I just recently picked up a D3s, because I missed my D3 that I had sold off years ago. Still a great camera.

I'm in the process of selling off all of my remaining DSLR gear (D500 and lenses) and I've already got a robust Z mount set up for professional and travel needs.

Unfortunately F mount gear prices have cratered.

I still enjoy shooting a D850 mostly due to two lenses, the 58G and the 85D f1.4 and don't mind buying, once in a while some F bayonet lenses.

By the way the D850 is one hell of a camera, I also shoot a Z8 and the D850 holds super well!!!

I have a couple of Canon 5dsr’s as backups. 1 comes on an architectural shoot alongside my GFXv1, I pull it out on a shoot for either details at the 100-200mm range and for a GIF image of people walking within a space that gets posted on socials. I would like to now just keep 1 and swap it for a R5 sell the R7 too), or have been waiting so long now for a stills only high resolution canon camera. I will always keep a DSLR as most of my glass is still EF and I do not see any need to upgrade unless I move to faster work without a tripod. I have taken my DSLRs through some tough conditions, sandy, dirty, wet and also dropped from 1-2m and still indestructible.

Funny story regarding dslr's; yesterday I finally got one of my kids to go out shooting with me. I gave my kid an old Canon T3i with a 55-250mm STM, and we went shooting local wildlife at a park. I brought along my Sony A7iv with a Tamron 28-200mm. We spotted some birds spearing some fish and a gator. My kid's pictures came out fantastic, almost National Geographic-worthy, while my pics were blurry and underwhelming. I later realized I was shooting in Aperture Priority. 😀

Thanks to this experience (and the T3i), my kid wants to continue with photography!

Clearly the brain behind the lens was more important than whether the images were taken with a DSLR or mirrorless.

My take:

I use a mirrorless system (Fujifilm XT5 plus lenses) and an older Canon DSLR system (5DsR and L lenses). Both do the work I ask of them.

I mostly use the mirrorless system for street and travel photography, though I have done other things (like landscape and wildlife) with it. I mostly use the DSLR system for my tripod-based landscape photography, and since I virtually always use live view and manual controls, it does just fine.

Eventually I'm going to replace the latter system. When I do it will be with a mirrorless system, since current mirrorless cameras and their lenses have advantages over 10-year-old cameras like my 5DsR. I'm obviously not in any white heat to dump it though, and few people need to upgrade just to move from DSLR to mirrorless.

As I mentioned recently in the 105e thread, I’m keeping a DSLR for my favourite f mount lenses including the 105. I just prefer to use those lenses in their native mount. My z mount kit is fairly complete for my needs.
I used the D5 and Tamron sp 35 1.4 for some kids photos at Christmas. The results were great but for personal use the D5 is becoming a bit weighty. With the D850 still available new at a good price, I’m fairly well convinced to get what I can for my trusty old D5 and get a new D850 just for use with my favourite f mount keeper lenses. I owned a D850 for several years before mirrorless.
They adapt fine on a Z8 and Z9 but I’m much more likely to reach for them on the D850 and I have no intention to replace them if a z equivalent comes along. I’m referring mainly to the Tamron 35, Nikon 58g and 105e.

D500, 16-80 f/2.8-4 @ 35mm f/3.5, 1/1000

If you are into sports and or wildlife, the D500 is excellent. What sets it apart from other dSLRs is the fact that the focusing sensors cover most of the view finder and not just the center like it does on the d5 or d850. It will continuous shoot at 10 fps with a 200 shot buffer. I like to use BBF, GRP, SHUTTER PRIORITY, with AUTO ISO for sports and wildlife. I just hold the back button, point and shoot. You can get close to this with a d850 with a battery pack and big battery in APS-C mode but, the buffer is smaller and it is much heavier. But, the d850 is a whole nother beast that can do everything well unless you are into video. In that case I just use my cell phone.

I still use a Canon 5D V1 and IV. The OG is just for nostalgia, it’s a collectors item for me. But the 5D IV is fab and makes lovely out of camera files I don’t get from other systems. But that camera gets used out of the house rarely, it’s been replaced by my GFX system.

For photography gigs and night events I use a Nikon Z6. For creative and fun shooting, I have a Fuji S1 Pro and an IR converted D1X. I got them so cheap, that I couldn't pass them up. I'm actually looking for a Fuji S5 Pro because I love the color rendering of Super CCD.

. DSLR?? Up to a not even a year ago I was happily using a D7200 and a D810. Now I have an 850 and I feel like I have the best camera on the planet :-). I still use those old ones though, They are fine cameras.

I would love to own a 7500. it's got the "flip up" screen (like the 850) rather than the out to the side screen. That is a big deal to me.

The D500 is a nice companion to the D850. The controls, focus, and setups are almost identical. I use my D500 for sports and wildlife and the D850 for everything else.

D500 is the GOAT. But I have the D850 battery grip and the big battery (from my D4) and the fast card so that bumps the FPS up to 9, and If I ran it in crop mode that's sorta like having a D500 built in.
I like the idea of the D7500 as a smaller lighter option than the 850 with grip. The D7200, even with a grip feels like a toy since I have been lugging the beast around.

D7500 is on sale for $699 new right now. Right now, though I need another camera like I need a hole in the head. :-)

I've shot my D850 with the grip and big battery in crop mode. And, compared to the d500, the IQ is a little better because the D850 has a BSI sensor and the D500 does not. Where the d500 is the nicest is with the focus sensor pattern covers almost the entire view finder and, 10 fps without the grip is pretty cool.

I sold my Df last week and realized after that it was my last functioning DSLR. I just wasn’t using it. Couple of lenses that won’t AF with the FTZ need to go and I am done. Still have a bunch of older mf lenses I will keep, those are fun. Wasn’t really a goal to ditch F mount, it’s just kind of happening

Been shooting products for like the last 7 years with a 12MP D700 lol. It's enough pixels and was just $200. It's a really tough camera so perfect for the job.

I used to bring it to wedding and clothing shoots too but now using sony ff for people pics.

Kind of grimy 😩

I use a Nikon D750 with D700 as backup, they both have a battery grip and an improved viewfinder screen for better manual focus, and I own 20+ lenses for them, of which I consider five my core working set.

If I would be somehow forced to switch to mirrorless, I would have to restart looking for great lenses again. Which arent even guaranteed to exist. Nevermind everything would be far more expensive, too. And all that just to get to the very same place in regards to image quality that I'm already at, maybe slightly better.

My thoughts exactly. I'm able to do everything I want to do with my d850/d500/d750 and I can get great F mount glass for pennies on the dollar.
