the thing, 'better' when used to describe lenses does not mean much at all, except, for those that only care about MTF charts.
So for those people, they should say that is either all they care about, or it's their priority.
Further, they should ask if the lens could be sharper, rather than if it could be better.
Sigma could release a V2 of their 45 2.8 i series lens that was sharper. They'd probably ruin what people like about it though.

Didnt notice any noise or lag with the AF system or lens during quick racks on the M3 (was pretty instant)
Does this imply Sony have changed the focusing motors on the lens? If there's no noise/lag, it suggests linear motors but the RX1R II certainly didn't use linear ones?

I was under the impression every one adored this lens…as can be seen in the rx1 image thread. Why would you want to screw around with something that is so well respected?
